The interviewer laughed, completely charmed by the chemistry between the two teenagers while thinking of wild lines for tomorrow’s headlines. ”Marvin, you have four nominations tonight. *’My Heart Will Go On’* is certified Diamond, *’Unstoppable’* spent five weeks at number one... how are you feeling walking into this room tonight?”

”I am grateful for the work, and the reception it has received,” Marvin said, turning his gaze to the camera. ”And I am curious about how the evening will unfold. Both things simultaneously.”

”Do you have any predictions for your categories?”

”I have learned never to predict my own categories,” he said effortlessly. ”It is unsound, and it makes losing more complicated if you happen to be wrong.”

”He literally said that exact same thing last year at the Grammys,” Beyoncé chimed in, grinning at the reporter.

”Because it remains true every single year,” Marvin shot back, his eyes dancing with amusement.

”Beyoncé,” the interviewer pivoted, sensing the rising star’s momentum. ”Your single *’The Boy is Mine’* reached the top 7 on the Billboard 200! The fans are dying to know... was the inspiration for that song about Marvin?”

Beyoncé let out a bright, melodic laugh, completely unbothered by the directness of the question. Marvin swung his gaze to her, raising an eyebrow, fully inviting her to answer.

”Well, it’s a powerful song about claiming what belongs to you,” Beyoncé answered playfully, her eyes flashing as she looked at the interviewer, perfectly toeing the line of PR mystery. ”Marvin was brilliant enough to gift of God, and we brought the fire to it. Whether it’s about him or not... well, a girl has to keep some secrets, right?”

”Fair enough!” the interviewer laughed. ”And with *’No, No, No’* charting strong, Destiny’s Child is building serious momentum. What is next for the group?”

She lit up with the radiant quality she always possessed when the conversation shifted purely to the music—the thing genuinely hers.

”We are working on the new album,” she said, her voice brimming with passion. ”The direction is different from the debut. It’s more of what we actually are *now*, versus what we were when we first started out. We’ve been locked in the studio and it’s—” she paused, finding the exact right word. ”It’s exactly what I’ve been hearing in my head for years. Finally.”

Marvin watched her profile while she spoke. The animated, brilliant way she talked about the actual architecture of music was one of the things he noticed and loved earliest about her.

”You’re very close,” Marvin murmured to her, leaning in as the interviewer finally thanked them and they continued their slow walk down the screaming carpet.

”We are getting there,” she agreed, leaning her head briefly against his shoulder. ”The production sessions this week were... well, they were different. Better. Do you remember that thing you said to me once on the phone? About how a truly great song has to already exist in the ether before you can find it and pull it down?”

”Yes. I remember.”

”I finally found some of them this week, Marvin,” she said, her brown eyes shining with unshed, proud tears. ”The ones that were already there waiting for me.”

Marvin smiled, a genuine, overwhelmingly proud smile. ”I never doubted it for a second, B.”

They spent the rest of the carpet laughing together talking to the microphones of different tabloids, leaning into inside jokes and whispering to each other, ignoring some of the frantic reporters screaming their names.

The paparazzi kept furiously clicking their cameras, already mentally drafting massive, bold headlines for tomorrow’s papers about the *Wonder Boy who had completely stolen the heart of the rising Pop Diva.* *Marvin Meyers & Beyoncé: Music’s Most Electrifying New Power Pair?* *The Wonder Boy of Hollywood is into Chocolate?* *A Look, A Laugh, A Spark—Is This the Beginning of Something Bigger?* *From Charts to Chemistry: Marvin and Beyoncé Set the Red Carpet on Fire!*

*Hollywood’s Wonder Boy Falls for Destiny’s Child’s Golden Girl?* *The Boy Genius and the Rising Diva: Friendship, Crush, or Something More?* *Too Young for Love? The Red Carpet Thinks Otherwise.* *Forget the Grammys—Marvin and Beyoncé Just Became the Story of the Night!* *Music’s New Royal Couple—or Just the Grammys’ Biggest PR?*

The cameras hunted them, capturing every shared glance, every quiet laugh, already spinning a story the world would wake up to by morning.

It was the exact same, undeniable, magnetic phenomenon that had occurred on the red carpet of *The Horse Whisperer* premiere with Scarlett.

---

Shawn Carter stood three spots down the red carpet, nursing a bottle of water, watching the cameras flash.

He was riding a high that only came from conquering a city. *Vol. 2... Hard Knock Life* had dropped four months ago, and it had cemented him. He wasn’t just a rapper from Brooklyn anymore; he was becoming the center of gravity in hip-hop. He moved through these industry events with the quiet confidence of a man who knew he owned the room, evaluating the talent, the executives, and the women.

And he had been keeping a very close eye on Beyoncé Knowles.

It wasn’t just the music, though the music was the biggest hook. *The Boy Is Mine* had hit number seven on the Hot 100. That alone changed conversations in boardrooms. But Shawn watched the music videos. He watched the interviews. He told people in his circle that she was the one of them.

He had a vision of how things were going to play out. Tonight was supposed to be the night he made the introduction, sliding into her orbit the way a veteran player does, establishing a connection that would blur the lines between business and something deeper.

He had not anticipated the reality of how she would arrive.

She walked down the carpet, looking like a queen, but she held Marvin Meyers’ arm. And she wasn’t just holding it for the photographers. She stuck to his side, her body angled toward his, her smile softer and more genuine when she looked at him compared to when she faced the lenses.

A sharp, hot spike of irritation flared in Shawn’s chest. Ego was a hard thing to quiet. He was a grown man, a mogul in the making, and one of the girls he had marked out for himself was looking at a boy like he hung the moon.

Shawn had been a hustler long before he picked up a microphone. He survived the streets by reading people, by knowing who was faking it and who was real. He had been in enough plastic industry parties to easily distinguish between a studio-mandated PR stunt and the real thing.

What he saw right now was the real thing. It was in the way her thumb stroked the fabric of Marvin’s jacket. It was in the way they whispered to each other, completely ignoring the reporters screaming their names. She was walking away. The door was closing in before Shawn even got the chance to knock.

The anger simmered, tight and uncomfortable. He took a slow breath, ready to dismiss Marvin as just another pampered Hollywood kid who got lucky with a couple of hit songs and a movie. Shawn prepared to look right through the boy.

Then, Marvin turned his head.

Across the noise and the flashing lights, Marvin’s eyes found Shawn in the crowd.

The breath caught in Shawn’s throat. The irritation vanished, replaced instantly by a cold instinct that had kept him alive on the streets of Marcy Projects. The hair on the back of his neck stood up.

Photographs and television broadcasts conveyed the kid’s handsome face, but they failed to capture the weight of his actual presence. The aura, operating just below the threshold of human perception, washed over Shawn. It didn’t feel like looking at a teenager. It felt like making eye contact with an apex predator.

Shawn’s posture stiffened. The streets taught you to always know who was the biggest threat in the room. His instincts screamed that the boy in the tuxedo was a leviathan. There was an age in those eyes, that the available categories of ’child star’ or ’pop singer’ didn’t account for.

Marvin held Shawn’s gaze for a fleeting second. Then the boy turned his attention back to Beyoncé, his face softening into a smile for her alone.

Shawn took another sip from his water bottle, forcing his shoulders to relax.

’The kid isn’t just a pop star,’ Shawn noted silently, his mind racing to recalibrate his understanding of the industry.

The chaotic red carpet was the wrong place to make an introduction, and tonight was clearly the wrong moment to attempt to network with Destiny’s Child.

He capped his water bottle. He would not approach them here. But he watched them walk away, filing the interaction away in his mental vault. He had the cold patience of a businessman who understood that the game was long, and information always became relevant on its own timeline.

Inside the Shrine Auditorium, the air hummed differently than the Oscars or the Golden Globes. The music industry’s premier gathering lacked the stiff, manufactured posture of Hollywood’s acting elite.

The room smelled of expensive cologne, spilled champagne, and ozone from the stage pyrotechnics. Here, the enthusiasm for the live performances carried a raw, unpolished edge. The audience consisted of peers evaluating audio craft, breaking down vocal runs and production choices in real time.

Beyoncé sat beside him in the second row. Both had navigated her management team for weeks to secure the arrangement. The rest of Destiny’s Child sat in the same section, but two rows ahead. That separation served as Kelly, LeToya, and LaTavia’s icy reaction to Beyoncé arriving at the ceremony with a companion who eclipsed their carefully curated group dynamic.

Wyclef Jean found Marvin during one of the long commercial breaks between presentations. These interludes served as the Grammys’ version of the hushed corridor meetings defining the Oscars.

”Thirteen years old,” Wyclef said, shaking Marvin’s hand. His grip was firm, offering the genuine warmth of a musician closely tracking the boy’s output.

”Yes,” Marvin replied.

”The *Miseducation* album,” Wyclef asked, leaning in to be heard over the noise of the crowd returning to their seats. ”Have you listened to it?”

”Several times.”

”And your assessment?”

”It is the defining piece of music released in the last twelve months,” Marvin stated. His tone carried the calm certainty he reserved for honest musical evaluations. ”Lauryn Hill is going to win everything tonight. Correctly.”

Wyclef looked at him, his brow furrowed. ”You’re not worried about losing your categories to her?”

”No,” Marvin said, his eyes steady. ”My work is my work. Her work is hers. The Grammy voters are making a cultural judgment about which narrative matters more for this calendar year. If they decide hers does—and I guarantee you they will—that is the right decision for the culture.”

Wyclef shook his head slowly. ”You keep saying things like that. Things other nominees refuse to say out loud.”

”Other nominees are managing their public image,” Marvin said. ”I am stating what I think.”

”Alright then. What do you think about the music industry right now?” Wyclef challenged, crossing his arms. His Haitian roots, American commercial success, and creative intelligence gave him a unique, cynical perspective on the label system. ”The whole picture.”

”I think the industry is standing in the middle of its final golden period before the foundation cracks,” Marvin said, lowering his voice so only Wyclef could hear. ”The digital shift is coming. Within five to fifteen years, the way music is distributed and consumed by the public will look nothing like what it is today.”

He paused, letting the statement hang in the air between them. ”The people who own the digital infrastructure for that shift—the pipelines, not just the master recordings—that is where the true power goes.”

”You’re thinking of that infrastructure right now,” Wyclef said. It was an observation, not a question.

”Maybe among other things,” Marvin allowed a fleeting smile.

Wyclef studied the boy. He wore the calculating expression of a man filing crucial information for later use.

”I will call your office next week,” Wyclef said.

”Amy manages my schedule,” Marvin replied. ”She will find you a time.”

The very first award of the evening carrying his name arrived relatively early in the broadcast—Best Score Soundtrack Album, alongside James Horner, for the unstoppable *Titanic* score.

James Horner walked to the stage to accept the heavy gramophone for both of them. This was a highly strategic, political decision made weeks in advance with Marvin’s full, calculated agreement. The logic was flawless: Horner’s solo acceptance allowed the magnificent orchestral score to be discussed by the Academy in its own right, rather than solely through the sensationalist, media prism of the twelve-year-old boy who had contributed to it.
