Chapter 283: Winter Disaster ( 6 )

”What does this matter have to do with the General?” the first guard asked with confusion.

”Did you forget that the General’s wife came from a wealthy family? As long as she shares a little bit of her family’s grains, it would be enough to feed these people for months.”

”What’s more, I heard that the White Tiger Army had a connection with a mysterious person. They could gather hundreds of thousands of jin of grains. Surely, they won’t watch and do nothing, right?”

When the guards heard his words, they nodded in agreement.

While everyone was feeling optimistic, Yao Zhi felt otherwise. The last time she donated the grains, they were exchanged for a lot of goods.

Even if she wanted to donate the grains again, to keep up her cover, she couldn’t give them for free. But at this moment, she knew that no matter how wealthy Xue Ya’er was, it was impossible for her alone to hold up everything.

As the donkey cart entered the town, Ling Shi’er asked, ”Master, where do you want to go?”

Hearing this, Yao Zhi came back to her senses and said, ”Go to the pharmacy first.”

”Okay.”

The pharmacy was located near the market lines, so they couldn’t ride the donkey cart there. After they entrusted the donkey cart to the stable keeper at the horse market, Yao Zhi and Ling Shi’er walked to the pharmacy.

Along the way, she saw several people huddled together at the corner of the alley. Seeing their unkempt appearance and thin, haggard bodies, she could guess their identities.

These people were the disaster victims. Those who didn’t have relatives would have to live on the street and become beggars.

Although she pitied them, she didn’t plan to give them money.

With just a glance, she knew that the number of beggars in the dark alleys was more than a hundred. If she gave one person some money, the rest would definitely rush over and ask for money, too.

Even if she had a lot of money, this was not the solution. Rather than giving a man a fish, it’s better to teach them how to fish.

From all the historical records she read in her previous life, 7 out of 10 people fleeing the disaster wouldn’t return to their homes. Most of them would settle down in new places or end up becoming bandits or beggars.

Through the millennia, this was one of the hardest problems the royal court was unable to solve. While she was trying to recall the solution she had read before, they had reached the pharmacy.

Standing outside the drug store, Yao Zhi saw lots of people lining up on the side, waiting for their turn to meet with the physician. Since she came to check the quality of her medicinal herbs, she walked to the counter directly.

Seeing this, one of the clerks greeted her and asked, ”Sister-in-law, are you here to buy herbs or sell herbs?”

Yao Zhi glanced at Ling Shi’er, and he placed the bamboo basket on the countertop. She lifted the fabric covering the items and said, ”Brother, I came to sell herbs. Please have a look.”

The clerk nodded and checked the goods. To avoid suspicion, Yao Zhi exchanged the vacuum bag for brown kraft paper.

This kraft paper was exchanged using vacuum bags. She chose the lowest quality available in the system, but when the clerk saw the paper, he was still surprised.

Although the paper was brown-colored, the surface was thick, smooth, and sturdy. The grains were even, and the color was evenly distributed. With just one look, he knew that these papers were not cheap.

He glanced at Yao Zhi before he untied the hemp rope and checked the items inside. The moment he saw the dried medicinal herbs, his eyes widened in surprise.

He unwrapped all the medicinal herbs and checked them carefully. After 20 minutes, he finally said, ”Sister-in-law, I can’t decide on the price for your medicinal herbs. Please wait for a moment, I need to inform the store manager.”

Hearing this, Yao Zhi let out a sigh of relief. This meant that the medicinal herbs sold in the system’s shop were of high quality. She nodded and replied, ”Okay.”

While the clerk went to inform the store manager, Yao Zhi looked around. The common herbs were stored in the large medicine cabinets placed on the wall behind the counter.

As for the rare medicine, it was stored in separate boxes and displayed on the small cabinet placed on the side of the large medicine cabinets.

Inside the boxes were ginseng, Lingzhi, snow lotus, cordyceps, and Bei Mu.

She only knew these 5 herbs because she used them often in her novels before, so she did some research and saw the pictures. The rest of the rare herbs, she had no knowledge about them at all.

Not long after, the clerk returned with a middle-aged man. The man must be having a good life, as his face was rosy and his steps were light. Despite his big belly, he was agile and very spirited.

The moment he saw Yao Zhi, there was only a flash of surprise in his eyes. He smiled and walked over. With cupped fists, he greeted them, ”Greetings, lady. I’m the manager of this store. You can call me Manager Wu.”

Yao Zhi returned his greeting and replied, ”Greetings, Manager Wu. My surname is Yao. This is my brother, you can call him Shi’er.”

Hearing this, Manager Wu glanced at them and didn’t see any resemblance.

At this moment, Ling Shi’er was using the skin mask and contact lenses. So his features resembled the people of Great Yan, and he had black pupils.

If not for his height, he would be able to mix among the crowd, and no one would notice him.

After observing them for a moment, Manager Wu said, ”My subordinate said that you are here to sell herbs. May I have a look at them first?”

”Sure,” Yao Zhi nodded.
