Chapter 292: Winter Disaster ( 15 )

Due to the bad weather and avalanches in several areas, it took the army five days to reach the disaster area.

When Fu Chen’an saw the situation, he felt grateful to his wife.

At this moment, the temporary barracks were built on an open area 25 kilometers from the river. Not far from the barracks, they had already built a temporary settlement for the refugees.

There were a total of more than 100,000 refugees living in this settlement, and they were running out of food and medicine.

So when the news that the provisions had arrived spread, Jiang Fei went out to check the supplies personally.

When Fu Chen’an saw his mentor, he walked over and greeted him, ”This subordinate greets Vice General Jiang.”

Jiang Fei was not someone who put importance on etiquette. Waving his hand, he asked, ”How many grains did you bring?”

”Reporting to the Vice General, we brought over a total of 80,000 jins of grains and some medicinal herbs.”

Hearing this, Jiang Fei nodded and went to check the grains and medicinal herbs.

Only after he saw that the grains were not mixed with sand and the herbs were in good condition did he say, ”All of you did a good job. Go take a rest for today. Tomorrow, all of you will take turns with other soldiers to clear the road and rescue the villagers.”

The soldiers cupped their fists, bowed, and replied in unison, ”Understood.”

After they were dismissed, Fu Chen’an went to build his tent with the soldiers. When he was done, he took off his armor and went to check the situation in the temporary barracks and settlement.

The temporary military barracks were the same as usual. Besides the tired soldiers and lack of hygiene, everything else was almost the same as the White Tiger Army’s barracks.

What shocked him was the situation in the temporary settlement.

Not to mention the lack of clean water, even the porridge distributed to the refugees was very thin, as the grain was barely visible. It’s not that the soldiers were trying to embezzle the provisions; the reason was that no one guessed that the number of refugees would be so high.

Every day, a large group of people arrived and settled in temporarily. The grains brought by Jiang Fei and the soldiers were barely enough to last them for ten days.

Although the General sent over more grains, they couldn’t guarantee that it would be enough to last them until the imperial court sent disaster relief grains. So, they had to ration the grains carefully. As long as they were not starved to death, it was enough.

Due to the lack of warm clothes and coal, most people caught colds and got a fever. The amount of medicine brought by Jiang Fei was not much, so they could only add more water to the medicine.

Fu Chen’an saw the soldiers boil 5 packs of medicine with a huge pot of water.

The medicine was boiled for half an hour to extract all the medicinal properties. Afterward, the soldiers would give each of the patients one bowl of the medicine.

The medicine was no longer a dark color but looked more like tea. When he took a sniff, he was barely able to smell the herbs.

After he checked the situation of the refugees, he finally went to the area where they stored the water. Since they couldn’t get clean water, the soldiers gathered the snow and melted it.

Since the snow had some debris, the soldiers filtered it using a clean fabric and boiled it again for another 10 minutes before it was used as drinking water.

When Fu Chen’an saw this, he nodded and went to check the place where the medicinal herbs were stored.

Unlike water, they couldn’t find any medicinal herbs in the surrounding areas. So when he stepped into the tent, there was only a sack of medicine left.

With so many people getting sick and so little medicine, it was no wonder that they had to dilute the medicine so much. He looked around, and when he was sure that no one was around, he took out the medicine prepared by his wife from his spatial bag.

He only took out 20,000 packs of the medicine and placed them near the sacks. When he was done, he returned to his tent for a rest.

Since the grain was limited, the soldiers were only given a bowl of thin porridge and a piece of hard steamed cake. Their portion was the same as that of the refugees.

Fu Chen’an used a basin of water to wipe his body and washed his face and hands before he started to eat. Compared to the food prepared by his wife, the food tasted bland and hard.

He didn’t take out the food stored in his spatial bag and ate like the others. When they were done eating, everyone lay on their bed to have a rest.

Fu Chen’an was tired, so he took out his gourd and drank some medicinal water before he went to sleep.

Meanwhile, in the past five days, Yao Zhi was living in Zhu’an Town with her people. They had been distributing porridge, steamed buns, and brown sugar ginger soup for six days.

Today, she went to the General’s mansion with Ling Shi’er to deliver the pelts, dried mushrooms, and eggs. When she arrived, she was led to the backyard hall.

Inside, Xue Ya’er had been waiting for her. Seeing her coming, she smiled and said, ”Young Master Lei, please have a seat.”

Yao Zhi cupped her fists and greeted her before she took her seat. After the maidservant served her tea and refreshments, she said, ”Madam, my visit today is to deliver the goods.”

Xue Ya’er smiled and replied, ”Young Master Lei, in the future, you can just send your people to deliver the goods. There is no need for you to make the visit personally.”

”Well, I also have a favor to ask Madam,” Yao Zhi said after she took a sip of her tea.
