The second she touched him, the residual panic in her chest evaporated.

Jay-Z’s gaze darted between them, the calculation swift and sour. The math in his head rapidly recalculated, realizing the game was rigged and the house was currently staring a hole through his chest.

”Good work tonight,” Carter said, addressing the wall between them, eager to break the gravity.

”Thanks,” Marvin said softly. ”Party’s that way, Shawn.”

A brutal, suffocating pause stretched between them.

”Nothing for you out here in the dark,” Marvin added. ”And I’m sure Def Jam wouldn’t love the optics of an older guy loitering outside the ladies’ room.”

Carter held Marvin’s gaze for one second longer—the universal sign of a man acknowledging a checkmate. He gave a single, tight nod and walked briskly back toward the noise of the ballroom.

Marvin didn’t blink until the hallway was completely empty.

Beyoncé’s grip on his arm tightened. She looked at him, completely unbothered by the fact that he was technically inches shorter than her. The height was an illusion. The shadow he cast was a mile wide.

Beyoncé turned fully into Marvin, her grip tightening as she gazed down at him with parted lips and darkening eyes. ”How did you know I needed saving, my love?” she whispered, voice husky and intimate.

”I know every beat of you,” he murmured, sliding both hands to her waist, thumbs stroking the silky fabric over her hips in slow, possessive circles. ”How long you linger at the mirror... how long it takes for sharks to circle. I’d follow you through hell itself, B.”

”And followed me.” Her voice dropped, teasing, warm. She pressed closer, the curve of her body brushing his in the quiet dark. ”My sexy, territorial shadow.”

She leaned down and pressed a soft, lingering kiss to his lips, then another, slower and sweeter.

”Always.” His hand slid to her waist, fingers splaying possessively over the silky fabric of her gown. Not grabbing—claiming. ”There was never another ending to that scene.”

She studied the cold, lethal stillness in his face. It was a side of him she rarely saw—not the warm lover, not the sharp businessman, but something darker. Something violently territorial.

”You were so...” She searched for the word. ”Absolute. Like you knew exactly how that was going to end before you even opened your mouth.” She shivered, pressing closer until the generous curves of her body molded against his smaller but infinitely more commanding frame.

”There wasn’t an alternate ending.”

””It’s terrifying, honestly,” she murmured, leaning closer. ”When you stop holding yourself back, I remember why girls are drawn to you. How dangerous you can actually be with just those beautiful eyes of yours. Those eyes turned lethal. God, Marvin... when you unleash that side, it terrifies me in the best way. It makes my heart pound, my skin flush, my thoughts drift to filthy, worshipful places. Just looking at you right now has me aching.”

His hands slid lower, cupping the flare of her hips and pulling her flush, their bodies fitting like they were carved for each other. The ice in his eyes melted into molten sapphire hunger. ”Does my darkness scare you, B?”

”Scare me?” She let out a soft, throaty laugh that vibrated against his chest, then leaned down, brushing her full lips teasingly along his jaw, her breath warm and sweet. The exhaustion, the vultures circling every corner of the industry, the constant need to guard herself—it all seemed to melt away whenever he was near. ”It’s exactly what I need. Every time you’re like this, I remember why I fell so hard for you. You make me feel safe, wanted, and completely helpless at the same time. It’s honestly unfair. It makes me weak in the knees. It makes me so wet and wanting I can barely think straight. One smile, one look, and suddenly I’m reminded just how hopelessly addicted I am to you.”

His fingers traced slow, teasing circles at the small of her back, pulling her flush against him. The hallway felt smaller, hotter. ”Occupational hazard of loving me, your favorite bastard.”

Beyoncé laughed softly against his mouth, the sound full of joy and relief and she leaned down, pressing a fierce, lingering kiss to his lips—a quiet offering to the monster standing guard in the dark.

He tilted his head up, capturing her mouth in a deep, lingering kiss that started tender and quickly blazed hotter. Tongues met in slow, sensual strokes, tasting champagne and desire. Her hands cradled his face, thumbs stroking his cheeks as she poured every ounce of relief, passion, and wild romance into it. When they broke apart, she breathing raggedly, he pressed open-mouthed kisses along the elegant column of her neck, nipping gently at her pulse point until she sighed his name like a prayer.

”You’re mine,” he whispered against her skin, voice rough with love and lust. ”My queen, my fire, my peace. No one touches what’s mine.”

”I love you for it,” she breathed, arching into his touch, her fingers threading through his hair. ”Every protective, possessive, romantic inch of you. You turn me on like no one else—mind, body, and soul. Let me actually fix my lipstick now, you beautiful devil... then take me back out there my white knight with the filthy mind. Dance with me slow and nasty, hands everywhere, reminding me I’m yours in front of the whole world.”

He gave her hips one last loving squeeze, eyes sparkling with wicked promise. ”Hurry back to me, beautiful. I’ve got plans for later that involve a lot less clothing and a lot more worship.”

She slipped into the restroom for a moment, emerging with refreshed gloss and a radiant, just-kissed glow.

Minutes later, they stepped back into the blinding lights and the deafening bass.

They stepped back into the glittering ballroom together—his hand firm and warm at the small of her back, thumb tracing teasing patterns that kept sparks dancing across her skin. Beyoncé leaned into him, pressing a soft kiss to his temple, her body language screaming intimate possession.

Wyclef Jean spotted them and raised his glass with a knowing smirk. ”Y’all disappeared for a minute. Long hallway?”

”Very long,” Marvin replied smoothly, voice laced with private heat. ”Worth every second.”

Beyoncé laughed softly, rich and melodic, tucking her face against his shoulder as they moved toward the dance floor. The music swelled around them—sensual, driving—but their world narrowed to stolen touches, heated glances, and the bond between them.

Later, when the lights dimmed and the after-hours began, he would pull her close in private empty places, kissing every inch of her like the treasure she was, their bodies moving together in a rhythm far more love and passionate than any beat in the room. For now, they danced under the lights—romantic, sexy.

---

The Maybach glided silently through the cool February air, carrying them away from the blinding camera flashes and the chaotic thrum of the Los Angeles night.

Inside the cavernous, leather-scented cabin of the Maybach, the entire world had quietly shrunk down to just the two of them.

Beyoncé wasn’t sitting beside him. She was curled fully in his lap, her long legs draped sideways across the plush seat, the shimmering silver fabric of her gown pooling like liquid starlight over his dark trousers. Her arms were looped loosely around his neck, her cheek resting perfectly in the crook of his shoulder as if she had been made to fit there.

Marvin held her with effortless strength and infinite tenderness, his arms wrapped securely around her waist, one hand idly tracing slow, mesmerizing patterns against the bare skin of her back where the gown dipped low.

They remained wrapped around each other in comfortable silence, simply savoring the rare, precious peace of being together after so many months apart. No cameras, no expectations, no performances — just them.

Beyoncé let out a soft, contented sigh, nuzzling closer into his neck. ”I still can’t believe you’re really here,” she whispered, her voice warm and full of wonder. ”Sometimes on those late-night calls, I’d close my eyes and try to imagine this exact feeling... your arms around me, your heartbeat against mine. But the real thing is so much better.”

Marvin smiled, pressing a gentle kiss to the top of her head, breathing in the sweet scent of her hair. ”I counted every single day,” he murmured, his voice low and sincere. ”Six months felt like six years. But holding you right now... it makes every second of waiting worth it.”

She lifted her head just enough to look at him, their faces inches apart. Her warm brown eyes shimmered with emotion as she studied his features — the sharp line of his jaw, the depth in his nebula-blue eyes, the quiet strength that always seemed to surround him. One of her hands moved up to gently cup his cheek, her thumb brushing tenderly across his skin.

”The Christmas letter,” she murmured softly, her breath warm against his jaw.

”Hmm?” Marvin hummed, his lips pressing a soft, lingering kiss to her temple.

”The three pages you sent,” she clarified, her fingers lifting to play gently with the hair at the nape of his neck. ”I read it, Marvin. Almost every single night before I go to sleep.”

”I know,” he whispered, his grip on her waist tightening just a fraction, pulling her closer.

She pulled back just enough to look down into his eyes, illuminated only by the passing streetlights bleeding through the tinted glass. ”How could you possibly know that?”

”Because,” he said, his unnatural blue eyes holding a galaxy of devotion, ”if you had poured your soul onto three pages for me, I would have memorized every single word.”

Her heart performed a sudden flutter against her ribs. She melted back against his chest helpless against the depth of his affection.

”What you wrote about the new album,” she whispered, her voice thick with emotion. ”You said it was going to be the definitive record. The one that finally makes the world stop and realize exactly what I can do. You wrote that in December. And now... I’m standing in the vocal booth, and it’s happening. Just like you promised. It’s like you saw the future.”

”I didn’t need to see the future, beautiful. I just knew the voice,” Marvin replied, his tone laced with certainty. He shifted slightly, sliding his hand up to cup her cheek, his thumb brushing over her cheekbone. ”Your voice was always destined to conquer the world, B. It was just waiting for the right moment to strike.”

*”The Boy Is Mine,”* she said, leaning into his palm with a soft, grateful smile. ”The song you gave me.”

”It’s *your* song,” he corrected fiercely. ”I just handed you the weapon.”

”Number seven on the charts,” she noted, a spark of fierce pride in her eyes. ”Second week out. And it hasn’t stopped climbing.” The smile faltered slightly, a complicated shadow passing over her features as she rested her forehead against his. ”My dad informs me, every week with the updated numbers.”

Marvin’s hand paused on her back. The temperature in the car didn’t drop, but the sudden, sharp focus in his aura was palpable. ”Speaking of Mathew... how does he feel about tonight?”

Beyoncé let out a long sigh, her shoulders slumping. Dealing with her father’s suffocating grip on her career—and his terror of her independence—was an exhausting reality.

”He definitely saw the red carpet broadcast,” she mumbled, tracing the lapel of his jacket.

”I wanted him to,” Marvin stated calmly. ”I held your hand for the entire world to see. You’re mine, B. I’m not hiding you.”

”I know,” she breathed, shivering slightly at the raw possessiveness in his velvet voice. ”He noticed.”

”And?”

”He hasn’t said anything yet,” she admitted, looking up at him with wide, worried eyes.

”Which is worse. When Mathew Knowles is quiet, he’s planning a war.”

Marvin was silent for a moment. His mind processed the chessboard with terrifying speed: Mathew Knowles was fiercely protective of his daughter and fiercely territorial of his most valuable commercial asset. Now, he was watching his daughter walk hand-in-hand with a thirteen-year-old boy who casually wielded more industry power and lethal confidence than entire record labels.

”He’s going to want a meeting,” Marvin said, stating a simple fact.

”Probably,” she winced. The thought of the two most dominant, iron-willed men in her life colliding in a boardroom made her stomach twist.

”Good,” Marvin murmured. His hand resumed its slow, hypnotic caress down her spine, deliberately soothing her frayed nerves. ”When he asks, set it up. Tell him I’m looking forward to it.”

She blinked, searching his incredibly calm expression. ”You’re really not worried about him?”

Marvin let out a dark chuckle that rumbled beautifully against her chest. ”About Mathew? No.”

”Marvin, you don’t understand, he can be—”
