James Horner walked to the stage to accept the heavy gramophone for both of them. This was a highly strategic, political decision made weeks in advance with Marvin’s full, calculated agreement. The logic was flawless: Horner’s solo acceptance allowed the magnificent orchestral score to be discussed by the Academy in its own right, rather than solely through the sensationalist, media prism of the twelve-year-old boy who had contributed to it.

But Horner’s acceptance speech made the boy’s contribution undeniably explicit to the room.

”The haunting, Celtic voice of this score,” Horner said, leaning into the microphone on the Grammy stage, utilizing language almost identical to what he had spoken at the Golden Globes or Oscars—because the statement was the absolute truth, and he had no professional reason to vary it. ”Came entirely from Marvin Meyers. The sweeping melodies that permanently define this film’s emotional identity—the tin whistle motif, the delicate pan flute passages, the specific, devastating harmonic vocabulary of the score’s most affecting, tragic moments—these are his original compositions, brilliantly arranged within the massive orchestral framework we built together.”

Horner held up the golden gramophone, looking out at the silent, attentive crowd.

”I am accepting this specific award for both of us tonight, primarily because he is twelve years old, and his parents have made a sensible, logistical decision about his time on this stage this evening,” Horner smiled warmly. ”But make no mistake about the true authorship of what you are recognizing tonight. It is shared. Equally. Thank you, Marvin.”

The Grammy audience—six thousand seasoned professional musicians, producers, and powerful industry figures in the room, plus the massive global broadcast audience at home—received this declaration with the genuine, roaring warmth of people who had been obsessively listening to the *Titanic* score for one solid year, and who were currently in the rapid process of updating their understanding of exactly where that magic had come from.

The primary network camera immediately found Marvin.

He sat in his seat, his hands resting quietly in his lap. His aristocratic expression carried the quality of an entity receiving massive praise that they consciously decided not to perform a cheap reaction to. He wasn’t suppressing feeling, but he was also not displaying fake, wide-eyed humility for the cameras’ benefit. He was simply present.

Simply himself. Marvin accepting tribute.

The live performance setup mirrored his Oscar appearance—a grand piano and a single, stark white spotlight. It was a calculated choice.

Instead of competing with the grandiose pop spectacles happening elsewhere on the stage, he opted for intimacy. In the twelve months since his Academy Award performance, the minimalist approach had become a recognized signature.

He sat at the keys and played the sweeping, melancholic opening of *’My Heart Will Go On’*. The sprawling auditorium fell into a pin-drop silence.

After finishing through the ballad, he shifted the tempo. Without any announcement, he transitioned the melody, his fingers dancing across the keys to find the thumping, electropop chords of *’Unstoppable’*.

He bridged the two different songs with a complex jazz progression, largely composed and improvised in the moment. The live performance possessed a magnetic, unfiltered energy that the polished studio recordings could never capture.

The Grammy crowd reacted differently than the Academy voters had. The Oscar audience had been moved to tears, appreciating the emotion from an external distance. The Grammy audience understood the technical mechanics.

They registered the harmonic choice in the transition bridge. They noticed the restraint in his vocal run during the verse, and they felt the exact moment the second song’s heavy energy arrived without disrupting the fragile emotional residue of the first.

The standing ovation erupted before he even played the final chord. It was immediate and roaring—the industry affirming a talent it understood from the inside out.

From her seat in the second row, Beyoncé watched the performance with a focused, breathless stillness. She remembered hearing a rough version of this genius in a karaoke room on her birthday.

Now, she was watching the world bow down to receive it. She held both realities in her mind, finding the experience overwhelming.

The broadcast of the performance alone spiked the Nielsen ratings. Millions of fans sitting at home cried at the opening notes of the ballad, then surged with energy as *Unstoppable* hit, dancing in their living rooms.

Best Song Written for a Motion Picture went to *’My Heart Will Go On.’* This specific award, rigorously recognizing the song’s fundamental compositional merit rather than its commercial recording, was presented in the context of Marvin’s full authorship.

He was formally recognized for the sweeping melody, the complex arrangement architecture, and the haunting Celtic instrumental framework with his voice and lyrics that Horner subsequently incorporated into the massive score.

His acceptance speech for this fourth award was brief, incredibly warm, and specifically, generously acknowledged James Horner, James Cameron, his agent Jeff Raymond, his brilliant assistant Amy Adams, and Max Martin, whose invisible, structural contributions to his pop sensibilities were invaluable.

Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals—this specific award, technically, did not go to Marvin.

The rigid, bureaucratic category’s definition strictly required a traditional, named vocal collaboration between two distinct artists in the recording booth. The complex, layered construction of the *Titanic* score placed Marvin’s massive contributions firmly in the compositional and instrumental categories, rather than the vocal collaboration category as conventionally, legally understood by the Academy.

The Grammy rules committee apparently wrestled with this specific nomination’s construction for several weeks in closed-door sessions. The political resolution they finally produced resulted in an award going to another, more traditional nominee.

Marvin accepted this minor loss with grace, viewing it as the correct, rigid application of the category’s bureaucratic criteria, and he happily said so publicly when ambushed by reporters in the press room later.

”The rules are the rules,” Marvin smiled effortlessly, sipping a glass of water when asked about the ’snub.’ ”The initial nomination was simply the industry’s emotional expression of desperately wanting to recognize the historic collaboration I had with Mr. Horner. The final award simply went to a different, more literal interpretation of the category’s legal text. Both things can be entirely true simultaneously. I am absolutely not losing any sleep over technicality.”

Later in the broadcast, Marvin won Record of the Year. He won Song of the Year. And Best Male Pop Vocal Performance. Album of the Year went to Lauryn Hill, just as he had known. Best New Artist went to Lauryn Hill.

The backstage press room operated with rapid-fire efficiency. Over three years of navigating reporters, Marvin learned how to give them exactly what they needed without wasting a syllable. They knew what to ask; he knew what to say.

”Marvin, congratulations on winning in every category you were nominated for! The new album—when is the release date?”

”When it is ready,” he said smoothly into the cluster of microphones. ”Which is not a PR deflection. I do not release art before it is ready. When it is done, you will be the first to know.”

”Can you give us anything on the genre?”

”It will be longer than the EP,” he offered. ”A full album. The musical architecture is different from what has been released so far. Still distinctly mine, but the work of someone who has been doing this globally for two years rather than someone who just started.” He paused, a smirk touching his lips. ”Better.”

”You always say that,” a journalist from *Rolling Stone* shouted from the back.

”And it keeps being true,” Marvin shot back, drawing a wave of laughter from the press corps.

They found each other immediately after the press room obligations concluded. The chaotic geography of the awards ceremony naturally produced a quiet corridor reunion.

She stood leaning against a wall, watching him approach with four golden gramophones clutched in his hand. Her eyes held the quiet, swelling pride of someone who had been present at the beginning of the journey those statues represented.

”Record of the Year,” she noted softly.

”Yes.”

”Song of the Year.”

”Also yes.”

”Four Grammys in one night from one song,” she said, shaking her head. ”From many nominations. While Lauryn Hill swept everything else.”

”Lauryn Hill deserved everything she swept tonight,” he stated.

”You said that exact same thing to the reporters. I saw it on the monitors.”

”I meant it then, B. I mean it now.”

She looked up, searching his face. ”You’re really not even a little bit disappointed you didn’t sweep?”

”I won Record of the Year and Song of the Year,” he reminded her, stepping closer. ”For a track that I wrote. The only rational response to holding these four awards is gratitude.”

She looked at him with an expression that slowly developed over nearly two years—fond, slightly awed, and exasperated by his alien composure.

”You are so—” she started, searching for the word.

”Strange?” he offered.

”I was going to say composed,” she laughed, gently swatting his chest. ”But strange works too.”

”Both have been applied to me by the press,” he smiled.

The Sony Music after-party occupied the hotel’s largest ballroom with a specific, highly organized excess.

The open bar did staggering business. The music was loud enough to require raised voices, yet it never prevented predatory networking.

The room contained a perfect cross-section of the industry’s elite 90s configuration. It was an environment designed entirely for sharks to swim together.

Marvin hadn’t planned on showing up.

Post-Grammy galas were just the industry putting on a mask to congratulate itself, fueled by a messy cocktail of desperation, status-climbing, and hotel-room drugs and sex a lot of sex. Marvin had zero patience for performances that served no purpose.

But as their Mercedes pulled away from the Shrine Auditorium, Beyoncé had turned to him in the cavernous backseat.

”I want to go.”

”Then we go,” he had answered.

A year ago, her need to attend would have reeked of survival instinct—the suffocating anxiety that if she didn’t smile at the right label heads, her career would vanish overnight.

Tonight was different. She wasn’t walking in to beg for scraps. Anchored by the quiet gravity of the boy beside her, she wanted to step into the tank and see if the water parted.

Now, at a quarter past ten, Marvin stood dead center in the ballroom, nursing a sparkling water. His unnatural blue eyes tracked the room with lethal precision. Beyoncé stood shoulder-to-shoulder with him, sipping orange juice.

They had both declined the bar’s stronger offerings with ease.

Even here, away from the cameras, Marvin had no desire to be seen with alcohol in his hand. Most of the people in the room were drowning in hard drugs and every imaginable vice so none of them could speak out or get blacklisted from the industry.

He intended to keep his image clean.

If people were going to gossip about him, he’d rather they talk about his endless stream of girlfriends than drunken scandals, rehab stays, or drug addictions. At worst, he wanted to be remembered as a sex addict who collected beautiful women the way other people collected Pokémon cards.

Compared to the skeletons hiding in this room, that was practically wholesome.

Marvin’s age of thirteen was completely irrelevant; his aura carried the weight of a literal apex predator.

In a town where child stars were chemically altered before puberty, his absolute sobriety was a flex. Marvin might be wearing a thirteen-year-old’s face, but his presence hit the room with the crushing weight of something ancient.

”Tommy’s staring a hole through your head,” Beyoncé murmured, leaning in close.

Marvin didn’t bother to look. ”Let him stare.”

”He looks like he wants to strangle you.”

”He’s been plotting my murder since the fall of ’98,” Marvin replied smoothly. ”The *My Heart Will Go On* headache.”

”Remind me of the real story?” she asked, her voice dropping to a soft, conspiratorial purr over the music.

”Columbia thought their contract gave them a leash on everything I touched,” Marvin said, taking a slow sip. ”But the Titanic track sat right on a blind spot between my solo deal and my scoring work. His lawyers screamed that it belonged to Columbia. My imprint’s lawyers disagreed.”

He flashed a dark, fleeting smirk. ”I was right. They weren’t.”

”And he’s still bleeding over it.”

”He lost four Grammys and fifty million dollars in a span of three years,” Marvin stated deadpan. ”At this point, his anger is basically a tradition.”

Beyoncé bit the inside of her cheek to hide a sharp laugh.

Right on schedule, Tommy Mottola bulldozed his way through the crowd. He moved with the heavy, deliberate swagger of an industry titan coming to collect a debt.

Mottola’s greeting carried a complex, layered warmth. It wasn’t corporate calculation; it was rooted in countless Sunday dinners and a decades-long friendship with Marvin’s father.

Yet, running just beneath that familial affection was the sharp, persistent grievance of an apex executive who knew he had been flawlessly outmaneuvered.
