Sweet Nostalgia of the 80s

Chapter 907: Chapter 907: A Whiff of Gunpowder

Cuihua’s family is hosting a happy event today, and everyone in the village knows it, Gu Shuangshuang could easily find out.

As soon as you arrive at the gate, you can feel a wave of joy washing over you.

In the village, a wedding means setting tables.

Borrow a few tables and stools to set up a tent, light up the big stove, place the iron pot, invite a few villagers who are good cooks, and start serving the guests.

As Gu Shuangshuang walked into the yard and passed through the hallway, she could hear people chattering away.

”That Cuihua sure is lucky.”

”Who’s to say otherwise? Tian Niu, such a promising man, has taken her for his bride. If it hadn’t been for Tian Niu’s father’s fall that left him in that state, with a heap of debts at home, I reckon Tian Niu wouldn’t have married her.”

”Do you think she can be happy? Tian Niu still has another woman in his heart; how could Cuihua’s heart be so big?”

”It’s their choice, what can you do?”

”Enough, enough, no more gossiping. It wouldn’t be good if the family overheard.”

As she walked, all kinds of gossip entered Gu Shuangshuang’s ears.

The more she heard, the angrier she became!

It turns out Tian Niu had sold himself for money!

The yard was bustling with activity, picking vegetables, washing dishes, steaming buns, it was incredibly lively.

Those villagers without chores to do all squeezed into the bridal chamber, joking with the newly-wed couple.

”Cuihua, Cuihua, you’ve really got your wish! Now that you’re married, hurry and work hard to give Tian Niu two strong and sturdy calves!”

”You don’t need to tell me that.” Cuihua blushed, her plump hand twisting the corner of her dress, as she timidly glanced at Tian Niu.

”We’re just concerned about you, aren’t we?”

”Right, right! Look at Tian Niu, he’s so strong, just like an ox! Tonight, you just wait to enjoy your good fortune.”

”Auntie Liu, you embarrass people by saying such things.” Cuihua covered her face with her hand; Auntie Liu saying such words in front of so many people, even someone with thick skin like hers felt embarrassed.

”What’s there to be embarrassed about? Once you’re married, you’ll have a man! And with a man, you get those sorts of things,” Auntie Liu said with giggles and laughs.

Tian Niu sat silently to the side, smoking, listening to the conversations of others, but his heart was on Gu Shuangshuang.

If today he were marrying Gu Shuangshuang, how great would that be?

If he heard these kinds of jokes, he’d surely be overjoyed.

Inside the room, a group of matrons and Cuihua laughed and chatted away, and a few men also joined in, poking fun at Tian Niu.

Cuihua, seeing Tian Niu not looking happy at all, walked over to him and tugged at him: ”All these relatives are here, can’t you put on a less gloomy face? Can’t you at least try to smile?”

After finishing his last puff of smoke, Tian Niu threw the cigarette butt on the ground and stamped it out: ”I know.”

”After we’re married, you won’t also think about frowning at me every day, will you?” Cuihua asked worriedly.

”I won’t. If I’ve married you, I’ll definitely be good to you.” This wasn’t about love; it was his responsibility as a man.

Since he had chosen Cuihua, even if he didn’t love her, he must be good to her.

Upon hearing Cuihua’s words, Tian Niu made an effort to show a smile uglier than crying whenever someone spoke to him.

As Gu Shuangshuang made her way here, many people saw her, and some already recognized her, bowing their heads and starting to whisper among themselves.

Some even began to sense the faint smell of gunpowder.

It seems that there might be quite a spectacle to watch today.

When Cuihua’s relatives heard the discussions about Gu Shuangshuang, they hurriedly ran to the bridal chamber and pulled Cuihua aside to whisper in her ear.
