Yandere Stream

The hallway smelled faintly of fresh paint.

Kai stopped halfway down the stairs.

Something felt... wrong.

Not dangerous.

Just...

Quiet.

Too quiet.

For months—perhaps years, depending on how one counted—the world had always whispered to him. Doors. Memories. Fragments. The unseen pressure of fate had lingered behind every breath, every step, every ordinary moment.

Now...

Nothing.

He stood perfectly still, listening with every fiber of his being.

Only the distant hum of traffic drifted through the apartment building. Someone laughed outside. A television played in another apartment. Water pipes rattled inside the walls while an old elevator groaned somewhere below.

Ordinary sounds.

Beautifully ordinary.

No hidden voices.

No impossible echoes.

No feeling that reality was watching him.

”...Kai?”

Daniel looked back from the bottom of the staircase.

”You coming?”

Kai blinked as though waking from a dream.

”Yeah.”

He continued downstairs.

Every step felt strange. Almost weightless.

Like he’d forgotten how to walk through a world that wasn’t trying to kill him.

The tension he’d carried for so long had become part of his body. Without it, he almost didn’t know where to put his hands.

For the first time in what felt like forever...

He wasn’t waiting for the next disaster.

The landlord turned out to be exactly what Kai expected.

A balding man in his sixties wearing a stained polo shirt and carrying three different keyrings that jingled every time he moved.

He barely looked up from his clipboard.

”You the new tenant?”

Noah nodded.

”That’s me.”

The landlord handed over a stack of paperwork thick enough to qualify as a novel.

”Apartment 7B.”

”Don’t smoke.”

”Don’t fight.”

”If the pipes explode, call maintenance.”

He flipped another page before adding in the same bored tone,

”If ghosts show up...”

He shrugged.

”...good luck.”

Daniel burst into laughter.

The landlord looked genuinely confused.

”What?”

Daniel wiped a tear from the corner of his eye.

”Nothing.”

Kai couldn’t help smiling.

For the first time in forever...

Ghosts were just a joke.

The landlord shoved a key into Noah’s hand.

”Welcome to the building.”

Then he wandered away without another word, muttering something about late rent and broken elevators.

Daniel watched him disappear.

”...I kinda respect that guy.”

”He gave us exactly zero enthusiasm.”

”That’s commitment.”

Outside, the summer air wrapped around Kai like a warm blanket.

He stopped on the apartment steps.

Cars rolled past.

Children raced one another on bicycles.

Someone argued cheerfully over a phone call.

A food truck was parked across the street, filling the air with the smell of grilled onions and spices.

Everything looked brighter than he remembered.

Or maybe...

He had simply forgotten what normal looked like.

”Kai!”

He barely had time to turn before Luna crossed the street without waiting for traffic.

”Kai!”

She practically crashed into him.

Before he could react...

She wrapped both arms around him.

Tightly.

Kai froze.

”...Uh...”

She buried her face against his shoulder.

”You idiot.”

Her voice was muffled.

”You absolute idiot.”

Kai slowly raised his hands.

Awkwardly.

Then hugged her back.

”...Hi.”

She didn’t let go.

Not immediately.

When she finally stepped away, her eyes were slightly red.

”I thought...”

She stopped herself.

Closed her eyes.

Shook her head.

”No.”

”I’m done saying that.”

Kai tilted his head.

”Saying what?”

”’I thought I lost you.’”

She forced out a weak smile.

”I’m tired of those words.”

Kai studied her for a long moment.

Then nodded.

”...Me too.”

Neither of them spoke after that.

They didn’t need to.

The silence between them felt warmer than any conversation.

Daniel cleared his throat loudly.

”So...”

He looked between the two of them.

”I’m going to pretend I didn’t witness any of that.”

Luna immediately glared at him.

”You witnessed nothing.”

”I witnessed absolutely nothing.”

Daniel nodded solemnly.

”There definitely wasn’t hugging.”

”There wasn’t.”

”Nope.”

”I certainly didn’t almost cry.”

”You definitely didn’t.”

Kai laughed.

The sound surprised him.

Not forced.

Not polite.

A real laugh.

Daniel blinked.

”...There it is.”

Kai looked at him.

”What?”

”I almost forgot what your actual laugh sounded like.”

Kai scratched the back of his neck.

”I have one?”

”Barely.”

Luna snorted.

”It’s been extinct for months.”

Noah watched the three of them from a short distance away.

His expression remained unreadable.

Kai noticed.

”You okay?”

Noah blinked.

”Hm?”

”You’ve been staring.”

”Oh.”

A small smile crossed his face.

”I forgot what this looked like.”

Kai frowned.

”What?”

”People.”

The answer came naturally.

”They’re louder than I remembered.”

Luna raised an eyebrow.

”...You just move here?”

”Pretty much.”

She shrugged.

”Fair enough.”

Daniel grinned.

”Give it a week.”

”You’ll wish everyone shut up.”

Noah chuckled quietly.

”I believe you.”

The four of them wandered toward the nearby café.

Conversation came surprisingly easily.

Daniel complained about work.

Luna complained about Kai’s sleeping schedule.

Kai defended himself with increasingly weak excuses.

”I sleep.”

”No, you collapse.”

”That’s basically sleeping.”

”It absolutely isn’t.”

”I close my eyes.”

”While editing videos.”

”Details.”

Daniel laughed.

”She’s got you there.”

Noah mostly listened.

Occasionally asking small questions.

”What coffee do you usually order?”

”How long have you known each other?”

”Who’s better at Mario Kart?”

”Who loses the most?”

Luna answered immediately.

”Kai.”

”I do not.”

”You absolutely do.”

”I’ve won before.”

Daniel nodded.

”Statistically.”

”One time.”

Kai sighed dramatically.

”I regret becoming friends with both of you.”

”No you don’t.”

”...No.”

He smiled.

”I really don’t.”

Ordinary questions.

Normal conversations.

Somewhere along the walk...

Kai stopped scanning every rooftop.

Stopped checking every reflection.

Stopped waiting for reality to crack open.

It never did.

The café bell chimed softly as they entered.

The rich aroma of roasted coffee beans filled the room.

A young barista smiled from behind the counter.

”Morning!”

”What can I get started for you?”

Daniel ordered first.

Luna second.

Noah stepped aside.

Kai looked up at the menu.

Then froze.

Not because of the prices.

Not because of the drinks.

Because...

The chalkboard menu was changing.

Only for him.

The drink names disappeared one by one.

Espresso.

Latte.

Mocha.

Americano.

All of them dissolved like chalk caught in the rain.

New words slowly formed.

Welcome back, Kai.

His smile vanished.

Nobody else reacted.

The barista continued waiting patiently.

Luna nudged him.

”...Earth to Kai?”

He blinked.

The menu was normal again.

Espresso.

Latte.

Mocha.

Nothing unusual.

”...Sorry.”

”I’ll just take a black coffee.”

The barista smiled.

”You got it.”

Kai stepped away from the counter.

His heartbeat had quickened.

The story was over.

Wasn’t it?

So why...

While they waited for their drinks, Kai’s eyes drifted toward the café window.

Across the street...

A little girl stood holding her mother’s hand.

She couldn’t have been older than seven.

She looked directly at him.

Smiled.

Then...

Very deliberately...

She lifted an invisible pen.

With exaggerated care, she pretended to write across the air.

One line.

Then another.

She giggled to herself before running after her mother.

Kai stared after her.

His coffee was placed on the counter.

He didn’t notice.

Noah quietly picked it up and handed it to him.

”You missed it.”

Kai accepted the cup without taking his eyes off the street.

”...Did you see that little girl?”

Noah looked outside.

”What little girl?”

Kai slowly turned toward him.

The sidewalk was empty now.

Families continued walking.

Cars rolled by.

Life moved on exactly as it should.

There was no fear anymore.

Only curiosity.

Because deep down...

He already knew.

The story had ended.

But endings were funny things.

Sometimes...

They were simply another beginning wearing a different name.

Kai looked down at the warm coffee in his hands before lifting his eyes toward the endless blue sky.

For the first time, he didn’t ask whether someone was watching.

He simply smiled.

Somewhere...

Someone...

Had just written the first sentence of a new story.
