My Alleged Husband

Chapter 1978: Chapter 1772: Years of Affection

Why do you have to be so sentimental? Even if I traded the whole world, I still couldn’t make you understand how I feel.

In the blink of an eye, two whole weeks had passed. Through these two long weeks, every single day for them was pure torment. No one contacted anyone, because they all felt that no matter who reached out first, it wouldn’t end well. Why should they bow their heads and let the other person look down on them, thinking they were too cowardly and useless?

That afternoon, Zhang Ni was yelling at his mom at the top of his lungs, but his father caught him. His father couldn’t hold it in any longer and hit him again. He rolled his eyes hard at his own father, and his father had never imagined that his son would actually hate him too.

”Nai’er, hasn’t Dad told you before, no matter what happens, you cannot yell at your elders, at your own mother like that. How can you do this today? Do you know that every time you yell at your mom, it hurts her so much? Because every time you shout at her like that, you’re not treating your mom as your elder at all. Do you think your mom wouldn’t be heartbroken? You’re such a sensible kid—don’t you even understand this simple truth? Dad already told you before, this is something you must understand. Every time you shout like that, you hurt the people who love you. Doing this only makes others sadder and sadder. You will never really experience how awful it feels to be hurt by someone you love, do you understand? She’s your mother. She’s been enduring the hurt you inflict on her again and again. But she’s not some saint; she can’t possibly stay indifferent every single time. Being talked to like that by her own son over and over again—do you really think her heart doesn’t ache? I know she would never raise a hand to hit you, because you’re her most precious son. But it’s exactly because of that that you should treat your mother even better, shouldn’t you? How can you keep hurting her over and over, hurting that heart that loves you most?” Zhang Yichen really could not tolerate anyone yelling at his wife, not even his own son. She cared so much about these little details. He only hoped his own flesh and blood would treat his wife well. But why did even his son have to treat her like this? What else could he possibly do in this world to make his son have at least a little conscience?

”Dad, I didn’t do it on purpose this time. I didn’t mean to yell at Mom. I just got a little mad at what she was saying, and all of a sudden my voice got louder and I blurted those things out. Dad, I hope you won’t stay mad at me. Grown-ups shouldn’t hold grudges against kids. I know you feel awful inside when I yell at Mom, but I really hope you can understand—I truly didn’t mean it. Who doesn’t have moments when they can’t control their emotions? Honestly, I only did it because I hoped Mom would stop going on about me. When she keeps talking like that, I feel terrible inside too! I’m a person as well. Even though I’m still just a kid, I know what it is to feel sad and upset. I know every word my mom says is for my own good, but who doesn’t have a rebellious phase? When she says the same stuff in my ear over and over again, it’s only natural I’d feel uncomfortable. A lot of things only need to be said once, but she keeps repeating them once, twice, three times, and it makes me feel agitated and restless inside. Dad, I know what I did today was a bit over the line and really broke Mom’s heart. I don’t know if there’s any way to calm you down, but I want you to believe that I will go and apologize to Mom. I hope you can understand that as your son, I really just want our family to live the happy, peaceful life we all want.”

”Yichen, that’s enough, this really isn’t such a big deal. Why are you being so fierce with the child? What child doesn’t make mistakes sometimes? As long as he can change and realize he was wrong, that’s enough. Don’t be so harsh. If you’re too harsh, he’ll feel like we’re forcing him into a corner. Every kid needs some space. We should let him live the life he wants, let him be happy and free in the way he longs to be. We keep such a tight grip on him every single day; of course he’ll feel irritated inside. A lot of the time, if we just give him a bit of free space, let him relax, maybe things wouldn’t turn out this bad. We’ve already been through it all; who wasn’t mischievous as a child? Even though everyone’s childhood is different, we adults know how hard it was when we were small. Why make our children go through that all over again? When he could be playing happily and carefree, we shouldn’t make him bear the same pain we once did!” Listening to Zhang Yichen scolding their son nonstop out in the hallway, Ran Zhihan felt there was really no need to blow this up so much. Yes, her son had raised his voice at her, but who doesn’t make mistakes? Shouldn’t he be given a chance to correct himself? As long as he understood that his behavior was wrong, that was enough.

”Dad, please don’t be angry anymore. Look, Mom’s already come out to plead for me. Are you really going to ignore even what Mom says and make her sad all over again? I know you love Mom a lot. Since you love her so much, you should treat her well and not let things about me damage the relationship between you and Mom. Mom, I really know I was wrong this time. I’ll never do it again. Thank you for speaking up for me to Dad today. I know you still love me in your heart, but what I did today was really too much. How could I yell at you over something so small? You love me so much, you wish you could give me all the best things in the world, yet I treated you like that. I’m simply an unfilial son. Mom, I hope you can forgive me too. Please don’t stay angry at me. If you still can’t feel at ease inside, you can hit me!”

How could Ran Zhihan bear to hit this precious son of hers? This was the child she had brought into the world through so much hardship. To carry him safely and bring him here, she had put in so much effort. And now her son was asking her to hit him—how could she possibly raise her hand against him? Besides, he was her most beloved son, the crystallization of the love between her and the person she loved most.

I don’t know if one day your too-sentimental heart will end up costing me my life.
