Chapter 297: Reward And Punishment ( 1 )

Xue Ya’er took another sip of the brown sugar ginger soup before she asked, ”Young Master Lei, would it be possible for you to help me procure more brown sugar?”

Hearing this, Yao Zhi confirmed her doubts. The Great Yan Kingdom didn’t have sugar.

She tried to recall the historical records from her previous life and remembered that sugarcane originated in Southeast Asia and was officially documented as spreading to China during the Warring States period.

Since she knew this was a novel world, she had assumed the author would include modern elements to smooth the Male Lead’s progress. Because of this, she had become more reckless.

Seeing her remain silent, Xue Ya’er thought she disagreed and said, ”Young Master Lei, if you are worried about the price, I can assure you that my Xue family can afford it.”

Hearing this, Yao Zhi shook her head. ”I believe Madam has enough money to buy brown sugar. It is just that this item is produced by my family, and the amount is limited.”

”To tell you the truth, this brown sugar is made from a crop called sugarcane. My grandfather obtained the sugarcane seeds during his travels overseas.”

”It took decades for my family to successfully cultivate it and develop the method to produce brown sugar. So, I can’t promise that I can get it for you.”

Xue Ya’er thought for a moment and asked, ”Is it because your family doesn’t want to spread news of this sugarcane?”

Yao Zhi sighed. ”That’s part of the reason. Another is that my family discovered that many people have been investigating us in recent months.”

”If this continues, I may have to return to my family and won’t be able to continue our cooperation. My family forbids descendants from involving themselves with imperial court affairs.”

”This time, I avoided punishment only because this matter concerns countless lives. Therefore, I’m sorry for being unable to help you with this, Madam.”

After saying this, Yao Zhi stood up and gave a deep bow. Startled, Xue Ya’er quickly stood and stopped her.

She had always thought that a descendant of the Nuwa Clan would be invincible and fearless. But after hearing this, she realized how naïve that thought was.

For such a family to survive for thousands of years, their rules must be even stricter than those of the imperial family.

With this realization, she sighed and nodded. ”I understand. I’m sorry for putting you in a difficult position.”

Glancing outside at the waiting crowd, she added, ”Since you are busy, I won’t disturb you any longer.”

Yao Zhi nodded. ”Thank you for your understanding, Madam.”

After seeing her off, Yao Zhi returned to her room and called out, ”System, come out.”

”Host, is there anything you need?”

”System, can you tell me everything about this world? Why do they have paper but not brown sugar? What exactly is the world setting the author created?”

”I’m sorry, Host. You can only discover the world setting by yourself. The system is not allowed to reveal it.”

”Even if I pay you?” Yao Zhi threw out a bait.

The system fell silent for a long time before asking hesitantly, ”How much can the Host pay?”

”Well, it depends on how much you are willing to disclose.”

After another pause, it replied, ”The system cannot reveal plot details, but it can provide a list of items available in this world.”

Yao Zhi didn’t care about the dog-blood relationship between the Male Lead and Female Lead. As long as her friend, Xue Ya’er, was able to alter her ending and avoid being killed by the Female Lead, she had no intention of getting involved further.

What she needed most right now was indeed a list of available items. She didn’t want to be caught off guard again by introducing things that didn’t exist in this era.

After making up her mind, she asked, ”How much do you want?”

”Since this puts the system at risk of annihilation by the main system, the cost is high.”

”Just tell me the price.”

”...2 million.”

Yao Zhi frowned. ”Only 2 million? Are you that kind?”

The system added softly, ”...merit points.”

This time, Yao Zhi was stunned. ”How much did you say?”

”...2 million merit points.”

The mechanical voice was softer than usual, but its ability to provoke her was stronger than ever.

”2 million merit points?! You!”

Yao Zhi felt her vision darken and pressed the acupuncture point beneath her nose to steady herself. After recovering, she asked, ”You dare to ask for so much?”

”Well, the system is risking annihilation to reveal this secret. The price is reasonable.”

”Do you think I’m the God of Wealth? 2 million merit points is outrageous! Right now, I only have 40,000 merit points.”

”Host, you have many valuable items in storage. You can sell them for points and exchange them for merit points.”

The more she listened, the angrier she became. Taking a deep breath, Yao Zhi said, ”Forget it. I don’t want the list anymore.”

After saying this, she lay down on her bed and closed her eyes. No matter how the system tried to persuade her, she played dead and ignored it.

Seeing how stubborn its host was, the system almost shed tears, if that were possible.

Having no choice, it was forced to contact the world’s Heavenly Dao and ask for its permission. After a back-and-forth negotiation, they finally reached an agreement.

When the system returned, the sky had darkened, and Yao Zhi woke up from her long nap.

”Host, are you sure you don’t want the list? I can lower the price.”

Yao Zhi knew that her system was a black-hearted opportunist. Since it was ruthless, she couldn’t be soft-hearted. She ignored it and let it offer the best price.

From how anxious the system was, she had a suspicion that if she did something that affected the development of this world, not only herself, but even the system might be punished.
