Mottola’s greeting carried a complex, layered warmth. It wasn’t corporate calculation; it was rooted in countless Sunday dinners and a decades-long friendship with Marvin’s father.

Yet, running just beneath that familial affection was the sharp, persistent grievance of an apex executive who knew he had been flawlessly outmaneuvered.

”Tommy,” Marvin smiled. It was polite, but his eyes were warm. ”You remember Beyoncé.”

”Of course.” Mottola pivoted, effortlessly aiming his spotlight at her. ”Destiny’s Child is moving serious units. The new single is charting beautifully.”

”I appreciate that, Mr. Mottola,” she replied.

Her delivery was flawless. Warm enough to acknowledge the position, but guarded enough to show she didn’t need it. The psychological scaffolding Marvin had spent a year building inside her was holding strong.

Mottola snapped his attention back to Marvin. ”Four Grammys.”

”Four Grammys,” Marvin echoed, unblinking.

”Record of the Year. Song of the Year.” Mottola didn’t say it like a proud uncle; he said it like a man reading an autopsy report. He leaned in, trying to weaponize his physical size. ”A track that, given our history, should have had the Columbia stamp on the jewel case.”

”A track released perfectly within the boundaries of my contract,” Marvin countered, his tone perfectly pleasant. ”The same boundaries your legal team signed off on last October.”

”My lawyers confirmed your loophole was legally defensible,” Mottola countered, leaning in slightly, attempting to use his physical mass to dominate the airspace.

”Defensible and *right* are entirely different concepts, kid. Legalities don’t change the fact that I had to sit in a boardroom in Tokyo and lower my head to the Sony higher-ups. You are *my* signed artist. The son of my oldest friend. Do you have any idea how agonizing it is to explain to the board why my own golden boy took the crown jewel of the 1990s and walled it off in his own imprint?”

”I didn’t build the wall to keep you out, Tommy. I built it to keep myself safe,” Marvin said. His voice lacked even a fraction of an apology. ”Ownership is absolute. You still get to take credit for discovering and launching me. Be happy with the press and the bonus you got.”

Beyoncé watched the exchange, mesmerized.

For seventeen years, the industry had taught her that men like Mottola were gods. You didn’t argue; you smiled and survived. Yet here was Marvin, treating a billionaire shot-caller like an annoying middle-manager. It was intoxicating.

The psychological rewiring taking place in Beyoncé’s brain was profound.

Marvin’s total refusal to yield, his impenetrable titanium wall of self-worth, proved to her that the corporate machine was completely powerless against genuine leverage.

Knowing he had reached the dead end, Mottola changed lanes. ”The new album. Give me a date.”

”When the tracks are flawless.”

”It’s been two years, Marvin. The market is bleeding for it.”

”The new record makes the debut look like a demo,” Marvin said simply. ”You can’t rush a masterpiece.”

”You always say that.”

”And I haven’t been wrong yet.”

It was a flash of pure, untouchable arrogance.

Beyoncé felt a dark thrill tighten her chest.

Mottola sighed, rubbing his jaw. He looked at Marvin with the exhausted resignation of a man who realized he could neither control his monster nor afford to kill it. ”’Unstoppable’ just hit its fifth week at number one,” he muttered. ”And the debut is tracking double diamond.”

”I know.”

”I know you know, I briefed you last month.”

”I know because I read my own global metrics,” Marvin fired back without missing a beat. ”Your briefing was just a rerun.”

Defeated, Mottola looked at Beyoncé like she was holding a live grenade. ”Is he always this exhausting?”

”Every single day,” she laughed, the sound rich and completely unbothered.

”How do you deal with him?”

”I find it charming,” she said, her eyes sliding sideways to Marvin, heavy with quiet heat. ”Usually.”

Mottola let out a genuine, chest-deep laugh, throwing his hands up at the absurdity of it all. ”You’re either a saint, Beyoncé, or you know a trick his entire legal team missed.”

”I just know him.”

Marvin shot her a look, the ghost of a real smile tugging at his mouth.

Having officially aired his grievances, Mottola clapped Marvin heavily on the shoulder and vanished back into the sea of bodies, returning to an empire he ruled—even if he couldn’t control the boy currently conquering it.

She looped her arm through his, and they navigated the glittering chaos. They moved as a single, unshakable unit.

They hadn’t made it far before Stevie Wonder intercepted them near the bar. The legend didn’t need to see the room to read its temperature; he shifted his angle smoothly, instantly picking up on the energy radiating between Marvin and the girl at his side.

The greeting wasn’t Hollywood fluff; it was immediate, heavy, and strictly musical.

”That chord substitution in the bridge of *’Unstoppable,’*” Stevie said, adjusting his glasses. ”You knew what you were doing.”

”I did,” Marvin nodded.

”Ninety percent of producers in this room would’ve taken the easy way out and resolved in a major key,” Stevie noted, a massive grin spreading across his face. ”You went minor. Cut right against the grain. Why?”

”A major key tells the listener they’re *supposed* to feel happy,” Marvin explained smoothly. ”The minor shift bypasses the brain. It makes them bleed for it in their chest first.”

Stevie tapped his cane on the carpet once, deeply appreciative. ”Yes. Exactly that. That’s where the magic lives.”

Beyoncé stood quietly, soaking it in. It was like watching two wizards speak a dead language.

”Beyoncé Knowles,” Stevie said warmly, turning his focus to her. ”I caught that new single. *’The Boy Is Mine.’*”

”You actually listened to it?” she breathed, her regal composure slipping just enough to reveal the starstruck teenager underneath. A warm flush hit her cheeks.

”Voice like an angel, child,” Stevie praised. ”But the production behind you is playing it too safe. It’s underselling what you can actually do.”

”I know,” she sighed, nodding fiercely. ”The next record is going to be completely different. We’re taking the wheel.”

”You better,” Stevie said, his tone turning instantly protective. ”You’ve got the fire. Do not let these suits shove you into a neat little R&B box that you can’t break out of.”

She straightened up. A year ago, the thought of bucking the label would have made her nauseous. But tonight, standing in Marvin’s shadow, she didn’t fear the box. She already had the matches to burn it down.

”They won’t,” she promised.

They drifted through the rest of the room.

Marvin didn’t just introduce her to people; he surgically planted her in the minds of the industry’s elite. He didn’t do the standard Hollywood name-drop. He gave them facts.

He cornered Jimmy Jam and casually mentioned how Beyoncé’s lower-register vocal runs were pulling from techniques nobody had touched since early Chaka Khan. Jimmy’s eyes lit up, and suddenly, Beyoncé wasn’t just a pretty girl from a girl-group; she was a peer speaking his language.

She caught onto the game quickly. It was a masterclass in psychological warfare. Marvin was destroying the industry’s need for her to tap-dance for respect. He was serving it to her on a platter.

”You’re doing that on purpose,” she whispered as they broke away from Jimmy.

”Doing what?”

”You don’t just introduce people. You hand them a specific reason to care.”

”Empty introductions are for people who need business cards,” Marvin replied, his eyes scanning the crowd. ”When two people know a dangerous truth about each other, they actually talk.”

She looked down at him. ”You’ve been setting me up to win all night.”

”You deserve to win and then win some more.”

He didn’t dress the compliment up, and that’s why it hit her so hard. After two hours of relentless toasts and five glasses of juice, she leaned into his shoulder.

”I need the restroom.”

”Down the hall, past the—”

”I mapped the exits and the bathrooms ten minutes after we walked in,” she said, giving him a knowing look. ”I’ll be right back.”

”Do you want me to—”

”Marvin. I’m not a child.”

”In this room,” he observed coldly, ”half these guys don’t care about the difference.”

She held his gaze. She knew the sting of controlling men, but she had spent the last twelve months learning the difference between her father’s fear and Marvin’s protection.

”Five minutes,” she promised.

”I’ll be right here.”

She moved through the room with practiced ease, acknowledging people with brief smiles while weaving through the crowd without slowing down.

Marvin turned back to the conversation he had been in with Wyclef Jean about the mechanics of the digital transition. It was a good conversation, and he gave it the attention it deserved.

But his peripheral, supernatural awareness never turned off. He noticed that Shawn Carter’s attention had rarely strayed from Beyoncé all evening. The moment she disappeared from the crowd alone, he went after her.

He gave it exactly two minutes.

---

The hallway was a cocoon of hushed intimacy, the pounding bass from the ballroom reduced to a distant, throbbing heartbeat that matched the pulse racing in Beyoncé’s veins. Soft golden sconces cast warm, flattering light across the patterned wallpaper, but the air felt thicker the moment she stepped out of the ladies’ room, adjusting the plunging neckline of her shimmering, curve-hugging gown.

Shawn Carter was leaning against the patterned wallpaper, positioned just far enough down the hall to claim he was stretching his legs, but deliberate enough to block her direct path back to the floor. He carried the heavy, effortless cool of a man who had conquered the streets and was currently conquering the charts. At twenty-nine, Jay-Z at the commercial peak of his career, in a room full of people who knew exactly who he was.

”Beyoncé,” he said smoothly.

”Jay-Z,” she replied, keeping her voice strictly neutral.

She flashed a polite, industry-standard smile, but her internal alarms were screaming. The power dynamic was a textbook trap. Seventeen and twenty-nine. The isolated hallway. She had spent her entire adolescence learning the footwork required to escape these exact scenarios without bruising male egos.

She oriented her body toward the ballroom—the universal body language of someone who intended to move.

”Hell of a night,” he noted.

”It was.”

”You’re sounding crazy on that new record,” he said, taking a casual, steping slightly closer. ”Wherever you’re trying to take your sound next—”

”Thanks. I appreciate it coming from a fellow black artist,” she cut in, shifting her weight to walk past him.

”I mean it,” he pressed. The warmth was there, but underneath it was the distinct, entitled hum of an older shark who had caught a shiny new fish away from the school. His hand came up—an easy, habitual reach toward her arm.

”I’d love to get into the studio, talk about what you’re building—”

**”She has all the producers she needs, Shawn.”**

The voice sliced through the dim hallway like a straight razor.

Carter froze, snapping his head toward the entrance.

Marvin stood in the doorway, his silhouette cutting a dark, unnatural shape against the bright lights of the party behind him. He hadn’t made a sound.

His public, polite mask was completely gone. In its place, the raw, suffocating pressure of his Incubus nature flooded the corridor. The temperature in the hallway seemed to plummet.

He didn’t look angry at all; he projected a localized, biological terror that forced the oxygen out of the space. It was an aura designed to remind mortals exactly where they sat on the food chain.

Carter was a hardened street survivor. But the warning his brain was currently receiving bypassed his ego entirely. It was primal. *Do not move. Do not breathe.*

His hand dropped from Beyoncé’s airspace instantly. He forced his spine straight, fighting the instinct to step back.

”Meyers,” Carter said. His voice was steady, but the tension in his jaw betrayed him. ”Quiet as death, man.”

”Pretty useful skill,” Marvin purred, dangerously soft, stepping forward with predatory grace. ”Especially when a man forgets what belongs to someone else.”

He took one step forward, breaking the invisible pressure just enough to let Beyoncé slip out of the trap. She didn’t run; she just glided seamlessly to his side, She slipped her arm through his, pressing her lush, warm body against him. Her fingers traced slow circles on his bicep, feeling the coiled strength beneath the tailored suit. Even with her height advantage in heels, he dominated the space—his presence wrapping around her like a silken shadow, making her feel protected, desired, and deliciously claimed. The second she touched him, the residual panic in her chest evaporated.

Jay-Z’s gaze darted between them, the calculation swift and sour. The math in his head rapidly recalculated, realizing the game was rigged and the house was currently staring a hole through his chest.
