”Nicole, why not walk with another adult actor instead of a child?”

”Some critics say Hollywood keeps putting children in adult situations. What’s your response to that, Nicole?”

”Marvin, do you ever get tired of being treated like a miniature adult?”

”Nicole, are you helping launch his career, or is he helping save yours?”

”Marvin, do you think people would be reacting differently if the ages or genders were reversed?”

”Nicole, do you understand why some parents watching at home might be uncomfortable with this?”

”Marvin, how much of your public image is your choice and how much is decided by adults around you?”

And the next sort of question that would likely make nearby publicists immediately intervene:

”Nicole, if Marvin weren’t a box-office phenomenon, would you still be walking this carpet with him tonight?”

”Are the two of you here because of friendship, or because the studio knows the photographs will be everywhere tomorrow morning?”

”Nicole, does Hollywood sometimes forget that he’s still a child?”

”Marvin, when was the last time somebody treated you like a normal twelve-year-old instead of a celebrity?”

The questions continued coming without pause, each one more intrusive, inappropriate, angering than the last.

The media attack motives, exploit optics, and put both subjects in an uncomfortable position without crossing into explicit sexual line involving a minor.

Neither Nicole nor Marvin took the bait.

Years of public appearances had taught Nicole exactly how these events worked. Marvin seemed to have learned the lesson even faster.

Both simply maintained polite smiles for the cameras while continuing forward at a measured pace.

An unspoken rule governed red carpets. Truly major celebrities rarely stopped for random reporters. They saved their time for trusted interviewers, established television personalities, or pre-arranged publicity appearances that served a specific PR purpose.

Everyone else was background noise.

The reporters knew it.

The celebrities knew it.

Yet they shouted anyway.

One particularly determined reporter made a final attempt.

”Marvin! Is it true you’re planning another novel after Harry Potter?”

No response.

”Marvin! Are the rumors about your new album true?”

Nothing.

”Marvin! Who are you bringing to the Oscars?”

Not even a glance.

The pair continued walking as if the questions were little more than distant traffic noise.

Behind them, a young reporter from a small syndicated entertainment program lowered his microphone in defeat.

The collar of his dress shirt was soaked with sweat from fighting for position all evening.

”Forget getting anything spicy out from Nicole,” he muttered bitterly to the cameraman beside him. ”Why the hell does Marvin Meyers act more sophisticated than half the adults in this town? Every other celebrity eventually slips up and says something. He doesn’t.”

The cameraman snorted.

”Kid’s been famous for years.”

”Yeah, but he’s twelve,” the reporter replied. ”Twelve-year-olds aren’t supposed to navigate a press ambush like a veteran politician.”

A nearby journalist who had overheard the exchange shook his head.

”That’s because he never answers the question you’re asking.”

”What does that mean?”

”It means he’s already figured out the first rule of Hollywood,” the older reporter said, watching Marvin disappear into the crowd. ”The less you give them, the more they talk about you.”

The younger reporter glanced at the sea of microphones still pointed toward the retreating celebrity.

For the first time all evening, he realized he was probably right.

Another veteran colleague chimed in, in the press pen exchanged knowing, weary looks. One older, grizzled reporter from the *Hollywood Reporter* finally spoke up, adjusting his press badge.

”Are you brand new to this beat, kids? Don’t you know the rules yet? Marvin Meyers operates as no ordinary kid.” The veteran pointed his pen toward the theater doors. ”He proves incredibly smart, and he does not easily fall into a soundbite. Haven’t you seen any of his past interviews on these carpets? Even if you try to provoke him with a hostile question, he won’t lose his temper or speak out of turn unless you cross a very specific, invisible line.”

”What line?” the young reporter asked.

”That’s the neat part,” the veteran sighed. ”We have yet to identify exactly where that line sits. But nobody wants to be the first guy who finds out.”

Another journalist, a woman holding a tape recorder, chimed in. ”He acts clever. He mimics a fox exactly. I interviewed him at the Golden Globes last year. I thought I asked him a tough, gotcha question about his royalty contracts. I swear, he politely mocked me for three minutes straight, and I felt so charmed by his tone I didn’t even realize I suffered an insult until I listened to the tape later in my car.”

A few more reporters around them chuckled and chimed in, all nodding and agreeing with the assessment of the boy’s media savvy. But it wasn’t long before one of the younger photographers spoke up with a surprisingly honest, unexpected confession.

”You know, strangely enough, despite how arrogant he can behave... I don’t actually hate the kid. I actually really like him.”

”Yeah,” the female journalist agreed softly, looking at her recorder. ”I don’t hate him either. He seems authentic.”

”He completely mocked me to my face on tape,” the veteran reporter admitted, shaking his head. ”But I still ended up writing a glowing piece defending his movie in my column the next day. I couldn’t help it.”

”I think... I think I just really like this kid too. He makes this boring job interesting.”

A bizarre silence suddenly fell over the small group of journalists as they stood on the red carpet, individually reflecting on the strange affection they all harbored for a child who routinely outsmarted them. It represented the subtle, lingering residue of the Incubus charm, ensuring his presence stayed protected by the very people meant to tear it down.

Just then, the deafening noise and screaming accompanying the arrival of Tom Hanks broke the quiet moment. The frantic, professional chatter resumed instantly, microphones rose again, and no one seemed to notice the strange unnatural silence of adoration momentarily taking over the press pen.

After finally entering the grand, opulent Dorothy Chandler awards hall, Marvin and Nicole exchanged warm pleasantries and separated.

Their assigned seating arrangements, dictated by studio politics and category groupings, weren’t located next to each other.

Marvin walked confidently down the carpeted aisle, ignoring the stares of the seated celebrities, and quickly found his designated group. He joined the assembled crew of *The Sixth Sense*, taking his seat in the aisle. M. Night Shyamalan, looking nervous in his tuxedo, waved enthusiastically at him from a few seats down.

As Marvin comfortably settled into his plush seat, adjusting his jacket, he casually glanced around the room to assess the place.

He immediately noticed their biggest, most competition of the night sitting in a large, prominent block near the front stage: the sprawling crew of *Shakespeare in Love*, which bullied its way into receiving a staggering 13 nominations.

Harvey sat like a bloated king in the center of the row, having worked tirelessly for months to promote the film and secure those votes, catching Marvin’s eye.

Harvey gave Marvin a confident thumbs-up.

Marvin offered a polite nod, returning the gesture with a tight smile. But his attention quickly shifted away from the Miramax boss toward another, far more prestigious corner of the room.

There, sitting quietly with his team, he spotted the second biggest contender of the evening: the crew behind the masterful war epic *Saving Private Ryan*, which commanded 11 deserved nominations. Steven Spielberg, sitting next to Tom Hanks, seemed to sense the boy’s gaze.

The director turned, met Marvin’s eyes, and raised his glass of water in a silent, acknowledging toast from across the room.

Marvin returned the gesture with a warm smile of respect.

Marvin’s eyes wandered across the ballroom once more, taking in the sea of Hollywood royalty gathered beneath the glittering chandeliers.

In the distance, he spotted the assembled cast and filmmakers behind The Thin Red Line. The acclaimed war epic had secured seven Academy Award nominations, matching The Sixth Sense and establishing itself as one of the night’s formidable competitors, particularly in the technical and craft categories. At the center of the gathering stood director Terrence Malick, the famously elusive filmmaker whose return to cinema had become one of the industry’s biggest stories, alongside George Clooney, whose star power ensured a constant stream of attention from nearby guests.

Not far from them was another table attracting considerable interest: the team behind Elizabeth. The lavish historical drama had also earned seven nominations, placing it among the Academy’s most celebrated films of the year and making it yet another rival standing shoulder-to-shoulder with The Sixth Sense. The unmistakable presence of Cate Blanchett dominated the table. Her portrayal of Queen Elizabeth I had transformed her into one of the breakout stars of the awards season. Beside her sat Geoffrey Rush, already regarded as one of the finest actors of his generation and a respected veteran among the nominees.

Seven nominations.

Seven nominations.

Seven nominations.

The Academy had effectively grouped The Sixth Sense, The Thin Red Line, and Elizabeth together as peers. Different genres. Different audiences. Different stories.

Yet tonight, all three stood on equal footing, competing for Hollywood’s highest honors beneath the same roof.

Marvin sighed softly inwardly, leaning back in his chair. The competition for the Oscar statuettes tonight looked incredibly fierce, packed with genuine masterpieces of cinema.

But Marvin already knew the grim, inevitable outcome of the night’s main event. The biggest, ultimate winner of all the prestige tonight would not feature any brilliant actor, nor a visionary director like Spielberg.

The winner would present none other than Harvey fat fucking Weinstein himself. The studio boss successfully, permanently broke the integrity of the Academy voting system with his smear campaigns and lavish parties, and he prepared to reap the unearned rewards.

He hadn’t just bent the rules; he had shattered them with a multi-million-dollar sledgehammer, and now he was prepared to reap the unearned rewards.

To understand the Weinstein method, one had to understand the landscape of the 90s. There was no streaming. If a voter missed a theatrical run, they might wait months for a VHS. Before Harvey, an Oscar campaign for an independent film was a polite, gentlemanly affair with a budget of perhaps two hundred and fifty thousand dollars.

Harvey turned it into a five-million-dollar political war.

He didn’t just campaign for votes; he hunted them. Mapping the Academy’s aging demographics like a military general, he ensured his films were inescapable. If an Academy voter was skiing in Aspen, vacationing with family in Hawaii, or even hooked up to life support in a Hollywood motion picture retirement home, a Miramax representative was there. They didn’t just drop off a tape—they hosted fully catered, private screenings.

Then came the relentless phone banks. Weinstein’s team operated like political operatives, calling elderly Academy members at home in a barrage of aggressive badgering masked as courtesy. They would pitch relative newcomers like Billy Bob Thornton for *Sling Blade*, following up constantly until confused, retired actors—some of whom initially mistook the title for a Sylvester Stallone action flick—voted for Thornton just to make the phone calls stop.

When the Academy’s polite traditions stood in his way, Harvey simply bulldozed them. There were strict rules against studios hosting lavish parties for their own nominees to court voters.

Harvey’s workaround was brazen: he called them ”press events.” When *Life is Beautiful* was in the running, its star, Roberto Benigni, practically moved to Los Angeles, attending Miramax-funded galas every single night. He rubbed shoulders, drank the finest champagne, and charmed the voters until his Best Actor win was a mathematical certainty.

But the lavish parties and the relentless charm offensives were only half the strategy. The other half was pure venom.

Harvey weaponized the ”whisper campaign.” If a rival film gained traction, he dragged it into the mud. When his own *Shakespeare in Love* was up against Steven Spielberg’s masterpiece *Saving Private Ryan*, Weinstein cornered journalists and voters at industry parties, loudly trashing Spielberg’s war epic as ”front-loaded” and unmemorable after the first twenty minutes.

He leaned on the press to print his narratives.

No tactic was too low. When the indie darling *Slumdog Millionaire* emerged as a Best Picture threat years later, Weinstein’s machine planted vicious rumors of child exploitation regarding the young Indian cast to derail its momentum. When Roman Polanski’s *The Pianist* became a front-runner, Miramax operatives panicked; shortly after, a devastating, thirty-year-old deposition from Polanski’s victim miraculously materialized on a tabloid website. If he couldn’t outspend his competition, he assassinated their character.

Even his own creatives weren’t safe. Harvey earned his nickname, ”Harvey Scissorhands,” by violently seizing control of editing rooms. He bullied, threatened, and physically intimidated directors, chopping their artistic visions into perfect, sterile ”Oscar bait.” The industry whispered about his terrifying temper—the screaming matches, the physical altercations—but they happily turned a blind eye. The statues brought immense box office returns, reinvigorating VHS sales and validating his god complex.
