Both legendary directors sat back in their chairs. They sipped their wine under the California stars, completely humbled by the undeniable, rising tide of a new era.

---

George Lucas spent the remainder of the night at Spielberg’s estate debating film theory, pacing, and the future of digital distribution with his friend until the sun rose over the Pacific. He left the following noon. He looked exhausted but strangely energized.

As his armored SUV glided smoothly down the sun-drenched streets of Santa Monica, Lucas glanced out the tinted window. The bold, neon signage of a Tower Records store caught his eye.

He leaned forward and tapped the partition. ”Pluto, stop for a moment.”

The driver, a towering, stoic man with military precision, smoothly eased the vehicle into a temporary loading zone and brought it to a halt.

”Pluto, I need you to go inside this record store,” Lucas instructed. He pulled a crisp hundred-dollar bill from his wallet. ”Buy the music by that kid, Marvin Meyers. Steven said the album package is usually called the *Marvin Package*. Wait... buy one CD and one vinyl record... no, you know what? Make that two of each format.”

Lucas, a man obsessive about archival media, suddenly experienced a sharp sting of collector’s intrigue. After enduring the psychological weight of Marvin Meyers’s cinematic score in the theater, he deeply believed that the raw audio quality of the boy’s solo album and singles would be just as remarkable, if not more so.

A few minutes later, Pluto emerged from the sliding glass doors of the store carrying a plastic bag. It contained three vinyl records and three CDs.

Once the driver sat back behind the wheel, Lucas eagerly leaned forward. ”Open one of the *Marvin 1* CDs, Pluto. Put it directly into the car stereo right now.”

Pluto obliged. He tore the cellophane with a thumb and slid the silver disc into the dashboard player.

The music began to play.

It wasn’t the haunting, discordant horror score of *The Sixth Sense*. This was the boy’s solo debut. A rich beautiful vocal arrangement swelled through the high-end speakers. The sound instantly enveloped the cabin of the car, shutting out the noisy Los Angeles traffic entirely.

George Lucas found himself completely lost in the lush, emotional world created by the music.

Even Pluto, a hardened driver who rarely showed emotion, was visibly drawn in. His large, shaved head began swaying gently to the rhythm, though his eyes kept their focus on the road ahead.

As the second track began, George’s expression changed dramatically. At his age, and at his level of immense wealth and success, he rarely experienced surprise from art anymore. But suddenly, listening to this boy sing about the weight of the love, a dormant, dusty ember deep inside his chest and below sparked to life.

”Feel...” Lucas whispered to himself. He stared out the window as a shiver ran down his arms as he looked down at his crotch. ’Does modern music really still have this kind of profound effect?!’ Lucas wondered, completely amazed.

He knocked hard on the glass partition and startled his driver. ”Pluto.”

”Yes, Mr. Lucas?”

”Change the route immediately. We are not going back to the ranch today. Head to 113 Castellan Street.”

Pluto simply nodded. He smoothly initiated a U-turn.

That unlisted address didn’t belong to a studio, a restaurant, or any business that appeared on a map. It led to a private club hidden deep within the Hollywood Hills, a place that officially didn’t exist and was never spoken of outside the circles that frequented it.

There was no sign above the entrance. No advertisements. No website. No public records connecting the property to its true owners.

The people who came here preferred it that way. Politicians, media moguls, studio executives, old-money heirs, foreign investors, and celebrities whose faces appeared on magazine covers around the world all passed through its doors. Deals worth hundreds of millions were whispered into crystal glasses. Careers were created, destroyed, bought, and sold before dessert was served.

The club catered to every vice that money could acquire and every luxury that influence could protect. Privacy was its most valuable commodity.

Inside those walls, reputations ceased to matter. Laws became flexible. Favors became currency.

The staff never asked questions.

The security personnel were paid fortunes to forget faces.

And whatever happened beyond those doors remained buried there.

Among Hollywood’s elite, the place had no official name.

It didn’t need one.

If you were important enough to know it existed, you already knew where to find it.

And if you didn’t, no amount of money would help you discover it.

As the chaotic, triumphant Christmas holiday season ended, the world officially rang in the new year of 1999—the final, ticking countdown of just one year before the dawn of the new millennium.

Marvin had been extremely busy lately—but in a good, productive way.

First, he handled the mundane obligation of buying Christmas gifts for his family. He carefully selected highly personalized, expensive gifts for his various girlfriends across the country, ensuring his people executed the Christmas and New Year’s deliveries.

But primarily, he busied himself capitalizing on his momentum. In his quest to promote *The Sixth Sense* globally and secure even more leverage in the industry, he continued to stay highly visible and active on the press circuit. He felt genuinely happy to be occupied; his soul thrived on the chaotic energy. He knew with certainty it would lead to unprecedented financial rewards and global career dominance.

*The Sixth Sense* had just experienced an explosive opening weekend in the UK. The European audience, typically more reserved than the Americans, felt similarly deeply enthralled by the masterful plot twists and the story structure.

The opening weekend collection in the UK alone totaled a staggering £18.5 million. A nearly identical, wildly profitable trend occurred in most major territories across Europe. The film received a massive opening and exceedingly positive, viral word of mouth.

The undisputed success of the film could be attributed entirely to the cinematic genius of M. Night Shyamalan’s direction, Marvin’s script and performance, and Bruce Willis’s grounded melancholy.

Harvey Weinstein and Miramax had already started campaigning for the upcoming Oscars fully focusing on *Shakespeare In Love*.

This lobbying resulted in even larger daily media attention focused on an already runaway hit film.

Every single major news channel, entertainment media house, and freelance reporter started doing deep-dive opinion pieces on the story structure, the psychology of the plot twist, and the acting of the cast—specifically analyzing Marvin’s chilling performance.

Rabid fans already began obsessively analyzing every single frame of the plot carefully avoiding spoiling the massive twist about Bruce Willis and the subtle nuances of the performances on early internet message boards.

From what little he saw on TV during his downtime, Bruce Willis and Marvin appeared regularly on almost every major late-night talk show and morning news broadcast. They sat to talk about the film and the grueling, emotional filming experience.

Their heavy promotional moves seemed quite obvious to industry insiders. They were both going to get a staggering, historic bonus for the film. Bruce alone negotiated a 2% backend stake of the gross profits. Given the film’s trajectory, that would easily net the action star upwards of $25 million when the dust settled.

And Bruce’s subdued, emotional performance proved genuinely good enough that he could easily secure a Best Actor Oscar nomination if he played his cards right with the Academy voters. Well, that last part depended on the strength of the other actors’ performances this season. In a year with weaker overall performances, Bruce might have even won one.

But not in 1998. Not only was 1998 shaping up to be one of the greatest, most competitive years in cinematic history, overflowing with amazing performances across the board, other darker political factors worked against Bruce.

The primary reason was simple: Bruce Willis simply didn’t have a very good, warm image amongst his fellow working actors or the Academy voting bloc.

From what Marvin heard whispered by the crew on set, Bruce’s behavior had been surprisingly, refreshingly mellow during the shooting of *The Sixth Sense*. This was largely because he had been humbled by a string of recent, embarrassing failures at the Box Office. But usually, the man acted notoriously difficult, arrogant, and highly demanding to work with.

Because of Bruce’s financial stake in the box office backend, he did everything in his power to promote the film, smiling for every camera.

The financial results clearly showed.

Being relatively free from grueling promotion work at the middle of the first month of 1999 brought many quiet, lucrative things. Firstly, the quarterly royalty cheques from his books, his music catalog, and his early movie deals started piling up in the Zenith Trust accounts like snowfall.

Sitting in his luxurious hotel suite in London, Marvin quietly looked at a number on a screen. Most Ivy League-educated, with thirty grueling years working in high finance, had never seen it attached to their own name.

He sat at the desk in the five-star suite, swirling a cold glass of milk. His operational notebook lay open, though he had not yet written a single digit in it. The secure, encrypted Zenith Trust banking terminal ran on his heavy laptop. The green text of the Reuters financial wire scrolled endlessly across the bottom of the screen.

And right there, blazing on the monitor in front of him, in the clean numerical language that the terminal used for portfolio summaries, was the current valuation of his *Yahoo!* position.

He had built it over twenty-six months.

It began—he remembered the precise, rainy date with the clarity that his mind remembered all dates. This wasn’t a function of human effort, but a function of the way certain vital information simply embedded itself permanently in his consciousness. It began on October 8th, 1996. That was the day he quietly instructed Andrew Cohen to begin accumulating 31,576 shares of the tech startup at an average price of merely nineteen dollars a share.

That formed the initial equity block. The concrete foundation. The thing sitting silently beneath all the architecture of call options, rollovers, and reinvestments. Exactly like the deep bedrock beneath a skyscraper growing considerably taller than anyone standing safely at ground level could have ever anticipated in October of 1996 besides him of course.

The original shares still rested there in the vault. All 63,152 of them. He had not sold a single one in a panic.

What those shares were actually worth right now presented a different matter entirely.

*Yahoo!* had done exactly in 1997 what it loudly told anyone paying attention it was going to do: it rose two hundred and ninety-five percent from its January opening price. The stock closed 1996 at approximately seventeen dollars—battered, limping post-IPO, suffering the severe indignity of being a genuinely extraordinary, world-changing company trading at bargain-bin prices. This deeply reflected Wall Street’s lingering, arrogant uncertainty about whether the ”internet” was a real, sustainable commercial phenomenon, or just an extended technical novelty for nerds.

But by December 1997, *Yahoo!* rocketed and closed at sixty-seven dollars. The math proved simple, and the upward move was violent.

For anyone positioned correctly through leveraged call options with the discipline Marvin employed, it had been not simply profitable, but generationally wealthy.

And then, 1998 happened.

If 1997 served as the crucial year *Yahoo!* proved to the skeptics it was real, 1998 was the explosive year the entire global market collectively decided the word ”real” was not a sufficient description. ”Real” was merely the basement floor, not the ceiling.

The internet was not just a neat new distribution channel for selling books, or a slightly more efficient digital catalogue for mail orders. It was—or so the revised, panicked consensus of Wall Street decided somewhere around the third quarter of 1998. They decided this with the conviction of people who recently updated their religious beliefs and were now fully, blindly committed to the new scripture. It was an entirely new, limitless economic substrate. A digital platform on which entirely new kinds of value creation were possible, at entirely new global scales, on entirely new, lightning-fast timelines.

*Yahoo!’s* total 1998 annual return totaled an unbelievable six hundred and fifteen percent.

The stock quietly opened 1998 at sixty-seven dollars, and closed the year at approximately four hundred and eighty-one dollars—pre-split.

That happened before the two-for-one split the board executed in February 1998. The split divided the total share count in half and the individual share price in half simultaneously.

This common corporate maneuver left the underlying value unchanged. It made the nominal numbers more accessible to the dumb retail investor, who naturally found buying a four-hundred-dollar stock far more intimidating than buying a two-hundred-dollar one.

In split-adjusted terms—because Marvin’s original 31,576 shares magically doubled and became 63,152 shares after the February 1998 split—the actual closing price of *Yahoo!* on December 31st, 1998, reached approximately two hundred and forty dollars per split-adjusted share.
