Transmigrated as a Peasant Baby Who is Pampered by All

Chapter 430: Chapter 265: Mountain Deer (Part 3)

”My goodness, you two little boys are amazing.” Captain Chen was utterly astonished.

An adult mountain deer, this type’s smaller in size, but the largest can weigh seventy to eighty pounds. The one in front of us looks to be at least fifty to sixty pounds.

Wei Ziang smiled shyly: ”Captain Chen, you’re too kind. It’s just that it fell down, and we can’t get it up.”

”I’ll go down. Brother Jiang, you assist from above.”

As he spoke, Captain Chen jumped down. He was tall and robust, being a government official who practiced martial arts regularly. With one hand, he easily lifted the mountain deer.

Jiang Hu was the same; although he didn’t know martial arts, he did hard farm labor daily, and was strong and muscular. The two of them had no trouble getting the deer up.

Then they helped Captain Chen back up. Jiang Hu carried the deer on his shoulders, and Captain Chen held five or six wild rabbits, heading back in grand fashion.

On the way, Captain Chen asked the two who taught them how to hunt. Learning that they had no teacher and were entirely self-taught, he was even more amazed.

When they returned with their prey, the previously quiet crowd erupted with noise and exclamations, which continued for quite a while before settling down.

However, their family was evidently more concerned about the two children, especially the second mother, who nearly fainted seeing the blood on their faces and bodies. Even knowing it wasn’t their blood, she thoroughly checked them over before feeling relieved.

Xiaomi and Wei Ziang, having run so far and dragged seventy to eighty pounds of game such a distance, were exhausted and hungry, paying no mind to the prey.

They washed their hands, gulped down a bowl of warm water, and devoured half a baked pancake with large bites, finally regaining strength.

The two of them sighed in satisfaction, exchanged glances, and smiled.

”Wow, Xiaomi, Ziang, you two are incredible, even managing to hunt a mountain deer! I heard they run really fast.”

Jiang Yu returned from the crowd.

Just now, everyone gathered around to see the deer and rabbits, not just them, but others too.

This midsummer, there wasn’t much one could bring while traveling, aside from grain and beans that could sprout, good homes carried some salted or cured meat, but most people didn’t have any.

From the county to the prefecture, twenty-odd days with only four or five days to stop at villages or other county towns.

Other times, almost everyone stayed in the wild, making supplies hard to come by.

Seeing these wild rabbits and mountain deer, everyone was envious; this was meat!

Fortunately, everyone was civil, at most just looking and envying, and that was it.

Once the novelty wore off, everyone went back to rest, since they needed to continue traveling later.

The prey was placed by the Jiang family’s cart because they had just gone to find Xiaomi and Wei Ziang, so the Jiang family was just starting to eat.

Jiang Hu ate half a bowl of porridge, gnawed on a pancake, and only after feeling less hungry did he look at Xiaomi and Wei Ziang.

”Xiaomi, Ziang, what do you think about Captain Chen’s suggestion on the way back?”

Earlier, on the way back, Captain Chen had said that they could reach the county town by walking for over an hour in the afternoon and rest well for a night.

In summer, meat can’t be preserved for long; they couldn’t finish so much at once. Why not sell it in the county town this afternoon? This mountain deer could sell for a dozen or so taels of silver.

But since the children caught it themselves, Jiang Hu thought Captain Chen was right but intended to ask for the children’s opinion.

If they were reluctant to sell, they’d see if it could be made into something that lasts longer.

But regarding this matter, Xiaomi looked at Wei Ziang: ”Big Brother?”

They had discussed earlier how they might handle it.

Wei Ziang thought for a moment, then said, ”Uncle Jiang, we can’t sell it for much; we might as well keep it for ourselves. This is the first time we’ve caught a mountain deer.”

Xiaomi nodded repeatedly: ”That’s right, that’s right, Dad, we can turn the meat into jerky and sell the deer skin, bones, antlers, whip, and tendons.”

Those could all be used in medicine.

Wei Ziang continued: ”Deer meat is also a great tonic, turning it into jerky and eating some on the road. Especially Big Brother and Brother Ze, it can help strengthen their bodies, and Auntie and Second Sister have been rather listless after sitting in the cart.”

A few taels of silver, he thought Uncle Jiang probably didn’t care much about it; family health was more important. It’s always good to have something nourishing on such a long journey.

Xiaomi: ”Oh right, Dad, we also need to give Captain Chen a pound of donkey meat since he helped us.”

The two children made their decision, each following up on what the other said.

Jiang Hu smiled helplessly: ”Alright, alright, we’ll do as you say. Keep the deer meat for jerky, and sell the rest in town.”

Wei Ziang and Xiaomi exchanged a cheerful glance; the offal, hard to deal with, could be sold, and the rest could fetch some money too.
