It was a raw, visceral exhibition of talent that far left what she had achieved in the previous timeline. She had bled her soul onto the celluloid, delivering a masterpiece of acting that deserved to be remembered.

But raw talent meant absolutely nothing against a rigged casino.

This was not a normal awards season. This was the year the industry bore witness to the full, unchained unleashing of the monster. Everything Harvey Weinstein had absorbed since crawling out of the independent gutters and into the gilded halls of the Hollywood elite had culminated in this exact moment.

He hadn’t just learned how to navigate the politics of the Academy; he had completely mastered them. Harvey had rewritten the very algorithm of prestige, transforming the Oscars from a celebration of cinematic art into a hostile corporate takeover. He had engineered a reality where genuine artistic merit was slaughtered on the altar of his manufactured narratives, ensuring that the award didn’t go to the woman who deserved it, but to the one whose victory best served his needs.

Beside Marvin, Toni’s hopeful, frozen smile immediately faltered. Her shoulders slumped infinitesimally for a brief, heartbreaking second of genuine disappointment. But the reality of live television allowed no time for grief; she knew she had to quickly regain her composure as the camera boom immediately panned back toward the losing nominees to capture their ”gracious” reactions.

”Smile, Toni. The red light is on. The camera is about to point directly at you.” Marvin whispered softly, leaning slightly toward her without moving his lips.

The quiet, firm command worked instantly. Toni quickly brightened up, pasting a wide convincing smile of pure joy and supportive excitement back onto her face, clapping enthusiastically for her rival as the lens focused on her.

In the glittering world of Hollywood everyone wore their carefully constructed masks. Tonight, like so many others before her, Toni expertly played the required part of a gracious, thrilled loser for the millions watching at home.

Inside the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, the air conditioning fought a losing battle against the heat generated by the stage lights and the packed audience. The 71st Academy Awards progressed, moving past the initial pleasantries and into the meat of the ceremony.

At this year’s Oscars, *The Sixth Sense* held seven nominations: Best Picture, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, Best Film Editing, Best Supporting Actress for Toni, Best Actor for Bruce, and Best Supporting Actor for Marvin.

Among these are the industry odds makers and gambling dens placed their bets on Best Actor and Best Original Screenplay.

Bruce Willis had delivered what many critics considered the finest performance of his career, shedding much of the action-star image that had defined him throughout the decade to portray the grieving, quietly unraveling Dr. Malcolm Crowe. Yet the competition was formidable.

Roberto Benigni arrived carrying the momentum of *Life Is Beautiful*. Tom Hanks stood as a perennial Academy favorite following his commanding performance in *Saving Private Ryan*. Ian McKellen had earned universal acclaim for Gods and Monsters, while Edward Norton’s explosive work in American History X had become one of the most talked-about performances of the year.

Bruce sat rigidly in his chair, adjusting his bow tie every few minutes as the ceremony progressed.

Marvin’s prospects in Best Original Screenplay appeared somewhat stronger. Many analysts believed the category offered Academy voters a way to recognize *The Sixth Sense* without placing a competitive acting Oscar into the hands of a thirteen-year-old performer. Even so, the category remained crowded with prestige contenders, including *Shakespeare in Love*, *The Truman Show*, and *Saving Private Ryan*.

The stage crew quickly reset the podium as the applause from the previous category faded.

A moment later, Billy Crystal emerged from the wings.

The veteran comedian’s mere presence lightened the atmosphere. A ripple of applause swept through the Shrine Auditorium, accompanied by scattered laughter from celebrities who already knew he was about to say something amusing.

Crystal adjusted the microphone and glanced around the room.

”Well, we’ve finally reached the people responsible for all the trouble.”

The audience chuckled.

”Actors get the magazine covers. Directors get the praise. Producers get the money.” He paused. ”But none of them have anything to do without a writer sitting alone in a room wondering why they chose this profession.”

Laughter spread throughout the auditorium.

Crystal leaned against the podium.

”Every film nominated tonight—every laugh, every tear, every explosion, every romance, every shocking twist—started with a blank page and somebody brave enough to fill it.”

He looked up toward the teleprompter.

”And this year, we’ve got a pretty remarkable group.”

The lights dimmed.

Above the stage, the massive screen flickered to life.

”Here are the nominees for Best Original Screenplay.”

The audience applauded as the montage began.

Marc Norman and Tom Stoppard for *Shakespeare in Love*.

The crowd responded warmly. Harvey Weinstein’s table immediately erupted into applause.

Marvin Meyers for *The Sixth Sense*.

A noticeably louder reaction followed.

Several cameras immediately cut toward Marvin’s table, capturing the thirteen-year-old nominee maintaining a calm expression while those around him applauded enthusiastically.

Even now, many in the audience still struggled to fully process the reality of it.

A teenager.

Nominated for an Academy Award for screenwriting.

Vincenzo Cerami and Roberto Benigni for *Life Is Beautiful*.

The applause remained strong as Benigni flashed his trademark smile.

Robert Rodat for *Saving Private Ryan*.

Another wave of approval swept through the room. Spielberg’s war epic had become one of the defining films of the decade.

Andrew Niccol for *The Truman Show*.

The audience applauded once more as the final nominee appeared.

Five scripts.

Five vastly different visions.

A romantic comedy set in Elizabethan England.

A supernatural psychological thriller.

A tragic Italian fable about hope amidst horror.

A brutal war drama.

And a satirical science-fiction examination of modern media.

Each had captivated audiences in its own way.

Each had earned its place among the year’s finest achievements in screenwriting.

And in a few moments, one of them would take home the Oscar.

Bruce leaned over the armrest, keeping his voice low. ”You don’t seem nervous at all. Your heart rate hasn’t changed since we sat down. How do you stay so calm?”

Marvin took a slow sip from a glass of apple juice. He set the glass back in the cup holder and turned to his co-star. ”Because I have no hope of winning here, Bruce.”

Marvin pointed a finger toward the split screen. ”Norman and Stoppard will take the stage in about ten seconds. My name will not appear inside that envelope.”

Bruce frowned, glancing at the screen before looking back at Marvin. ”Why the hell would you think that?” He shook his head. ”Your script’s tighter. Not even close, actually. Every scene’s pulling its weight. Every line’s going somewhere.”

He tapped the table. ”And that twist? Come on. People aren’t just talking about it—they’re arguing about it in restaurants, at work, in their living rooms. Half the country has gone back to theaters just to see what they missed the first time.”

A grin tugged at the corner of his mouth.

”You didn’t just make a hit. You changed the conversation. Every studio in town is gonna spend the next five years trying to copy what you did, and most of them won’t even understand why it worked. Imagine changing the way horror movies are made and you did just that..”

”It’s not about the script,” Marvin explained, keeping his eyes on the stage. ”It’s about the campaign. Harvey spent the last three months hosting private dinners for Academy members in New York and London. He sent VHS tapes to every voter’s home. He organized whisper campaigns against Spielberg’s violence. He turned an awards show into a political election.”

On stage, Billy Crystal broke the seal on the envelope. He pulled out the card.

”The Best Original Screenplay goes to Marc Norman and Tom Stoppard for *Shakespeare in Love*!”

Bruce flinched. The sudden reality of Marvin’s prediction hit him. He blinked, composed his features, and forced a wide smile. He brought his hands together to clap as the writers made their way down the aisle.

Marvin sat back, applauding with a steady, rhythmic cadence. He displayed zero disappointment. The camera panning their row found a composed teenager offering polite respect to his peers.

Marvin watched Bruce out of the corner of his eye. ’It’s a good thing you have a crooked smile, Bruce,’ Marvin thought. ’It hides the panic. No one can tell if you smile sincerely or sarcastically right now.’

Bruce kept clapping, but his mind raced. He ran the calculations. If Marvin knew the depth of Harvey’s PR push, and if Harvey’s machine proved powerful enough to beat a script grossing eight hundred million dollars, what did that mean for the Best Actor category? Did Bruce stand a chance against the momentum of the Weinstein campaigns?

The stage transitioned again. Sophia Loren stepped into the spotlight to present Best Foreign Language Film. The audience rose to their feet, offering a standing ovation to the Italian icon before she reached the microphone. ”The nominees are...” Loren said. Her voice echoed through the pavilion.

*Life Is Beautiful* (Italy), directed by Roberto Benigni.

*Central Station* (Brazil), directed by Walter Salles.

*Tango* (Argentina), directed by Carlos Saura.

*The Grandfather* (Spain), directed by José Luis Garci.

*Children of Heaven* (Iran), directed by Majid Majidi.

Loren opened the envelope, a bright smile breaking across her face. ”*Roberto!*” she shouted.

*Life is Beautiful* took the award. Roberto Benigni leapt out of his seat. Instead of walking down the aisle, he climbed over the backs of the velvet chairs, stepping over Steven Spielberg to reach the stage. The auditorium erupted in laughter and cheers.

As the applause died down and Benigni finished his energetic speech, the broadcast queued up the next category: Best Supporting Actor.

Marvin adjusted his jacket and casually glanced across the center aisle. He located the Miramax section. Harvey sat in the third row.

Harvey turned his head. Their eyes met. The studio executive raised a hand and gave Marvin a deliberate thumbs-up again.

Marvin narrowed his eyes, tracking the gesture. ’What is he communicating?’ Marvin wondered. His mind worked through the variables. ’Did this fat guy do something behind my back?’

Marvin accessed his memories of the previous timeline. In the history he knew, Harvey funneled his capital and influence entirely into Best Picture and Best Actress for *Shakespeare in Love*. The supporting categories remained secondary targets. Judi Dench won Best Supporting Actress tonight, but she held decades of goodwill and personal connections within the British voting bloc of the Academy. Harvey didn’t have to put too much effort to buy her statue; her legacy secured it.

’Did Harvey shift his strategy?’ Marvin thought. ’Did he redirect votes away from Best Actor to secure a win for me, just to keep his golden goose happy?’ It remained speculation. The timeline warped around Marvin’s presence, leaving gaps in his historical foresight.

The uncertainty hung in the air, but Marvin let it dissipate. He leaned back against the upholstery. His Incubus nature provided a buffer against the anxieties plaguing the humans around him. He felt the radiating desires of the actors in the room—the desperation for validation, the fear of fading into obscurity. Marvin required none of it.

He held time. If the Academy denied him the statue tonight, he would simply take it later.

Leonardo DiCaprio would spend the next two decades bleeding on screen, chasing this exact piece of gold until the Academy finally relented.

Marvin did not intend to beg. When he reached adulthood, he was sure that, even without leveraging his aura, his capital, or his studios to dictate the terms, they would give him that statuette, or the audience would burn them down.

He stood thirteen. The golden guy could wait. The lights inside the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion softened as the applause from the previous category faded away. A moment later, Kim Basinger stepped onto the stage.

The audience greeted her warmly. Only a year earlier, she had stood in the same spotlight accepting an Oscar for L.A. Confidential. Tonight, she returned as a presenter, elegant and composed beneath the glow of the stage lights.

She smiled as she approached the microphone.

”Acting is often described as transformation,” Basinger began. ”But the truth is that some of the most memorable performances come from the actors who make that transformation look effortless.”

The room quieted.

”Supporting actors have a unique challenge. They may have fewer scenes, fewer lines, and less screen time, but somehow they still manage to leave an unforgettable impression.”

She glanced toward the audience.

”And this year, we have five remarkable performances.”

The lights dimmed.

The giant screen above the stage flickered to life.

”The nominees for Actor in a Supporting Role are...”
