My Alleged Husband

Chapter 545: Chapter 524 Discussing a Surprise_1

Zhang Yichen looked at his wife bustling about before his eyes and suddenly felt so grateful that he had listened to his grandfather’s words and had not heartlessly driven her out of the house. If he hadn’t, where would he find such a virtuous wife to stay by his side? Life is just like that; one only realizes how perfect and important what they once had is after they are at risk of losing it.

”Zhihan, what should we do if Grandpa suddenly leaves us? I’ve become so accustomed to his company over the years, and his care for us has been meticulous. He even wanted to give us the very best of everything he had, yet there’s nothing we can do to help him. Now he has to struggle with his illness every day, and it might be a prolonged fight. When I see the pain in his heart, mine hurts too. I’m painfully aware of what Grandpa cares about most, and that I am powerless to help him fulfill his dearest wish. I can’t do it because I need to consider his feelings.”

”I can’t even imagine, if one day Grandpa really leaves us, what I would do. The greatest hope in my life has always been my grandpa, who has done so much for me, and yet I’ve never been able to repay him at all. I might be known as the greatest economic emperor in the eyes of the world, but I can’t keep my grandpa alive for a century.”

Ran Zhihan sighed. She knew what her husband wanted to say, uncertain whether the outcome would be good or bad. She too felt conflicted and pained, forced to make choices about things she would rather not think about because there was no other way to handle the consequences.

”Yichen, right now we shouldn’t worry about anything else. We should think about how to make you live a happy life and have the life he or she wants, rather than troubling over us like before. His life has always been centered around us, and as long as he sees us happy, he thinks it’s the greatest joy in the world. But we never thought about him. He needs our care, our company, and to have us by his side all the time!”

”Before, I didn’t understand anything and would quarrel with you constantly, causing Grandpa to worry about us both. Seeing Grandpa’s pale face lying on the hospital bed, my heart truly aches, but I don’t know what to say. I can only stand there silently watching him suffer from his illness. I’m afraid that once I speak, it would make Grandpa think his condition is serious. I don’t know how to comfort Grandpa; I just think if Grandpa has a chance to recover, then I will do my best to take care of him. It’s because of him that I have achieved what I have today, that my marriage has become so happy and perfect, and that my nearly shattered marriage has returned to its original state!”

”There isn’t much we can do, but the one thing we can do is to stay by Grandpa’s side with a grateful heart and make him happy. I know Grandpa has always wanted a surprise, and only the two of us together can accomplish that. So, I thought we should give Grandpa some news as soon as possible. Perhaps with the stimulation of the surprise, his illness will vanish, and he can recover and leave the hospital soon. I know this is what you wanted to discuss with me today, you just didn’t know how to bring it up, so you’ve been changing the subject!”

”Now that I’ve brought it up on my own, you don’t have to feel awkward or uncertain about what to say. What needs to be said must be spoken, and what needs to be done must be done. There’s no right or wrong, it’s just about knowing what to do. Since we have decided to do this, we must make it worthwhile, so that Grandpa can recover and leave the hospital soon because of the good news!”

Zhang Yichen hadn’t expected his wife to be so considerate, bringing up the surprise he had been hesitant to mention out of fear of embarrassment. Now, not only had she spared him the awkwardness, but she had also given them the chance to fulfill Grandpa’s greatest hope.

”Wife, thank you. You are the greatest fortune of my life. Without a wife like you, how could I have lived happily, step by step, to where I am now? You have seen me at my most painful, and you must understand that I long for happiness, for joy, more earnestly than others. When Grandpa fell ill and was hospitalized, I didn’t know how to start talking about many things, and I didn’t know whether I should tell my sister or not, but having you by my side always feels like the warmest thing. You are the one who made everything clear to me repeatedly, preventing me from being confused when making decisions!”

Ran Zhihan didn’t know how to respond to her husband. Would saying that she’ll always be by his side seem too lacking in confidence, like someone who’s trying too hard? But seeing her husband’s vulnerability in front of her, how could her heart not be moved? She wanted to comfort him, to ensure he could continue to rely on her, that kind of lifelong, eternal dependence that exists between husband and wife, a bond that can never be broken.

”Let’s quickly cook something delicious and go see Grandpa. Since we’ve decided to give him a surprise, we should prepare well. First, let him regain his strength, and then who knows, we might soon be able to give Grandpa the wonderful news he has been waiting for!”

Although neither of them spoke plainly, they both saw the shine of happiness in each other’s eyes. Isn’t that itself a happy occurrence for them? Happiness is indeed very simple; as long as a couple can face all difficulties together with one heart, isn’t that the greatest joy and happiness?

Together in the kitchen, they bustled about preparing a nutritious dinner for Old Master Zhang, a frenzy of activity interspersed with laughter. The two laughing people could hardly have imagined that in just a few days, they would indeed bring that good news, eagerly awaited by everyone.
