Chapter 295: Disaster Relief ( 3 )

Although the current Emperor was his granddaughter’s son, it didn’t guarantee that they would stand on the same side. So, Jin Wenyang always prepared another escape route for his family.

He thought for a long time before he said, ”For now, we shouldn’t do anything rash. Observe the situation first. With the Duke of Zhenguo’s prestige increasing, sooner or later, the Emperor will deal with him. By then, Lu Qianxuan will lose his backer.”

Jin Liangkai nodded and added, ”Without his backer, it will be easy for us to take over the White Tiger Army.”

Although no one responded to his words, they had the same thoughts.

In the next few days, the news about disaster relief spread widely. At this moment, every soldier serving in the White Tiger Army had heard about Lei Feng’s name and his contributions.

While they had never met him in person, their admiration for him and the Lei family was no less than that for the heroes fighting on the battlefield.

Sitting inside a tent, Jiang Fei was writing a report to Lu Qianxuan. He not only recorded everything that had happened in this place in detail, but he also included the amount of supplies they received, used, and how much was left.

While he was writing, he suddenly found that the numbers did not match. Frowning, he put down his brush and called out, ”Guard.”

Hearing his call, one of the soldiers entered the tent. After saluting him, the soldier asked, ”Vice General, what order do you have?”

”Call Battalion Commander Bai and Battalion Commander Gao over.”

”Yes.”

Fifteen minutes later, Bai Yunxiao and Gao Yan entered the tent. Before they even finished their greetings, Jiang Fei waved his hand and asked, ”Bai Yunxiao, Gao Yan, do you have the list of supplies you sent over a few days ago?”

Hearing this, both of them nodded, and Bai Yunxiao replied, ”Replying to the Vice General, the list is with this subordinate.”

”Give me the list.”

Although they didn’t know why he wanted the list now, Bai Yunxiao nodded and went to his tent to fetch it.

After receiving the list, Jiang Fei started comparing the numbers. Half an hour later, he looked at them and asked, ”Are you sure that the numbers listed in this record are correct?”

”Vice General, is there something wrong with the list?” Gao Yan asked.

Instead of answering him, Jiang Fei pushed the booklets forward and said, ”Take a look for yourselves.”

Feeling curious, both Gao Yan and Bai Yunxiao walked closer and checked the booklets. When they saw the discrepancy, they were shocked.

”It’s impossible! We counted the amount of supplies when we loaded them, and during unloading, we counted them twice,” Bai Yunxiao exclaimed in surprise.

”If you don’t believe the report, then go check it yourselves,” Jiang Fei replied.

To ensure that nothing went wrong, they took their leave and went to the granary area.

By right, the amount of grain and medicine should have been less than one-third. But when they checked the tent where the grain was stored, it was half full.

”This... where did these grains come from?” Gao Yan muttered in disbelief.

Usually, during the disaster relief process, the most common problem was officials embezzling the grain or the money used to buy grain and medicine.

This was the first time they had encountered this kind of situation. Not only was there no embezzlement, but someone had even given them grain and medicine without leaving a trace.

They checked the amount of grain and medicine for a long time before returning to Jiang Fei’s tent.

Seeing them come back, he raised his eyebrows and asked, ”How is it?”

”Vice General, the numbers match the report. But who is so kind and generous to give us so much grain and medicine without even leaving a name?” Bai Yunxiao said doubtfully.

”No matter who this person is, this is a good thing for us. But we still can’t lower our guard. I will report this matter truthfully to the General. Both of you help me keep an eye on the granary. Report immediately if you find anything suspicious,” Jiang Fei said.

”Understood,” both Bai Yunxiao and Gao Yan replied in unison.

After they left, they didn’t return to their tents but went to check the situation in the temporary settlement. When they arrived, they saw the soldiers distributing something. From the smell, they could recognize the scent of ginger.

Gao Yan stopped one of the soldiers and asked, ”What is this?”

The soldier was startled to see them and quickly saluted. ”Reporting to the Battalion Commander, this is brown sugar ginger soup.”

They had heard some rumors about a new item introduced by someone who bought it from an overseas merchant. From the investigator’s report, this soup was something given to the refugees by Lei Feng.

No one knew where he got this so-called brown sugar, but with his wide connections and family background, they could guess that it must have come from some unknown countries across the sea.

”Where did you get this?” Bai Yunxiao asked.

”Reporting to Battalion Commander Bai, this soup was delivered under the military physician’s orders. It is said to warm the body and prevent colds.”

Hearing this, he waved his hand and said, ”Go back to your work.”

”Yes.”

After the soldier left, they went to the temporary military kitchen and saw the cooks busy boiling several large pots of brown-colored soup.

Beside them, Physician Mu was nagging nonstop.

”Don’t put in too much, this thing is very expensive!”

”Are you feeding a bird? Who told you to smash the ginger slices into pulp?! Just crack them a little to make it easier to extract the juice!”

”Add more water. If you don’t have enough, go get more!”

They exchanged glances and walked over. Standing behind the old physician, they watched for a while before Gao Yan asked, ”Physician Mu, where did you get these?”

They clearly remembered that they hadn’t brought any ginger, let alone something as rare as brown sugar.
