Chapter 296: Disaster Relief ( 4 )

When he heard Gao Yan’s question, Physician Mu turned to them and asked in surprise, ”Wasn’t this sent over by the General?”

”No, we didn’t bring any ginger, let alone that expensive sugar,” Gao Yan shook his head.

Just after he said this, Fu Chen’an arrived and saluted them. ”Reporting to Battalion Commander Bai and Battalion Commander Gao, the supplies sent by the Lei family have been checked and stored in the granary. This is the list.”

Hearing this, Bai Yunxiao took the thick booklet and read it. When he saw the amount of supplies donated by Lei Feng, he was stunned. ”The Lei family is indeed wealthy. They sent over so many things.”

Gao Yan was also curious and checked the list.

Seeing that Lei Feng had sent a total of 150,000 sets of winter clothes, he clicked his tongue and added, ”Calling the Lei family the richest family in the Great Yan is not an exaggeration at all.”

Physician Mu didn’t care about the other things and was very pleased with the amount of medicine, ginger, and brown sugar he received. With this, they would be able to get through the winter safely.

Standing at the side and listening to them praise Lei Feng and the Lei family, Fu Chen’an couldn’t hold back his smile.

He was proud of his wife. It wasn’t easy for her to earn money, yet she didn’t hesitate to spend it to buy so many supplies and donate them. His wife even used her connection with the Nuwa clan to obtain the brown sugar.

Thanks to the timely donation and Fu Chen’an’s secret support, the White Tiger Army was able to make sure that the refugees were taken care of. Even after losing everything, there was no discontent among the refugees at all.

After receiving the winter clothes, fewer people suffered from colds and fever, which helped them avoid an outbreak of plague.

When Yao Zhi received the information from Ling Shijiu, she heaved a sigh of relief.

The most troubling matter during a disaster was not the rescue or rebuilding process, but the outbreak of plague due to a lack of water, food, and medicine.

Now that the situation was under control, with enough water to maintain hygiene, the possibility of a plague outbreak had been reduced to below 5%. Unless something unexpected happened, her husband would return safe and sound.

”Shijiu, you have been working hard these past days. Take a day off and rest properly.”

Ling Shijiu bowed and said, ”Thank you, Master.”

After he left her room, Yao Zhi went out to check the situation outside.

It had been half a month since she started distributing porridge and steamed buns to the refugees. But until now, there was still no news about the imperial court allocating money or grain for disaster relief.

Compared to before, the temperature was lower. The refugees only wore thin, dirty clothes. If the temperature continued to drop, many would freeze to death.

She wanted to distribute winter clothes to the people, but she was currently in the center of attention.

Many people had been investigating the sources of her grains. If she provided winter clothes as well, she wouldn’t be able to explain it if someone dug deeper into her fabricated family background.

With this concern, she held back and distributed cold and fever medicine as a precaution instead.

To cover the source of the goods, she specifically went to the warehouse in the middle of the night and asked Luo Bo and his escort agency to deliver the goods to her storefront during the day.

When people saw that he received so many goods, their suspicions lessened.

While she was lost in thought, a group of soldiers arrived. The refugees saw the emblem on the horse carriage and quickly moved aside.

Seeing the people suddenly kneel down, Yao Zhi came back to her senses. When she saw a beautiful, slender hand reaching out from behind the curtain, she quickly walked over.

Xue Ya’er came out of the carriage and said, ”Everyone, please rise.”

The refugees kowtowed to her and replied in unison, ”Thank you, Madam.”

Everyone knew about the famous General’s wife.

Despite her lowly background, she was generous and kind. She had helped many commoners after marrying the General. Compared to the daughters of other noble families, the commoners felt closer to her.

Yao Zhi was surprised to see her come in person and greeted her, ”Greetings, Madam.”

Xue Ya’er reached out to stop her and said, ”Young Master Lei, it’s been a while. How have you been?”

”I’m doing well,” Yao Zhi replied politely. After a moment of pause, she gestured and said, ”Madam, please come inside.”

Xue Ya’er nodded and walked into the store. She thought it would be lavishly decorated, but upon seeing the simple yet elegant design, she was taken aback.

There were several long tables placed near the wall and one in the center of the store. Around them were a total of 30 chairs. From the arrangement, it seemed that she planned to target commoners as her customers.

After they took a seat, Xi Si came with a tray. She served a bowl of brown sugar ginger soup to Xue Ya’er and a bowl of honey water to Yao Zhi.

Seeing this, Xue Ya’er took a sip and said, ”Young Master Lei, I came today to ask for your favor.”

Yao Zhi nodded. ”Madam, if it is within my capability, I will definitely help.”

Hearing this, Xue Ya’er smiled. ”Steward Han told me about the goods you donated a few days ago. Among them, I saw something called brown sugar.”

”I wonder if that sugar is this?” she asked, glancing at the bowl in front of her.

”It is.”

While Yao Zhi looked calm, her heart was beating fast. She didn’t know whether this place had brown sugar or not. But from what she had seen in the market, she knew that sweeteners existed in this era.
