Transmigrated as a Peasant Baby Who is Pampered by All

Chapter 356: Chapter 242: Decision

Just like Xiaomi observed, once you get familiar, Xiaocao is very warm-hearted.

She only asked the first question, and Xiaocao explained everything in detail, leaving nothing out.

It turns out that entering the city requires a ticket fee, one copper coin per person, in exchange for a pass to enter and exit the city.

And people from the city also have separate proof that they need to return to the guard when going back.

If it’s a wealthy family with a horse-drawn carriage, generally they only need one proof, and the checks aren’t particularly thorough.

After all, wealthy families living in the city pay no small amount of taxes each year, so they don’t mind the one or two copper coins for entering and exiting the city gate.

Don’t be fooled by Xiaocao’s young age; she’s already familiar with these procedures from frequently going to the city to buy groceries with her mother.

As for the news about wealthy families, they were overheard from passersby at the market.

Xiaomi understood after listening. In the few times she went to the city before, it was Liu family’s servant who picked them up, and they did indeed stop at the city gate.

Thinking back now, that must have been the driver proving themselves to the guards.

Xiaomi absentmindedly dug bamboo shoots, wondering if her parents knew about these things.

They should know. After all, when she suddenly fell unconscious before, her parents specially took her to the city to see a doctor, they must have experienced these procedures.

Moreover, there’s Qixi and Uncle Liu, who would also inform her parents about these rules.

It’s just that she rarely focused attention here, so she didn’t notice.

”Xiaomi, what’s going on? Are you also thinking about going to the city?” Her sleeve was tugged. Xiaocao was looking at her curiously.

Xiaomi nodded: ”Yes, I want to see what it’s like.”

”Doesn’t your family have a carriage going to the city every day? You could just go with them.”

Xiaocao said with envy: ”Your family must be really wealthy. I’ve never ridden a carriage in my whole life.”

Xiaomi smiled: ”That’s because several brothers in the family need to go to the city to study. How could I go with them? There’s no place for me to stay.”

The main issue is that she couldn’t find a reason to go with them either.

Anyway, it’s so close, it’s better to sneak into the city, disguise herself, then go to the market, buy or sell some things.

She doesn’t have much money. Over the years, she only got a bit of pocket money from her parents during holidays.

She’s been saving it, but it’s just a few copper coins, not even a piece of broken silver, still too little.

Besides, there are so many resources in the space, it wouldn’t make sense not to exchange them for some silver.

Luckily, Xiaomi didn’t say this out loud. Compared to the likes of Xiaocao in front of her, or rather, compared to most rural children in this world, they’re unlikely to get even a copper coin in a year.

”You have so many brothers? Do they all go to study in the city? That must cost a lot of silver, right?”

Xiaocao was even more envious.

”The tuition in the city’s schools is expensive. I heard that half a year’s tuition can support a family for one or two years. Even the richest family in the village sends their children to school in the neighboring town.”

”It’s that expensive?” Xiaomi was surprised and then shook her head: ”I don’t know about these things. It’s all my parents’ doing.”

Then Xiaomi changed the subject, no longer discussing this matter.

The bamboo here is also big, and if you take the bamboo shoots back with the shells, you can’t carry much.

However, everyone has come to dig many times and is experienced. Each person digs a large pile, then starts peeling the shells.

Except for Xiaomi, everyone is quick-handed and swiftly sorts out a pile of bamboo shoots, just enough to fill a basket to carry back.

Only Xiaomi has the least, she only dug over a dozen bamboo shoots, and once peeled, there were even fewer.

But no one said anything about it. After all, with such a large house, Xiaomi’s family surely has money and doesn’t need to sell bamboo shoots to make money.

By the time they once again crossed mountains and returned home, it was nearly noon.

Listening to a few girls say that once they get home, they still need to cook.

It’s really hard work.

For the first time in so many years, Xiaomi realized how difficult life is for ordinary families.

Since she was born in Fu’an Village, benefiting from the Spiritual Spring’s blessings, the whole Fu’an Village experiences bountiful harvests, flourishing vegetation, and prosperity year after year.

Girls are fair and beautiful, boys are tall and healthy. People like Xiaocao, who are dark and thin, clearly malnourished, were a distant memory for her.

Back then, she had just been born.
