I Became a Medical Genius in the 80s

Chapter 281: Chapter 280: As Flat as a Straight Line

Beisitian showed a helpless expression, saying she had been staying in the village, without any opportunity to listen to songs.

It’s rare to be so uninformed just because of not having the chance to listen to songs!

The three looked at Beisitian with eyes full of amazement.

”When you said you couldn’t sing, I thought you were just being humble, but you really can’t sing.” Li Shuzhen said with a wry smile.

Li Mingrong laughed heartily, ”Looks like I can escape being the last one now, someone will be at the bottom for me.”

Zhou Chunlai shook his head, ”It’s okay, Xiao Bei has a poor foundation, so we’ll just take it step by step.”

Beisitian pulled a long face; she wasn’t very interested in learning, ”Does everyone have to participate? Couldn’t there be a selection process so that those good at singing perform while I just clap from below?”

Li Mingrong grabbed Beisitian’s hand, ”Comrade Xiao Bei, don’t resist stubbornly, I understand your pain, I’ve been through this stage myself!”

Li Mingrong initially maintained some reserve, but after getting familiar with Beisitian, started clowning around. Clearly, she was the group’s jester, always making people laugh with her words.

”No way, the number of family members in our station isn’t many, counting all together we have less than thirty people, and among them, there will definitely be those pretending to be sick to get out of it, making the number even less.”

After Zhou Chunlai finished speaking, he saw Beisitian’s eyes light up and instantly raised a brow, saying, ”Don’t use that excuse with us, we know you’re a doctor, and we’ve heard other departments will participate too. Even if you don’t join the family performance, you have to participate in the medical team’s!”

Thinking about it, Beisitian realized she couldn’t escape, so she might as well practice hard; maybe by then, she could make a sound. However, she already planned to lip-sync with only mouth movements and no sound.

After all, with so many people, it’s easy to blend in.

”Xiao Bei, I want to hear your foundation levels, listen to me sing a line, and then you sing a line.” Zhou Chunlai said.

It seemed that among these three, Zhou Chunlai sang the best.

”Unity is strength!” Zhou Chunlai sang the first line.

Beisitian opened her mouth; she had never sung before. Suddenly being asked to sing, she really didn’t know how to make a sound.

”Go ahead and sing, it’s okay, there are no others here. We all have weak foundations. Only by helping each other can we improve, and it’s best not to embarrass our men all the time.” Li Shuzhen encouraged Beisitian with a smile.

”Unity is strength...” Beisitian managed to utter a sound.

Her singing shocked the three military wives, who looked at her with wide eyes.

”Xiao, Xiao Bei...” Li Mingrong was even a bit tongue-tied.

Zhou Chunlai rubbed his forehead, ”Uh...don’t just recite it, this lyric needs to be sung with ups and downs!”

Beisitian looked expressionless; she did not recite it...

The three exchanged glances. This girl really can’t sing. Singing the lyrics, there was no variation at all; it was as flat as a straight line!

Zhou Chunlai, unconvinced, slowed down and sang it two more times, trying to let Beisitian feel the tune and then follow along.

”Unity is strength!” Beisitian followed and sang a line.

The three family members fell silent again.

”We are singing, not reciting a poem. Even reciting a poem requires emotion!” Li Shuzhen took a deep breath.

Li Mingrong stifled a laugh, ”Turns out I’m pretty good at singing, at least one out of ten lines I sing is in tune!”

Zhou Chunlai was so exhausted that his mouth was dry, yet he still hadn’t taught Beisitian a single line.

Beisitian was on the verge of tears. She really put effort into learning, but for some reason, her singing never sounded like others’!

After over an hour of effort, it was close to nine o’clock, and the three family members were worn out, especially Zhou Chunlai and Li Shufen.

Finally, Zhou Chunlai gently held Beisitian’s hand, saying, ”Xiao Bei, maybe you should just pretend to be sick and take a leave.”

Beisitian: ”...”

Returning to the dormitory, Beisitian was so worn out that she went straight to the bathroom to shower, getting ready to go to bed.

Singing was even more exhausting than seeing patients!

”How was it?” Luo Xudong saw Beisitian entering with droopy eyelids and a lackluster demeanor and couldn’t help but laugh.

Although a bit unkind, he couldn’t shake the feeling that she now looked like a bullied little puppy, making one want to pet her.

Beisitian forced a smile, but her smile was very weak, ”I guess I don’t have any talent for singing. I didn’t even learn the first line of the song.”

After saying that, she immediately felt very frustrated, sitting on the bed with her head hanging down, not saying anything.

Luo Xudong tried hard to suppress the smile at the corners of his mouth, softly pulling her into his arms, ”What song are you learning?”

”Unity is strength,” Beisitian said weakly, and as soon as she finished speaking, she heard the man beside her begin to softly sing with a low, magnetic voice.

Beisitian opened her eyes wide to look; Luo Xudong’s lips parted slightly, and the song he sang was very pleasant, no, it wasn’t that the song was pleasant, but that his voice was as rich and intoxicating as wine!

Seeing Beisitian staring at him with her mouth agape in surprise, Luo Xudong’s eyes sparkled with some amusement as he lowered his head to kiss her.

Beisitian’s mouth was sealed, and after a couple of soft murmurs, she gave up her resistance.

After that day, Beisitian thought they had given up on having her sing, but to her surprise, the next day, Li Shuzhen seriously approached her, saying they must regroup and teach her properly, ensuring she learns to sing.

Her tone of speaking sounded like preparing for a tough battle, making Beisitian both amused and exasperated. She really didn’t need it!

Zhou Chunlai analyzed that Beisitian’s voice was actually pleasant to listen to, it’s just like she had never been exposed to singing before, giving the impression she never sang, which was unbelievable. You could even hum a tune while cooking at home; how could someone never have sung a word?

But regardless of whether that was the reason, Zhou Chunlai and the other two had rolled up their sleeves and were ready to put in the hard work!

From then on, Beisitian felt like the sky was grey...

”Beibei, why do you look so listless these days?”

No need to look up to see who it was, just hearing the nickname, she knew it was Tian Lei, and Beisitian no longer had the spare energy to deal with him.

Moreover, he only used that nickname when there was no one around, also afraid to bring unnecessary trouble to Beisitian.

”Learning to sing...” Beisitian sighed. She’s really not cut out for this; specialization in skills is important.

Tian Lei’s eyes lit up, ”Learning to sing, huh? Sing something for me; I can guide you a bit.”

”You can’t guide me,” Beisitian blinked.

Tian Lei was a bit unconvinced, ”My level is very high!”

Beisitian said meaningfully, ”Anyone who teaches me not only needs height but also depth!”

”Depth?” Tian Lei was baffled by her cryptic words.

”Xiao Bei can’t sing, don’t force her,” Luo Jiali walked in from outside, carrying two water kettles.

Tian Lei glared, ”Who says so? Xiao Bei can do anything!”
