A woman seated in the second row raised her hand. ”Congratulations on the win tonight, Marvin.”

”Thank you,” Marvin replied with a warm smile, setting the Oscar carefully on the podium beside him.

”How does it feel to become one of the youngest people ever to win Golden Globes, Grammys, and now an Academy Award?”

Marvin glanced down at the statuette.

”Honestly? Surreal.”

The room chuckled.

”I keep expecting somebody from the Academy to walk in and tell me there was a counting error.”

More laughter followed.

”But seriously, I’m incredibly grateful. Most people spend decades chasing something like this. I’m thirteen years old, so I don’t think I’ve fully processed what happened tonight yet.”

He shrugged.

”Ask me again in a week.”

The reporters laughed and scribbled notes.

”Number eighteen.”

Another journalist stood, holding a tape recorder. ”Your acceptance speech was remarkably composed. Who helped you write it?”

Marvin immediately pointed at himself. ”I’m a writer. If I can’t write a speech, I’ve got bigger problems than tonight.”

The room erupted with laughter.

”My mother did give me some advice, though. She told me to make a list of everyone I wanted to thank and to avoid talking for so long that the orchestra had to rescue the audience.”

More laughter.

”The rest was just speaking from the heart.”

”Number four.”

A British reporter rose from the side section.

”Marvin, can you tell us anything about your next film? We’ve heard comparisons to The Sixth Sense.”

”A few people have made those comparisons,” Marvin said carefully. ”The film is called The Others.”

Several journalists immediately began writing.

”It’s a gothic psychological thriller centered around a mother and her children living in an isolated house. Beyond that, I’m afraid the studio would probably have me tackled before I reached the parking lot.”

The room laughed.

”But I can say that if you enjoyed The Sixth Sense, there’s a good chance you’ll enjoy this one too.”

”Number twenty-two.”

An American entertainment reporter raised her hand. ”You’ve got successful films, bestselling books, and a music career. How is the new album coming along?”

”Very well.” Marvin nodded. ”I’ve completed most of it already. If everything stays on schedule, we’ll finish recording over the next few months and hopefully release it toward the end of summer.”

He smiled.

”Then Columbia Records gets to do all the hard work.”

Several reporters laughed knowingly.

”Number nine.”

A journalist from a literary magazine adjusted his glasses. ”Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone has become a publishing phenomenon. How do you balance writing fantasy novels while preparing for demanding dramatic roles?”

Marvin leaned back slightly. ”They exercise different muscles.”

The room quieted.

”Writing is solitary. It’s just you, your imagination, and a blank page. Acting is collaborative. You’re constantly reacting to directors, actors, and everyone around you.”

He paused.

”I enjoy switching between them. If I spent all year doing only one thing, I’d probably drive myself crazy.”

That answer earned several approving nods from the assembled journalists.

”And besides,” Marvin added with a grin, lifting the Oscar slightly, ”some hobbies come with better trophies than others.”

The press room broke into another round of laughter and applause.

”Number fifteen!”

A veteran entertainment reporter adjusted his glasses before speaking. ”Marvin, you’ve handled this press room better than actors three times your age. Where does that composure come from?”

A ripple of laughter moved through the room.

Marvin glanced around at the assembled journalists before answering. ”Honestly? I think it comes from paying attention.”

The room quieted.

”I’ve spent a lot of time reading,” Marvin replied. ”Probably more than most kids my age should.”

The room laughed.

”I’m not picky either. Fiction, history, biographies, science, mythology, philosophy, newspapers, industry books—if something looks interesting, I’ll usually read it.”

Several journalists exchanged glances.

”My mother used to joke that buying me books was cheaper than buying me toys because the books kept me occupied longer.”

A few reporters chuckled.

”When you spend years reading about different subjects and different people, you start noticing connections. You begin understanding how people think, what motivates them, and why they make certain decisions.”

He shrugged lightly.

”So when I watch interviews or walk into a room like this, it doesn’t feel particularly intimidating. Most conversations are just people trying to understand each other.”

A reporter nodded thoughtfully.

”Besides, every book teaches you something.”

Marvin smiled.

”Sometimes it’s something important. Sometimes it’s a random fact you’ll never need. The problem is my brain tends to keep both.”

That earned another round of laughter from the press room.

”Honestly, at this point, I probably remember more useless trivia than any thirteen-year-old should.”

The journalists laughed again, though more than a few suspected he wasn’t entirely joking.

”So I don’t really think of this as an interrogation or something scary. It’s just a conversation.”

The answer drew a few approving smiles.

Marvin shrugged lightly.

”You all have a job to do. I have a job to do. If we treat each other with respect, things usually work out pretty well.”

A few journalists chuckled.

”Besides,” he added, glancing at the Oscar resting on the table in front of him, ”this room is a lot less intimidating when you’re carrying one of these.”

The press room erupted into laughter and applause.

The handler tapped her watch, signaling that the press session had come to an end.

Marvin thanked the reporters one final time, picked up his Oscar, and followed an Academy usher back into the maze of backstage corridors.

The area remained busy despite the late hour.

Stagehands pushed equipment between sets. Production assistants hurried past carrying clipboards and headsets. Winners, presenters, and nominees drifted through the hallways under the watchful guidance of Academy staff.

Eventually, Marvin arrived near one of the auditorium entrances.

An usher stopped him with an apologetic smile.

”We’ll get you back to your seat as soon as the show goes to commercial.”

Marvin nodded.

That was standard procedure.

The Academy preferred audience movement to happen during commercial breaks whenever possible. The last thing anyone wanted was a celebrity wandering through the aisles while millions of viewers were watching a live acceptance speech.

So he waited beside the doorway, Oscar in hand, watching the ceremony unfold on a nearby monitor.

A few minutes later, the broadcast cut to commercials.

Immediately, the backstage area sprang into action.

”Okay, let’s move.”

The usher opened the doors.

Marvin slipped back into the auditorium and made his way down the carpeted aisle, the golden statuette tucked securely beneath his arm.

Marvin made his way back up the carpeted aisle, gripping the gold statuette.

Nicole Kidman caught him first, standing up from her seat. A bright, genuine smile stretched across her face. ”Congratulations, Marvin!”

Tom Cruise stood beside her, always the supportive peer. He pulled Marvin into a brief, firm hug. ”Congratulations, Marvin!” The gesture of goodwill shone clear, and Marvin appreciated the professional respect from a man who understood the weight of the spotlight.

”Thanks, Tom. Thank you, Nicole,” Marvin replied, his smile easy and genuine.

With two of the industry’s heavy hitters openly showing their support in the front row, Marvin’s journey back to his assigned seat in the middle section suddenly took longer. The aisle became a gauntlet of outstretched hands and whispered congratulations. Everyone wanted a piece of the young history-maker. A few older and younger actresses, emboldened by the festive atmosphere and the open bar in the lobby, seized the opportunity to lean in and plant kisses on his cheeks as he passed.

By the time he finally navigated the maze of gowns and tuxedos and reached his seat next to the *The Sixth Sense* crew, everyone in their section grinned at him. The broadcast camera on the crane swung over to capture the triumphant return of Marvin.

Bruce pointed a finger at him, his shoulders shaking as he tried to suppress a loud laugh. ”Marvin, look at your face, kid!”

Marvin blinked, puzzled. He quickly borrowed a small mirror from Toni, who already giggled behind her hand. He opened the mirror and examined his reflection.

Overlapping, bright red and pink lipstick marks covered his pale skin.

”I knew it. I knew they held bad intentions,” Marvin declared with mock annoyance, adopting the tone of a weary aristocrat. He pulled a handkerchief from his breast pocket and began wiping the makeup from his cheeks.

The live broadcast caught the moment perfectly. The sight of the composed, historic Oscar winner frantically scrubbing lipstick off his face broke the tension in the room.

Laughter rippled through the audience, turning it into one of the most human, memorable scenes of the night.

....

...

..

.

The ceremony pressed on. Next came the award for Best Actor.

Despite the long odds, Bruce couldn’t completely hide his hope.

He sat a little straighter as the category approached, his expression calm but his jaw noticeably tense.

Years of success had made him one of Hollywood’s biggest stars, yet an Oscar remained the one prize that still eluded him.

The auditorium fell silent as Helen Hunt stepped to the microphone and opened the envelope.

For a brief moment, anticipation gripped the room.

Then she looked up.

”Roberto Benigni, *Life Is Beautiful*.”

The audience erupted.

Across the theater, Roberto Benigni immediately sprang to his feet.

The Italian filmmaker looked completely overwhelmed by the announcement.

As applause thundered through the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, he began making his way toward the stage in the most Roberto Benigni manner imaginable—climbing over seats, armrests, and rows of stunned guests instead of using the aisle.

The crowd roared with laughter and applause.

By the time he reached the stage, the entire room seemed caught up in his boundless excitement.

Bruce released a slow breath and leaned back in his chair.

Disappointment flickered across his face for only a moment before professionalism took over.

A second later, he was applauding alongside everyone else.

The race had been competitive from the beginning.

Tonight simply belonged to Roberto Benigni.

....

...

..

.

The disappointment for the Sixth Sense contingent continued as the ceremony entered its final stretch.

M. Night Shyamalan maintained a composed expression as the Academy Award for Best Director went to Steven Spielberg for Saving Private Ryan.

No one in the auditorium seemed particularly surprised.

Throughout the entire awards season, Spielberg had been regarded as the overwhelming favorite. His harrowing depiction of World War II had already secured virtually every major directing prize in Hollywood.

Even those rooting for Shyamalan rose to applaud.

A few categories later came the final prize of the night.

The one everyone remembered.

The one that defined Oscar history.

Harrison Ford stepped onto the stage to present Best Picture.

The auditorium fell silent.

Five films had survived the long awards season.

*Elizabeth**

*Saving Private Ryan*.

*The Thin Red Line*.

*Shakespeare in Love*.

And *The Sixth Sense*

Ford opened the envelope.

A moment later, he delivered the verdict.

”*Shakespeare in Love.*”

A mixture of cheers, applause, surprise, and disbelief swept through the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion.

Across the room, the Miramax tables erupted.

Actors embraced.

Producers shook hands.

Publicists nearly jumped from their seats.

Months of campaigning, screenings, interviews, advertisements, and industry events had culminated in the industry’s highest honor.

Yet as the celebration unfolded, many eyes drifted toward a single figure.

Harvey Weinstein.

The Miramax co-founder was already moving.

Before some of the filmmakers had even fully risen from their chairs, Harvey was striding toward the stage with unmistakable purpose.

The cameras found him immediately.

Of course they did.

Harvey had spent years ensuring cameras found him.

A few knowing smiles appeared around the auditorium.

Others looked noticeably less amused.

From several tables occupied by rival studios, expressions hardened.

The defeated campaigns of *Saving Private Ryan*, *The Sixth Sense*, *Elizabeth* and The *Thin Red Line* watched as Miramax’s architect claimed the spotlight once again.

By the time the winning producers reached the stage, Harvey had positioned himself near the center of the celebration.

The audience applauded politely as Harrison Ford handed over the Oscar.

More than one observer noticed that Harvey’s hand seemed to reach the statuette almost immediately.

The cameras flashed relentlessly.

For a brief moment, the image broadcast around the world was not the filmmakers.

It was Harvey Weinstein standing beneath the spotlight with an Academy Award in his hands.

Exactly where he wanted to be. Tonight he became the Oscar God in front of the world audience.

Around the auditorium, reactions varied.

Some applauded enthusiastically.

Others exchanged weary glances.

A few simply stared forward with carefully neutral expressions.

Hollywood was a town built on ambition.

Harvey’s ambition merely happened to be larger and less subtle than most.

Eventually, he stepped toward the microphone.

The applause gradually faded.

Harvey smiled broadly, visibly savoring the moment.

”This has been an extraordinary year for everyone involved with Shakespeare in Love,” he began.

The giant screens projected his face across the auditorium.

”We believed in this film from the very beginning. We believed audiences would embrace it, and we believed it represented the very best of what cinema can be.”
