Yandere Stream

Kai had never seen so many faces.

Only minutes ago, Platform Zero had been nearly empty. Now people appeared across the station in slow, silent waves, as though they had always been there and reality had only just decided to notice them. An old fisherman with weathered hands clutched a faded cap against his chest. A young nurse still wore her hospital identification badge. A little girl hugged a stuffed bear missing one arm. A soldier stood perfectly straight despite the bloodstained bandage wrapped around his shoulder. An elderly woman adjusted the wedding ring on her finger before smiling toward someone only she could see.

None of them looked frightened.

None of them looked confused.

Every face carried the same expression.

Hope.

Quiet.

Fragile.

Dangerous.

A knot formed in Kai’s stomach. Every one of them believed they were only moments away from seeing someone they had lost.

The station seemed to respond to their presence. Above Platform Zero, the ancient departure board suddenly rattled to life. Metal panels flipped so rapidly that the sound echoed through the station like heavy rainfall. Kai looked up, expecting destinations.

Instead, he saw names.

Thousands of names.

They flashed past too quickly to read.

Children.

Parents.

Brothers.

Sisters.

Friends.

Lovers.

One after another.

Each existed for only a fraction of a second before vanishing beneath another.

Click.

Click.

Click.

The endless sound filled the station.

Daniel stared upward. ”How many people...”

His voice faded.

The conductor answered quietly.

”Too many.”

Kai’s attention shifted toward a middle-aged man kneeling beside the newly emerged tracks. The man wore an immaculate business suit despite the dust coating the station. In his hands, he held a tiny pair of pink baby shoes.

His fingers trembled.

”I found them.”

His voice cracked into a laugh.

”I told you I’d never throw them away.”

Kai looked around.

The man was alone.

Yet somehow he wasn’t.

He nodded occasionally as though listening to someone answer him.

His eyes filled with tears.

”I know.”

He laughed softly.

”I know.”

A tear rolled down his cheek.

”I’m late.”

His shoulders shook.

”I’m sorry.”

Another laugh escaped him.

”I’ve been sorry every day.”

Kai’s chest tightened painfully.

Every instinct told him to walk over.

To stop him.

To pull him away.

But he couldn’t move.

The stranger from the pale train stepped beside him.

”You understand now.”

Kai kept staring at the crowd.

”No.”

His voice was low.

”I understand less.”

The stranger smiled sadly.

”That’s usually the first step.”

Kai turned sharply toward him.

”Then explain it.”

”Gladly.”

The stranger looked across the growing crowd.

”Every story leaves behind unfinished emotions.”

His gaze lingered on the waiting passengers.

”Words never spoken.”

”Forgiveness never given.”

”Goodbyes interrupted.”

The crowd continued to grow.

”Most people carry those burdens until the day they die.”

Kai slowly nodded.

”So this line offers closure.”

The stranger’s smile vanished.

”No.”

The answer came immediately.

”It offers temptation.”

Silence settled between them.

”Closure requires acceptance.”

The stranger pointed toward the waiting passengers.

”This asks nothing.”

Kai looked around the station.

He understood.

Real healing hurt.

Real healing demanded acceptance.

The Choice Line promised something easier.

One more conversation.

One more apology.

One more embrace.

One more chance.

How many people could honestly refuse?

Kai wasn’t certain he could.

Beside him, the little girl suddenly pressed both hands against her ears.

”No...”

Her voice trembled.

”Please...”

Kai immediately knelt beside her.

”What’s wrong?”

”They’re waking up.”

”Who’s waking up?”

She stared toward the darkness beyond the Choice Line.

”The ones...”

Fear entered her voice.

”...who never accepted goodbye.”

A deep vibration rolled beneath the station.

It wasn’t the sound of a train.

It was something else.

Something alive.

The rails of the Choice Line pulsed once.

Then again.

Like a heartbeat.

The conductor spun toward the tracks.

For the first time, Kai saw genuine anger on his face.

”Everyone!”

His voice thundered through the station.

”Step away from the Choice Line!”

Almost no one reacted.

Whether they couldn’t hear him or simply refused to listen, Kai couldn’t tell.

Passengers continued smiling.

Continued crying.

Continued speaking with people who weren’t there.

Noah suddenly grabbed Kai’s shoulder.

His face had gone completely pale.

”I remember.”

Kai looked at him.

”What?”

”My sister.”

Kai blinked.

”You told us you didn’t have one.”

”I didn’t.”

Noah’s breathing became ragged.

”I...”

He looked horrified.

”I don’t know anymore.”

Tears filled his eyes.

”I can see her.”

He pointed toward the rails.

”There.”

Kai followed his finger.

There was nothing.

No little girl.

No waiting sister.

Only empty space.

Noah took a step forward.

”She...”

His voice broke.

”She’s smiling.”

Luna immediately caught his arm.

”Noah.”

”She needs me.”

”No.”

”She does!”

His calm demeanor shattered completely.

”I left her!”

Luna tightened her grip.

”You never told us about her!”

”I...”

Noah froze.

His entire body shook.

”I...”

His voice became small.

Lost.

”I don’t know if she ever existed.”

The words hit Kai harder than anything else that night.

The Choice Line wasn’t showing memories.

It was weaving together regret, longing, and imagination until nobody could tell where one ended and another began.

The stranger watched Noah with obvious sadness.

”It has begun feeding.”

Kai turned sharply.

”Feeding on what?”

”Identity.”

The answer came without hesitation.

”The longer someone remains under its influence...”

His eyes drifted toward the crowd.

”...the less certain they become about who they are.”

Kai looked at Noah.

Then at the passengers.

Then back at the stranger.

”If they cross?”

”They won’t remember what they came to say.”

The stranger’s expression darkened.

”They’ll only remember that they wanted someone.”

A chill spread through Kai’s body.

Not because of the station.

Because he suddenly understood how cruel the Choice Line truly was.

It didn’t preserve love.

It consumed it.

It stripped away names.

Faces.

Memories.

Until all that remained was yearning.

Endless.

Bottomless.

Never satisfied.

Another heartbeat echoed beneath the station.

THUMP.

The entire crowd took one synchronized step closer to the rails.

Not willingly.

Not consciously.

As one.

Like flowers turning toward sunlight.

The conductor’s train released a long mournful whistle.

The sound rolled across the station like grief given voice.

The old man removed his cap.

His shoulders seemed heavier than before.

”I failed.”

Kai turned toward him.

”What?”

”I was supposed to keep this line buried.”

”You couldn’t have known.”

”I should have.”

His eyes never left the crowd.

”For a railway exists to help people continue their journey.”

The whistle faded into silence.

The conductor looked at the people gathering around the Choice Line.

”Not to convince them...”

His voice grew quieter.

”...that yesterday is still waiting.”

Kai followed his gaze.

The crowd continued inching forward.

The rails continued pulsing.

The darkness beyond the Choice Line seemed deeper than before.

Hungrier.

Then his attention shifted to Adrian.

The young man had not moved once.

Not toward the crowd.

Not toward the tracks.

Not toward either train.

He simply stood there staring at the Choice Line with quiet confusion.

Unlike everyone else, he wasn’t seeing anyone.

No family.

No friends.

No lost love.

Nothing.

Finally, he spoke so softly that only Kai heard him.

”Why...”

Kai turned toward him.

”Why what?”

Adrian’s eyes remained fixed on the rails.

His expression wasn’t sad.

It was bewildered.

”Why doesn’t it have anyone waiting for me?”

The question struck Kai harder than any supernatural revelation.

Around them, dozens of people were being consumed by their inability to let go.

But Adrian...

Adrian had no one to let go of.

No beginning.

No memories.

No unfinished goodbye.

Only emptiness.

And for the first time, Kai realized that loneliness might be even crueler than grief.

Because grief was proof that something had existed.

Adrian didn’t even have that.

Then the Choice Line pulsed again.

THUMP.

This time...

Something answered from the darkness beyond the tracks.

A single silhouette appeared.

Far away.

Motionless.

Watching.

And for the first time since the line awakened...

Adrian’s eyes widened.

Because someone was finally standing there.

Waiting for him.
