Transmigrated as a Peasant Baby Who is Pampered by All

Chapter 378: Chapter 249: Plantain

Anyone who has tasted their family’s food knows that even a chicken is a great tonic!

And who knows if Lucky Star’s luck has really run out? Maybe one day good fortune will descend again, benefiting the entire county!

As an official of the people, the County Magistrate can’t overlook this.

So Xiaomi has every reason to believe that this move isn’t just about relocating to make it easier to take care of the kids’ schooling.

Perhaps now, other than the County Magistrate’s family, no one knows where the ’Little Lucky Star’ family ended up.

Thinking this way, Xiaomi felt reassured. Judging by the situation, they should be free to develop as they wish!

”Why are you sitting here all the time? It’s such a hot sun, why not go inside?”

Second Aunt came over from the kitchen, holding a basket, and saw Xiaomi sitting on the steps by the pond, daydreaming with her chin in her hands.

”Mom, what are you drying this time?” The bamboo shoots were sun-dried a few days ago, and the basket still had a dark green hue.

”The plantains I dug up this morning, blanched them with water and dried them. They can be used to stew pork trotters and cured meat, it’s very delicious.”

Second Aunt pulled one out as she spoke: ”Look at this, the root in front is so big, it must have grown for many years.”

Indeed it was large, the rootstock of the plantain was even thicker than an adult’s thumb, showing how many years it had grown.

But looking at this plantain, a thought suddenly struck Xiaomi.

”Mom, herbs with such age, they must be quite valuable, right?”

Second Aunt placed the basket in a sunny spot: ”Even those without much age are quite valuable, herbs are more expensive than grains.”

It seemed she knew what Xiaomi was about to ask, so as Second Aunt spread the plantains on the basket, she said with a smile.

”But we didn’t dig up much today, no need to specifically make a trip to the city, let’s just keep it for ourselves to eat.”

Eating plantains in the summer has the effect of clearing heat and reducing fire, and they’re especially fragrant when stewed with cured meat.

So this is not only a medicinal herb but also a wild vegetable.

Yet after listening to her parents, Xiaomi’s eyes lit up even more: ”Mom, why don’t we plant herbs?”

Second Aunt paused her actions, looking at her in confusion: ”Herbs? Aren’t there herbs on the mountain? Why plant them?”

To Second Aunt, almost everyone could recognize some basic, commonly seen herbs, and if they encountered them while going about their daily business, they could dig them up to sell to the pharmacy as a way to supplement the household income.

And they’re not cheap, no need to worry about not being able to sell them.

In contrast, Second Aunt, who had been helping with farm work since she was about four or five, only ever thought of planting grains in the fields and never considered planting herbs.

For her and everyone else, the herbs they recognized were all growing on the edges of the fields and embankments; they never allowed them to grow in the fields, as that would waste the crops!

So when Xiaomi suggested this, it was already quite remarkable that Second Aunt didn’t directly oppose it.

Xiaomi knew what the situation was, so she mentally gathered her words.

”Mom, didn’t you say herbs are more expensive than grains? Let’s just plant a small piece of land with plantains. Once the plantain seeds mature, we’ll go to the mountain to find seeds and give it a try first?”

Second Aunt didn’t directly agree, nor did she outright refuse, she only asked her: ”Why do you suddenly want to plant herbs?”

Xiaomi rarely had the sudden urge to do something, especially not related to field work.

So her sudden suggestion made Second Aunt both surprised and thoughtful.

Xiaomi giggled: ”Nothing really, just seeing the plantain you held earlier blooming brought it to mind.”

Second Aunt was taken aback, looking at the plantain flower.

Indeed, it had a flower spike just slightly longer than the leaves, evidently it hadn’t grown for long, and she hadn’t noticed it when she was cleaning.

The flower spike was rather tough, so when she was washing it, she had simply plucked it off, and what Xiaomi mentioned was one of the few remaining.

After thinking it over, Second Aunt said: ”We’ll wait till your dad comes back tonight, I’ll discuss it with him. We can scatter some seeds in the field like planting vegetables and see how it goes.”

Although she hadn’t planted them before, after eating plantain stew for years, she was familiar with plantain seeds — they were very small, as tiny as spring onion seeds.

You couldn’t plant them one by one; instead, the land had to be tilled, and the seeds scattered directly.

”That’s great, thank you, Mom!” Xiaomi jumped high with excitement, knowing that since Mom said this, it meant she had agreed.
