Chapter 436: Establishing The Commercial Law ( 1 )

While Xue Ya’er was discussing the salt workshop with her husband, Yao Zhi arrived at the plantation area located on the outskirts of the Northeast City.

She walked toward the Qi Gathering Formation and squatted down. Compared to before, the soil quality inside the formation had improved by leaps and bounds.

Although it was still dry and hard, the soil was no longer sandy. With proper irrigation and fertilization, this plot of land should be ready for planting.

While she was inspecting it, she turned to Ling Ershi and asked, “Ershi, how is the progress of well-digging in the city?”

Ling Ershi had not been idle while his Master rested in the guest courtyard. He had been gathering information within the city.

So when he heard his Master’s question, he replied, “Master, the soldiers have finished digging the well inside the city.”

Yao Zhi was surprised by how efficient the soldiers were. Today was only the 5th day since she marked the area for digging the well, and they had already finished the work.

Thinking about the number of soldiers staying in the military camp, it was understandable. There were more than 120,000 people working together. It would be strange if they took a long time to finish the work.

Since there was a lot of manpower, she didn’t want to waste it. Taking out a table, a chair, a stack of paper, and a set of stationery from her system storage, Yao Zhi started drawing the design for the plantation.

She had asked her personal assistant to draw the design, but she didn’t print it out. It cost too much, and she needed a lot of points. She should save as much as she can.

Copying the design, she drew it on the paper. The design was very detailed. It not only divided the area according to the type of crops, but also included the irrigation system, animal farms, kitchens, guard posts, and dormitories.

The area inside the Qi Gathering Formation would be used as the plantation area. The formation was circular in shape, and its diameter spanned 20 li, which equaled around 20,000 acres.

If they planted wheat based on the current era’s climate and methods, they could produce at most around 3,700 tons from a single harvest. If they ground it into white flour, they could obtain at least 2,800 tons.

Although it sounded like a lot, it could only feed at most 14,000 people for a year. The number of commoners living in the Northeast City alone had already exceeded this figure.

Therefore, she had to apply modern planting methods and plant twice a year.

With the mountain springs as their water source, she would be able to turn this land into a paddy field. After the rice was husked, they could obtain at least around 36,300 tons of milled rice.

If she changed the methods and improved the climate, they would be able to harvest around 27,000 tons of wheat. Using a dual-cropping cycle, they would be able to feed around 650,000 people in a year.

The surplus harvest could be stored in granaries in case of emergencies or sold to merchants to generate income for the city.

While Yao Zhi was lost in thought and busy drawing and writing, Ling Ershi sat not far from her and started regulating his internal energy.

He had witnessed his Master setting up an array in this place. After the array was set up, he noticed that his internal energy improved drastically whenever he meditated here.

Both of them focused on their own tasks. Without realizing it, the sun had slanted to the west, and the sky was now dyed in colorful hues of red, orange, purple, and gold.

When Yao Zhi finally finished copying all the designs and information, she stored everything in her system’s storage and stretched her sore muscles. Her hand ached from writing for hours.

Feeling hungry, she took out 2 bowls of rice topped with Kung Pao chicken from the shared manor. She called Ling Ershi over, and the two of them had their late meal before riding their horses back to the General’s residence.

At the same time, the commoners were currently lining up in several locations inside the Northeast City.

They heard that the well had finally been finished and that the soldiers had cleaned up the mud. The water was also cleaner than the wells they had dug before. What’s more, the amount of water was plentiful.

When the soldiers finally started distributing the water, they realized that the water’s surface was at the same level as the ground. Although there was a lot of water, each person was only allowed to get 1 bucket.

The city was still in a mess, and there were a lot of places that needed water. Therefore, this water was reserved for cooking and drinking.

As for how they washed their clothes or bathed, they had to go to the area near the mountain foothills. There was a small river there. The water was shallow, but it was enough for them to take a bath or wash their clothes.

But due to the distance, only a small number of people went there. Most of the commoners only wiped their bodies with a wet cloth.

While the soldiers were distributing water, a group of caravans was getting closer to the east gate of the Northeast City. The soldiers guarding the gate saw the group and raised their spears to block their way.

“Stop!”

When the caravans were a few meters away from the gate, they finally stopped, and everyone came out of the carriages.

The guards narrowed their eyes when they saw the group dressed like wealthy merchants.

The leader of the caravans walked over and cupped his fists.

“Greetings, Sir. We are merchants from the east. We heard that the barbarians were no longer occupying this city, so we came over to see if we could earn some money by selling our goods.”
