Yandere Stream

The first headlamp had been warm. Its light spilled across the platform like the glow of an old fireplace, softening every edge it touched. Even after everything Kai had experienced, standing on Platform Zero had felt strangely peaceful.

The second light was different.

Not brighter.

Colder.

Its beam cut through the darkness in a perfectly straight line, swallowing the drifting steam instead of illuminating it. Wherever the light passed, the warm amber glow cast by the waiting train seemed to weaken. The station itself appeared to recoil from its presence, as though every brick, rail, and lantern instinctively recognized something that did not belong.

Kai’s attention shifted to the conductor.

Most people would have missed the change.

He hadn’t.

Until now, the old man had carried himself with effortless composure, the calm confidence of someone who had spent centuries watching impossible things come and go. Nothing had surprised him. Nothing had unsettled him.

Now, however, there was a subtle tension in his posture.

His shoulders had stiffened slightly.

His left hand rested against the silver pocket watch tucked into his vest while his right disappeared behind his back. He wasn’t preparing for a fight.

He was preparing for an arrival.

Another whistle echoed through the station.

The sound wasn’t mournful like the first train’s call.

Nor was it angry.

It sounded empty.

As though nobody stood inside the engine to blow it.

The whistle simply existed.

Cold.

Hollow.

Wrong.

Daniel rubbed both arms and grimaced. ”I don’t like that one.”

No one argued.

Even Luna looked visibly uneasy, her usual calm expression cracking beneath the weight of whatever was approaching.

”What is it?” Kai asked quietly.

The conductor answered without taking his eyes off the darkness.

”I don’t know.”

Kai stared at him.

”You don’t know?”

”I know every railway under my care. Every station. Every schedule. Every passenger.”

Another whistle drifted from the tunnel.

”But I have never seen that train.”

The words settled over the platform like fresh snowfall.

Kai had assumed the conductor understood everything about this place. He had seemed like a fixture of the railway itself, a man who belonged to the tracks as much as the locomotives did.

Apparently, he didn’t know everything.

Which meant something had changed.

Something ancient.

Something even older than the railway had failed to anticipate.

Nearby, Noah slowly stepped closer to the edge of the platform. His expression had become distant again. Not frightened. Listening.

Kai noticed immediately.

”What do you hear?”

For several moments Noah didn’t answer. His eyes remained fixed on the darkness swallowing the tracks.

Then he spoke.

”Voices.”

Kai frowned. ”What are they saying?”

”They’re asking for directions.”

Daniel blinked. ”Directions?”

Noah nodded slowly.

”They sound lost.”

At first Kai expected sympathy to appear on Noah’s face.

Instead, Noah went pale.

Terrifyingly pale.

”They’ve been asking...” His voice cracked. ”...for a very long time.”

The vibration beneath the rails intensified. Loose stones bounced gently between the sleepers. Rusted station signs rattled softly on their chains.

The waiting train behind them remained perfectly still.

Not a wheel moved.

Not a piston turned.

It almost felt protective.

As though it had deliberately placed itself between the platform and whatever was approaching through the darkness.

The conductor seemed to notice the same thing.

He turned toward the locomotive and removed his cap.

”Thank you, old friend.”

The engine answered.

A gentle puff of steam escaped from beneath its cylinders, drifting upward like a contented sigh.

Daniel’s jaw dropped.

”Did...” He looked at Kai. ”...did the train just respond to him?”

Kai nodded.

”I think it did.”

Daniel looked at Luna.

”I’ve officially stopped questioning anything.”

”Probably for the best,” she replied.

At the far end of the tracks, the darkness began to shift.

Not because something emerged from it.

Because the darkness itself was moving.

Rolling forward in slow waves.

At first Kai thought it was smoke.

Then he realized smoke rose.

This flowed.

It spread across the rails, crawled over the platform, and washed against the station walls like a living tide. It wasn’t blocking the light.

It was consuming it.

The brass lanterns hanging above Platform Zero dimmed one after another. Golden light faded into pale gray before disappearing entirely. Within moments, only two lights remained.

The warm headlamp of the waiting train.

And the cold beam approaching from the tunnel.

A small hand slipped into Kai’s.

He looked down in surprise.

The little girl stood beside him.

She had never reached for him before.

Her fingers were freezing.

Not cold.

Freezing.

Like ice.

She didn’t speak.

She simply held on.

Kai gently squeezed her hand.

”You know what it is.”

She nodded.

”I remember...”

Then stopped.

Frustration flashed across her face.

”No.”

Her free hand pressed against her forehead.

”I almost remember.”

Kai crouched until they were eye level.

”Don’t force it.”

”I have to.”

”You don’t.”

”I do.”

Her breathing became uneven.

”If I don’t remember...” She looked directly into his eyes. ”...someone else will forget.”

A strange ache settled in Kai’s chest.

Who was she?

Really?

Every answer seemed to create more questions. Yet standing here, watching fear creep into her expression, the mystery suddenly felt less important than the possibility of losing her.

Before Kai could respond, the conductor stepped forward.

Not toward them.

Toward the darkness.

His voice carried across the station with quiet authority.

”This line is closed.”

Silence answered him.

Then came a whistle.

Short.

Sharp.

Almost mocking.

The conductor didn’t flinch.

”There is no scheduled arrival.”

The rails shook harder.

Steam hissed beneath the platform.

”I will ask once.”

His tone remained polite, but steel hid beneath every word.

”Identify yourself.”

For several heartbeats, nothing happened.

Then a voice drifted from the tunnel.

It wasn’t loud.

It didn’t need to be.

Every person on the platform heard it perfectly.

”I...”

The voice was strangely familiar.

Young.

Calm.

Gentle.

”I’m looking for my passengers.”

Kai froze.

His stomach dropped.

He knew that voice.

Not from the station.

Not from the railway.

From somewhere else.

Somewhere impossible.

He turned toward Noah.

Noah looked equally shaken.

”You know it too,” Kai whispered.

Noah nodded slowly.

”But that’s impossible.”

The voice spoke again.

Closer this time.

”I’ve searched through abandoned endings.”

Steam rolled across the rails.

The second headlamp grew larger.

”I’ve searched through forgotten beginnings.”

The darkness rippled like disturbed water.

The conductor’s expression hardened.

Every instinct Kai possessed screamed at him to step back.

To run.

To leave.

Yet he couldn’t move.

Because he knew that voice.

He had heard it before.

Long before the train.

Long before the little girl.

Long before the Witness.

The realization struck him with such force that his breath caught in his throat.

It wasn’t a memory from this story.

It was a memory from his own life.

The voice spoke one final time before the second locomotive emerged from the darkness.

”Kai.”

It knew his name.

”Don’t you recognize the person who used to tell your story?”
