My Alleged Husband

Chapter 550: Chapter 529: Lend a Helping Hand (Part 2)_1

Xia Jing knew that Zhang Zhentian wasn’t lying about this matter, trying to get her back by his side, but he still didn’t want to return with him so easily, because, in his eyes, his husband had cast his wife aside recklessly to achieve his own goals. For him, this was undoubtedly the biggest blow—a blow that couldn’t be forgotten with just a few words. If the hurt caused by such blows could be so easily forgotten, then why would he have decided, disheartened, to leave his husband’s side? Wasn’t all of this destined to end this way? What was their purpose in doing all this? Was it just to soften his heart time and time again, or was there another agenda?

Upon hearing no reply from the other party, Zhang Zhentian knew she was still hesitant. He persisted, speaking to his wife, ”No matter what prejudices you may still hold against me, I hope you can let go of all those prejudices and come back with me to my father’s side. I know the wrongs I’ve committed in the past were my fault, and after making those mistakes, I lacked the courage to step forward and accept responsibility. I am not a man, and I don’t deserve to be your husband, but now I’ve understood that, at the very least, a man should have the responsibility to bravely face the consequences. If I can’t even uphold that responsibility, then I don’t deserve to be a man, let alone your husband!

The mistakes I’ve made should not be paid for by my father. Those mistakes were entirely my doing. Why should my father be the one to take the fall for me? He doesn’t owe me anything. On the contrary, I now realize, as my son so rightly said, that it is not my dad who owes me—it’s me who owes my father so much. I’ve never fully appreciated his love for me. I took his love for granted and never once considered why he was willing to go to such lengths for me. Only today have I realized that his love for me is selfless, given wholeheartedly with the only wish for me to live a happy life, to have the life I want. Even though I’ve roamed the world and refused to return to his side, he accepted it. All he wants is for his son and grandson to be safe and healthy. To him, he could give up anything just to see the people he cares about smiling every day. That’s enough for him. I can never repay my father in this lifetime. He has given me so much love, and I’ve always repaid him with hurt. I really don’t understand how cruel I must have been back then. My father has loved me so much, yet it was as if I had the heart of a dog...

In your heart, you must think I don’t deserve to be my father’s son. He has given me so much love, and I’ve hurt him so badly. Although you’ve never said these things out loud, I still know what you are thinking. Otherwise, how could we have been husband and wife for over a decade?

With the situation as it is, I have no right to ask you for anything, but I beg you to see this as your last sacrifice for me. In light of how well my father has treated you, in light of how he has always protected you, please return to his side and accompany him for a while. That would be enough for him!”

”Even though you speak with such righteous indignation, and I am quite moved, do you know what? You may have touched me, but you can’t change the fundamental reality. The mistakes that have been made must be faced. Do you understand that just because you say a few casual words, I should forgive all the wrongs you’ve committed? Can all the many wrongs you’ve done be overlooked because of your few words of repentance now? Truthfully, I really can’t do that!

I don’t even understand why you are suddenly saying all these words to me now. Have you thought about it? If you had really had such thoughts before, if you really felt you were wrong, how could you possibly have said such cruel words of rejection to your own father, making him angry enough to end up in the hospital? Maybe in your heart, your father’s well-being is far less important than your own interests. Telling me now that you care about your father—are you joking with me?

I know it hurts your pride and makes you lose face for me to directly expose the lies beneath your mask, but Zhang Zhentian, let me tell you, with things having reached this point, no matter what’s on your mind, I hope you can keep those thoughts to yourself. It’s better to nip in the bud any inappropriate thoughts that shouldn’t be there. Otherwise, one day, you’ll truly regret it for the rest of your life. Your father is not a tool for you to use to get me back by your side. If he knew what you are doing, how heartbroken would he be to know that you are still exploiting him while he is seriously ill in the hospital?”

Xia Jing simply couldn’t believe Zhang Zhentian’s words, because he knew Zhang Zhentian’s character all too well. Zhentian was not the kind of person who would immediately correct his mistakes once he knew of them. Every word he said was purposeful. Over the years, she had come to thoroughly understand the lifestyle and speaking habits of her former husband. She wouldn’t be as naive as before, believing everything her husband said.

Because every time she gave her trust wholeheartedly, the result always left her heartbroken. She couldn’t muster such righteousness. She knew that every contribution she made would only lead to painful returns, yet she still proceeded without hesitation. She thought that if she was sincere, one day her husband would recognize her good qualities. But now she understood that all of it was impossible. Her husband would never see her worth.

”Sometimes, I think you’re quite shameless. Your father has become like this, yet you refuse to return to his side and accompany him, unwilling to go to the hospital to see him. But in order to get me back to your side, you actually use your father as an excuse. I don’t know how sad he would be if he knew that. The son he worked so hard to raise turned out to be an ingrate. If he realized the extent of your betrayal, just think how hurt he would be to know that the son he cherished so much is actually exploiting his own father!”
