Chapter 289: Winter Disaster ( 12 )

When she heard the guard’s words, Yao Zhi frowned and muttered, ”My people can’t handle long hours of working nonstop.”

After a moment of pause, she continued, ”Sir, please inform the refugees that we will close the stall in two hours. We will continue tomorrow morning.”

The guard looked at the people lining up and said hesitantly, ”Young Master Lei, you see, there are so many people here. If you close the stall, then they might cause trouble.”

Yao Zhi smiled and replied, ”Well, aren’t there the town guards?”

Before the guard could say more, she interrupted him, ”My people have been working since morning without resting. I’m distributing porridge and steamed buns out of sympathy and didn’t owe anyone anything. I won’t put strangers’ well-being above my own people’s.”

After she said this, she cupped her fists and bowed slightly. ”Thank you for your understanding, Sir.”

Without giving the guard any chance to persuade her, Yao Zhi returned to the store and said, ”Ling Yi, tell the brothers and Xi Yi that we will stop in two hours. Just prepare another batch and close the kitchen. We will continue tomorrow.”

Ling Yi wiped the sweat off his face and nodded. ”Understood.”

While the Ling Squad was delighted to be able to take a rest, the refugees lining up outside were unhappy. Those lining up at the back of the line had started complaining.

But with the guards watching them closely, they couldn’t do anything even if they wanted to cause trouble. To ensure more people got the food, the guards decided to help distribute it.

Seeing this, Ling Yi told his brothers to let them do it, and they went to the kitchen to help out.

With the addition of the guards, after the two-hour limit was up, the number of people who didn’t get the food was less than 50. Although they couldn’t get porridge, Yao Zhi gave them two steamed buns.

The first day of doing a good deed finally finished. After sending off the guards, Yao Zhi closed the store and told her people to take a bath.

Meanwhile, she bought 40 portions of braised meat from the system’s shop, costing her 160 points. There were still steamed buns and porridge left in the kitchen, so she decided to make a pot of egg drop soup.

When Ling Yi and his brothers came out, they saw their Master was busy in the kitchen. Seeing the food on the kitchen table, they were stunned.

”What are you standing there for? Bring the food to the store, the soup is almost ready,” Yao Zhi said.

”Yes, Master.”

Everyone was hungry and tired, so she added 5 drops of spiritual spring water into the soup to nourish their bodies.

10 minutes later, food was served, and Yao Zhi sat in the main seat. She glanced at them and said, ”Everyone worked hard today. No need to be restrained and eat to your heart’s content.”

”Thank you, Master,” they replied in unison with bowed heads.

After she said this, she took 2 steamed buns, a bowl of egg drop soup, and 5 pieces of braised meat. When she was done, she brought the food to her room.

Only after she left did everyone dare to pick up their bowls and chopsticks. Everyone ate happily and finished the meal in less than an hour.

Everything was eaten cleanly, not even a drop of soup was left. They worked together to clean the table and wash the dishes. At 7 o’clock in the evening, they finally returned to their rooms and went to sleep.

Early the next morning, Yao Zhi woke up before dawn and went to the kitchen to boil water. Just after the water was boiled, Xi Yi and Xi Si walked in.

Seeing her, Xi Yi was taken aback. ”Master, if you need anything, just tell Xi Si or me. You don’t have to do it yourself.”

Yao Zhi waved her hand and said, ”I’m not a noble lady. I’m used to working. The water is ready. Use it to wash up first, then we need to prepare breakfast.”

Since she had said so, Xi Yi could only listen to her. Today, Yao Zhi didn’t put on any disguise and wore her usual clothes.

When Ling Yi and the rest woke up, breakfast was ready. To ensure that they had enough energy to work, Yao Zhi made steamed rice, stir-fried tomato and eggs, grilled fish, and fresh milk. She added honey to the milk so it’s not too bland.

Although there were not many dishes, the amount was generous. In the winter, it was a luxury to be able to eat fresh vegetables. When they saw the sumptuous breakfast, everyone was flattered.

After yesterday, they no longer insisted on following the rules during meal time. They put the tables together and sat at the same table.

”Everyone, eat more. Today, we will have a lot of work to do,” Yao Zhi said before they started to eat.

”Yes, Master.”

Everyone enjoyed their breakfast and finished in half an hour. At 5 o’clock in the morning, they started cooking porridge and making steamed buns.

Yesterday, Yao Zhi didn’t tell the guards when they would start the porridge distribution. So, the guards took the liberty and told the refugees that the porridge would be distributed at 7 o’clock in the morning.

To increase efficiency, the Magistrate ordered the town guards to build three more porridge stalls and brought them over.

When Yao Zhi opened the store, she saw that the number of guards coming today was more than yesterday. Unlike yesterday, today’s temperature was colder.

After she greeted the guards, she asked Ling Shiqi to help her build two campfires in the backyard.

To avoid causing a fire accident, he used mud and stones to build the temporary stoves. After the fire was built, Yao Zhi asked them to bring over two big iron pots.

”Master, what are you planning to do?” Ling Shi’er asked.
