The industry whispered about his terrifying temper—the screaming matches, the physical altercations—but they happily turned a blind eye. The statues brought immense box office returns, reinvigorating VHS sales and validating his god complex.

Weinstein did whatever he wanted, whenever he wanted, wherever he wanted, and with whomever he wanted. He wielded his power, money, and influence to pressure people into generating positive press and favorable discussion for his films while encouraging negative coverage of his competitors.

When it came to the Oscars, Weinstein craved the accolades. He wanted the attention. More than anything, he wanted to be Harvey Weinstein—the kingmaker of Oscar season, the God of Oscars.

There was also a significant financial incentive. Early on, he realized that whenever a Miramax film received an Academy Award nomination, its box-office performance often received a second life. Audiences who had previously ignored a movie suddenly became interested, generating additional revenue. The effect was even greater when the film later arrived on VHS and DVD, as Oscar recognition frequently translated into stronger home-video sales.

The financial rewards were substantial, and that alone would have been enough motivation for many executives.

But in Weinstein’s case, there was another, darker aspect to his obsession with Oscar nominations and victories.

It wasn’t just that his ego was being stroked, or his company was getting these prestigious awards, or his bank balance was inflated.

According to numerous records that later emerged, Weinstein viewed his status as one of Hollywood’s most powerful producers as a tool. The influence, prestige, and credibility that came with awards success further strengthened his position within the industry, allowing him to wield even greater power over aspiring actors and actresses seeking opportunities in Hollywood.

For Harvey, an Oscar wasn’t a trophy; it was bait. He hoarded nominations and engineered Best Actress wins so he could dangle them like meat in private hotel rooms. He built his empire on a singular, predatory promise to young women, using the very awards he had bought to justify his monsters.

*Look at the careers I built,* he would tell them, invoking the names of the women who had won under his banner. *I gave the world to them. Now, what are you willing to give me?*

He hadn’t just broken the Academy. He had turned its highest honor into a hunting ground.

The Oscar campaigns were not merely about winning trophies. They also reinforced the system of influence and authority that made him one of the most feared and powerful figures in the entertainment industry.

And the most obvious truth of all was that these were merely in the public eye.

This was the monster he comfortably allowed the industry to see—the ruthless campaigns, the calculated smears, the brazen manipulation of Hollywood’s most sacred institutions. They were the ”open secrets,” the tactical cruelties that the elite willingly swallowed with a flute of complimentary champagne.

If this was the level of depravity he flaunted in the shallow light of day—if this was the corruption the world rewarded—any sane mind would shudder to fathom the hell festering behind closed doors.

Beyond the velvet ropes, in the soundproofed hotel suites and behind the deadbolts of his private executive offices, the reality was a nightmare of a completely different magnitude for those golden statuettes.

By exactly 8:30 p.m. Eastern Standard Time, the live, global broadcast of the 71st Academy Awards ceremony entered full, spectacular swing.

The beloved host of this year, Whoopi Goldberg—who currently still operated in her brilliant, universally adored comedic heyday, far, far removed from the preachy, bitter television personality she would eventually become years later on *The View*, where she would blame absolutely every societal ill on racism—stepped out onto the stage. She arrived to the sound of deafening, enthusiastic applause from her peers.

This marked her third time hosting the Oscars, and her undeniable, electric charm immediately made the tense, nervous crowd relax and laugh with her opening, rapid-fire monologue. She stepped up to the podium wearing a full, completely over-the-top, theatrical Queen Elizabeth I costume, complete with a massive powdered wig and pale makeup, a direct, hilarious visual nod to the nominated *Elizabeth* and *Shakespeare in Love* and Elizabeth.

Tonight, the Best Actress nominee Cate Blanchett, and Best Supporting Actress winner Judi Dench, will become the first pair of actresses to earn acting nominations in the same year for portraying the same character in different films.

Once the opening comedy routine concluded and the ceremony began in earnest, the atmosphere in the room noticeably grew more focused and tense. The hundreds of celebrities in the audience sat up slightly straighter in their seats, their smiles tightening, ready for the grueling marathon of awards to begin.

”Now, let’s talk about one of the biggest surprises of the year—*The Sixth Sense,*” Whoopi said, stepping forward with a grin.

”Yeah, I know. Half of y’all are still arguing about that ending.”

The audience chuckled.

”What started as a little spooky movie somehow turned into one of the biggest hits on the planet. Nobody expected it. The studios didn’t expect it. The critics didn’t expect it. And judging by some of the faces in this room tonight, a few Academy voters didn’t expect it either.”

A fresh wave of laughter rolled through the theater.

”And right in the middle of all that success is a young man sitting right over there.”

Whoopi pointed directly toward Marvin’s table. ”There he is. Marvin Meyers. Hi, baby.”

The camera immediately swung toward him, projecting his image onto screens throughout the auditorium and broadcasting it to millions of viewers around the world.

Marvin responded with an easy smile and a small wave, drawing applause from the audience.

”Now, correct me if I’m wrong,” Whoopi continued, ”but I heard Marvin was only eleven years old when he came up with the story.”

The audience murmured.

”Eleven.”

She paused dramatically.

”At eleven, I was trying to figure out what happened to my left shoe.”

The room erupted with laughter.

”Meanwhile, this kid is out here creating blockbuster movies, writing bestselling books, making hit records, and collecting Oscar nominations like they’re baseball cards.”

Even the nominees laughed at that one.

”I got projects sitting in studio offices right now that have been in development longer than Marvin’s been alive.”

That drew an even bigger laugh, particularly from the producers and executives scattered throughout the audience.

Whoopi shook her head in mock frustration.

”Honestly, it’s getting embarrassing. Some of us have been working on our careers for thirty years. Marvin shows up, does everything, and still has time left over for homework.”

More laughter followed as the camera cut briefly back to Marvin.

Then Whoopi smiled warmly.

”Marvin, sweetheart, could you slow down a little? Some of these people have been working for thirty years.”

The room erupted with laughter.

”I mean, honestly. At this rate, by the time he’s eighteen, he’ll own the Academy.”

”So, Marvin, sweetheart, this next one is for you.”

She turned back toward the stage.

”Let’s take a look.” Whoopi smiled, wrapping up her introduction...

The lengthy awards ceremony began soon enough, settling into the familiar rhythm that Hollywood had perfected over decades.

The early portion of the evening was devoted to a mixture of craft and supporting categories. Awards for Best Costume Design, Best Makeup, Best Visual Effects, Best Sound, and Best Sound Effects Editing shared the stage with speeches, musical performances, and comedy segments from the host. Each winner was greeted with polite applause, though it was clear that much of the audience was conserving its energy for the major prizes still to come.

As the hours passed, the atmosphere inside the Shrine Auditorium gradually changed.

The relaxed smiles and casual conversations that had filled the room before the broadcast slowly disappeared. Nominees began checking envelopes in presenters’ hands a little more carefully. Studio executives sat a little straighter in their seats. Publicists whispered last-minute predictions to their clients.

Everyone knew the categories that truly dominated headlines would arrive later in the evening.

Best Supporting Actor.

Best Supporting Actress.

Best Actor.

Best Actress.

Best Director.

Best Picture.

With each award presented, the room edged closer to those coveted prizes, and the tension steadily mounted beneath the glamorous façade of Hollywood celebration.

”Alright, alright, how’s everybody holding up?” Whoopi asked as she returned to the stage after the commercial break.

The audience applauded.

”I know we’ve been here a while. Some of y’all started this night with one face and you’re leaving with another.”

Laughter rippled through the auditorium.

”And let’s be honest, by this point in the show everybody’s doing the same thing.”

She glanced around the room suspiciously.

”Half of you are pretending to listen, and the other half are secretly rehearsing acceptance speeches you swear you don’t have.”

A fresh round of laughter followed.

”Oh, don’t act innocent. Every nominee in this room has practiced that walk to the stage at least three times in the mirror.”

The camera caught several embarrassed celebrities laughing.

”Now we’re getting to the good stuff.”

Whoopi’s voice rose as the audience settled back into anticipation.

”The performances. The tears. The shocked faces. The speeches that start with thirty seconds and somehow turn into three minutes.”

More laughter.

”Our next award is for Best Supporting Actress, and to present it, please welcome an Academy Award winner, an incredibly talented actor, and a man who somehow manages to make the rest of us look underdressed every year...”

She paused dramatically.

”Mr. Kevin Kline!”

The audience erupted into applause as Kevin Kline emerged from the wings and walked onto the stage.

Kevin, having shed his earlier red carpet frustration, walked confidently out from the stage wings. He dressed in a sleek, perfectly tailored black Prada tuxedo, his hair slightly tousled. He strode to the microphone amid the enthusiastic, roaring cheers of the crowd, flashing his million-dollar, movie-star smile.

He opened the golden envelope resting on the podium.

”The brilliant nominees for Best Supporting Actress this year present as...” Kevin began, his smooth, practiced voice filling the hall as the camera cut to the split-screen of the nervous nominees in the audience.

”Judi Dench, for *Shakespeare in Love*.”

”Kathy Bates, for *Primary Colors*.”

”Toni Collette, for *The Sixth Sense*.”

”Rachel Griffiths, for *Hilary and Jackie*.”

”And Lynn Redgrave, for *Gods and Monsters*.”

Sitting in the aisle seat right next to Marvin, Toni seemed nervous. Her hands clasped tightly together in her lap, her knuckles white, her breath coming in short, shallow gasps as she stared unblinking at the stage.

”Who will take home the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress?” Kevin Kline asked dramatically, pausing for the necessary beat of television tension.

He looked down at the card inside the envelope. After a three-second pause, Tom flashed his signature smile toward the Miramax section and announced loudly, ”And the winner stands as... Judi Dench, for *Shakespeare in Love*!”

The hall erupted in polite, industry-standard applause as the British actress stood up, looking genuinely shocked, to make her way to the stage.

Marvin watched the outcome with a cold, simmering detachment. She should have won.

In any other year, under any other set of circumstances, the golden statue would have been placed in her hands without a fraction of a doubt. Marvin knew this with absolute certainty.

Guided by his own influence, her performance alongside him had been nothing short of transcendent. It was a raw, visceral exhibition of talent that far eclipsed what she had achieved in the previous timeline. She had bled her soul onto the celluloid, delivering a masterpiece of acting that deserved to be immortalized.

But raw, unadulterated talent meant absolutely nothing against a rigged casino.

This was not a normal awards season. This was the year the industry bore witness to the full, unchained unleashing of the monster. Everything Harvey Weinstein had absorbed since crawling out of the independent gutters and into the gilded halls of the Hollywood elite had culminated in this exact moment.

He hadn’t just learned how to navigate the politics of the Academy; he had completely, ruthlessly mastered them. Harvey had rewritten the very algorithm of prestige, transforming the Oscars from a celebration of cinematic art into a hostile corporate takeover. He had engineered a reality where genuine artistic merit was slaughtered on the altar of his manufactured narratives, ensuring that the award didn’t go to the woman who deserved it, but to the one whose victory best served his empire.
