”It’s a vampire film,” Marvin stated.

Jeff’s expression did not change significantly. This itself represented a disciplined kind of expression. ”A vampire film,” he repeated neutrally.

”Not the way you currently think,” Marvin corrected him smoothly.

”How exactly am I thinking?”

”You think *Interview with the Vampire*. Bram Stoker’s *Dracula*. Melodramatic, gothic romance. Anne Rice territory with frilly shirts and crying immortals.” Marvin set the water glass down with a definitive *clink*. ”It is not that. This is... the tone feels fundamentally different. Darker. More grounded and violent. The horror feels physical and real, rather than theatrical and brooding. The world possesses a strict internal logic holding up under deep examination.”

”What’s the period setting?” Jeff asked, his pen hovering.

”The late 1800s. 1895, specifically. The primary setting acts as the foggy, cobblestone streets of London, though the story naturally moves across Europe. The central, driving conceit of the narrative involves war— but that wider mythology serves as a later project of world lore.” He paused, his eyes gleaming. ”The title of this first entry remains *Let the Right One In*.”

Jeff turned the title over in his mind—weighing the syllables, the marketing hook. ”That offers unique title. It holds mystery.”

”It will be a low-budget, independent film,” Marvin continued. ”Five million dollars at the ceiling. Probably closer to four million. I fund the entire production out of my own pocket— no studio involvement. Principal photography begins in November.”

”This coming November,” Jeff clarified.

”Yes.”

Jeff picked up his own water glass. He drank it. He set it down carefully. ”Marvin. It currently sits at January.”

”I remain aware of the calendar, Jeff.”

”That leaves only ten months away.”

”Which feels entirely sufficient. Possibly even generous, depending on exactly how efficiently you run the casting process.” Marvin looked directly at Jeff with a piercing directness. It always made the veteran agent feel, slightly irrationally, he underwent evaluation for his job, rather than the other way around.

”The script already exists in my head in an essentially complete form,” Marvin explained, his tone unwavering. ”The grim production design shines crystal clear to me. The period detail—the tight corsets, the heavy wool coats, the environments, the physical, grimy world of 1895 London—I hold specific and detailed requirements for all of it. What I lack yet are two vital things: the right visionary director, and the second lead actress.”

”Second lead actress,” Jeff repeated, writing it down. ”Tell me exactly what you seek.”

”The character acts as one of the centerpieces of the entire lore,” Marvin said, leaning forward.

”Not just this single film—the lore as a whole. This first 1895 film merely introduces the world to the audience. At least seven more blockbuster stories deeply connect to it in my head, probably nine, spread across different, modern time periods leading up to the present day. She appears as a vital force in nearly all of them. In at least four of the direct sequels, she will stand as the solo lead.”

Jeff slowly set down his silver pen. ”Marvin. You talk about building a franchise.”

”I talk about building a *universe*, Jeff,” Marvin corrected him gently. ”A franchise acts simply as a lazy series of films repeatedly beating a successful formula to death until the audience gets bored. A *universe* acts as a massive narrative architecture large enough that individual, standalone films can explore different corners of the lore without requiring each other to be fully understood. What I hold in mind feels closer to Frank Herbert’s *Dune* or the sprawling *Warhammer* lore—a massive, shared world with strict internal consistency. Each film both stands entirely alone as a great movie, and contributes to a much larger, epic mythology.”

Jeff looked at him for a long moment. He processed the ambition of a thirteen-year-old boy. ”Doesn’t that structure feel somewhat similar to how comic books operate?”

”Yes, in some very specific ways,” Marvin agreed. His eyes flashed with the knowledge of the future MCU juggernaut he fully intended to preempt, dominate and make much greater.

A quality in the way Marvin said it made Jeff smartly decide not to pursue that particular thread just yet. He returned to the actionable problem: the actress.

”The character,” Jeff redirected. ”Tell me specifically what she needs to be.”

”Her name in this first film, and the subsequent modern era, is Selene,” Marvin said. ”She operates as a Death Dealer—the militaristic term the vampire clans use for its elite, lethal hunters. The ones trained and equipped to track down and eliminate anyone they see as a threat to the coven. She has performed this job for over fifty years. She possesses discipline, trained in both hand-to-hand combat and tactical intelligence.

She holds a rigid code of loyalty—to her clan, to her maker—that will face severe tests and eventually break across the course of the films. In the sequels, she will lead the narrative in search of my character in ways forcing her to doubt everything she believes about the conflict she’s dedicated her immortal existence to.”

”So, she’s not a traditional hero, but she’s not a villain either,” Jeff mused, intrigued.

”She is, and she isn’t, depending on which side of the war you watch from,” Marvin explained. ”She performs terrible things in service of a cause she genuinely believes in. The overarching film complicates whether that cause actually deserves her blind belief.”

Marvin paused, tapping the glass table. ”The visual conception of her feels just as vitally important as the psychological one. The 1895 setting dictates strict period costume—tight, restrictive corsets, heavy Victorian velvet dresses. And in the later, modern periods, her aesthetic stands distinct. Sleek, dark leather body armor proving functional and sexy. She fights like an immortal who held two solid centuries to refine her technique into lethal efficiency. Which dictates the action choreography needs to look nothing like the flashy, wire-fu Hollywood martial arts currently in style. It needs to look like something using two hundred years of practice removing everything unnecessary. So, the actress has to look attractive, elegant, and believably lethal in both the restrictive corsets of the 1800s and the skin-tight dark leather of the future.”

Jeff sat quiet for a long moment. He performed the action Marvin watched him do many times in their working relationship. He ran the vivid description against his mental database of everyone he knew, or knew of, in the global industry. He rapidly cross-referenced the physical and dramatic requirements against the supply of talent.

”Age requirement?” Jeff asked.

”Under thirty. Preferably late twenties to early thirties,” Marvin specified. ”Old enough she inherently possesses the grounded quality of younger, early-twenties actresses sometimes simply cannot fully inhabit—the undeniable sense this person holds actual weight and history. But she must feel young enough she can convincingly carry a physical action role across what will, if the property performs as I intend, become a decade-long franchise commitment. Old enough to feel like she actually lived through centuries of bloodshed without aging, and still looks—for lack of a better, professional word—incredibly sexy and magnetic.”

”High physical action,” Jeff repeated, underlining the word. ”You mean real, punishing action. Not stunt doubles and suggested, shaky-cam action.”

”Real action,” Marvin confirmed coldly. ”She needs to possess the athleticism to train for the fight choreography in a way making the movement look authentic on screen. The camera framing will stay wide and closed. The editing will not obscure a weak performance with chaotic, quick cuts. I want the action clearly visible and grounded in a way most lazy Hollywood action films currently aren’t.”

Marvin leaned back. ”She also needs to carry the dramatic, emotional scenes with equal weight, thus she must hold a significant range as an actress. The action and the emotional character work do not act as separate registers in this script—they function as the exact same performance expressed in different physical modes. A beautiful actress who kicks high but cannot deliver a monologue without sounding foolish fails to fit my search.”

Jeff thought. Marvin saw his agent thinking—the slight narrowing of his eyes indicating a query to the mental database.

”The contract,” Marvin said softly, dropping the hammer.

Jeff looked up. He sensed the trap.

”Seven to nine films,” Marvin stated. ”Over whatever extended timeline the production schedule ultimately requires. I won’t ask her to strictly commit to a number of calendar years. The gap between productions will depend on box office performance and script development time. But the character commitment needs to remain ironclad for the full property. She needs to understand accepting this role means accepting this character as a long-term, defining professional anchor for her life, not just a single, fun summer project.”

Jeff set the silver pen down on the glass table. ”Marvin. Listen to your words. You ask a talented actress—who doesn’t yet know what this weird universe represents, who hasn’t even read a finished script, who holds zero concrete evidence this bizarre vampire property will actually perform commercially—to legally commit her life to seven to nine films.”

”Yes.”

”That poses an unusual task in this town.”

”It presents an unusual lore,” Marvin countered. He met Jeff’s eyes with an attention making the meeting of their gazes feel more deliberate and powerful than a casual glance.

”The actress taking this role will become, across the course of that contract, one of the most recognizable, iconic, and highly paid action leads in the history of American cinema,” Marvin promised. His words laced with the gravity of prophecy. ”The first film will beautifully establish the dark world. The second will explore its dynamic. The sequels will build a rabid, cult-like global audience. By the third film, it will stand as the kind of defining leading role most A-list leading ladies die never achieving.”

He paused. He let the vision sink in. ”I need the right person to fully understand exactly what they sign before they sign it, rather than discovering they struck gold afterward and trying to renegotiate.”

Jeff looked at him for a long moment. The weight of the boy’s conviction completely pinned him down.

”You say insane things like that,” Jeff finally said, exhaling slowly, ”and then they turn out to be true. Which remains undeniably the most disorienting experience I have ever had in my life.”

”I will take that as a high compliment.”

”I genuinely meant it as a complaint,” Jeff grumbled. He picked up his water glass again to soothe his dry throat. ”All right. Fine. What else do you need from me on this project? Beyond the lead actress.”

”The director,” Marvin said. He seamlessly shifted gears. ”That stands as the second critical, foundational piece. As I said, the studio stays uninvolved in the initial funding. I am thankfully not constrained by any studio’s boring, preferred director list. I need someone hungry. Someone holding sufficient technical competence to execute a lush, period action film on a four-to-five million dollar budget—which requires a kind of resourcefulness. And someone holding enough artistic vision to understand the gothic horror and the kinetic action don’t function as separate genre boxes, but vital aspects of a coherent whole.”

”Severe budget constraints immediately rule out your obvious, first-tier Hollywood action directors,” Jeff noted. He shifted, slightly, back into the professional mode Marvin always found useful. ”And period horror poses a very difficult competence. Not many directors perform it well without it looking like a cheap Halloween costume party.”

”I don’t seek someone who performed it successfully before,” Marvin clarified. ”Past experience in the genre holds less importance to me than the quality of their visual thinking. And their proven ability to successfully manage a complex, stressful production with limited resources. I want someone demonstrating high craft in adjacent territory. Independent film, elevated genre work, strong character work not relying on a bloated CGI budget to compensate for a severe lack of directorial intelligence.”

”What marks your appetite for international talent?” Jeff asked. He flipped to a fresh page in his notebook.

Marvin looked at him. ”Open. The film sets in 1895 London. A very strong argument exists for hiring a director understanding the European visual tradition and gothic architecture in a way American directors, trained primarily on sunny California cinema, simply don’t.”

Jeff tapped his index finger on the glass table once—a nervous habit, a deep-thinking gesture. ”A talented Danish director makes waves. Nikolaj Arcel. He completed strong, dark work in Scandinavia, but he hasn’t successfully broken into American, English-language productions yet. His visual sensibility looks interesting. Gritty.”

”I know his foreign work. He merits a conversation,” Marvin approved.

”A British director named Paul W.S. Anderson also exists,” Jeff suggested. His eyes scanned his mental rolodex. ”He shot a low-budget British film last year showing real genre competence. He holds exceptionally good instincts for physical space, claustrophobia, and action geography.”

”Put him near the top of the list,” Marvin instructed. He already knew the massive, lucrative *Resident Evil* franchise Anderson now stood incapable of burning in this world’s future.
