Transmigrated as a Peasant Baby Who is Pampered by All

Chapter 318: Chapter 229: Shopping in Town (Part 2)

”They’re here, they’re here.” Xiaomi pulled Wei Ziang along and jogged to catch up.

As for Liu Ze and Second Sister and whoever, forget it, don’t worry about them.

Well, she couldn’t manage them anyway.

There was a commercial street selling good stuff, and naturally, there was also a flea market catering to common folk. There weren’t any expensive prices here, but there were plenty of things.

Food, clothing, drinks, and daily necessities, everything was available.

They even saw two foreign merchants selling some foods they didn’t recognize.

At least, except for Xiaomi, no one else knew what they were.

”That is milk powder, made from the milk of cows and sheep, only people from outside the pass make it. There’s also jerky and shredded meat, although they’re not cheap, but they taste quite good.”

The butler said while taking a bit of broken silver from his sleeve pocket: ”Pack a little of the jerky and shredded meat for me.”

”The smell of the milk powder is quite strong, most people can’t get used to it, but this jerky and shredded meat taste good, the young master and miss can give it a try.”

Because Jiang Hu had a good relationship with Uncle Liu, the few kids were also friends with Liu Ze, so the butler always referred to them as young masters and misses.

While talking, the boss wrapped a pile of jerky and shredded meat in several oil paper packages.

The small amount of broken silver seemed to be half a tael of silver, but these jerky and shredded meat looked like a lot, yet no more than five pounds in total.

They’re precious!

Xiaomi clicked her tongue: ”Butler Grandpa, this is so expensive. Such expensive things, why not buy them outside?”

The people passing by in the market all wore ordinary clothes, the butler being the most finely dressed.

Xiaomi, with her cute appearance, sweet voice, and polite address of calling him Butler Grandpa, made the butler’s smile even kinder.

”Miss Xiaomi might not know this, but these foreign merchants can’t reside in the city for long. They must leave the county within half a month at most each time.”

”And only doing business in the city for half a month, renting a store is not cost-effective. It’s cheaper and more free to set up a stall in this market.”

”Oh, I see.” Xiaomi nodded knowingly, while Jiang Wei couldn’t wait to pull out a piece of jerky and start eating it.

”It’s so hard.” After several bites, he finally bit off a tiny piece, but he had to chew it slowly.

The butler laughed and said: ”This is beef that’s been dried after being marinated, it’s indeed very hard. For us older folks, it’s too tough to chew.”

Though it’s hard to chew, it’s really delicious, especially loved by kids.

The beef jerky was a small strip, Xiaomi exerted some effort to break off two small pieces, gave one to Wei Ziang who hadn’t moved, and stuffed the rest into her own mouth.

Don’t say, the taste is indeed good, a very rich beef flavor with hints of salt and a bit of spice.

This beef jerky was very hard, they couldn’t bite through it for a while, so Wei Ziang held it in his mouth and asked in puzzlement.

”Butler Grandpa, isn’t the court strictly prohibiting the slaughter of plowing cattle? Then these beef jerky are?”

For those who have plowing cattle, they’re documented with the yamen just like people.

Plowing cattle are as important as people, a few cattle in a village could mean dozens more acres of grain planted.

The more grain grown, the more tax grain collected by the court, so plowing cattle are as important as people. Unlawfully slaughtering plowing cattle carries a crime equivalent to murder!

Only plowing cattle that died of old age or illness could be consumed, even those that died accidentally would be investigated by constables to determine if it was truly an accident or man-made.

So when he knew it was beef jerky, Wei Ziang was puzzled.

This stall was right out in the open, and the stock was plentiful. How much beef would it take to make so much jerky?

Upon Wei Ziang’s question, the others also remembered this issue.

”Right, Butler Grandpa, what’s going on here? Wouldn’t they get arrested?”

”That’s not the case, young masters.” They hadn’t yet left the stall, so the boss heard their conversation and explained in a broken accent: ”These are not Xuyu Dynasty’s plowing cattle, they’re yaks.”

Despite the accent, it was understandable.

”Huh? What are yaks?” Jiang Wei was bewildered.

The butler smiled as he explained: ”They’re different from our plowing cattle, they live on the grasslands, with long hair, and can’t survive in our Xuyu Dynasty.”

Jiang Yu pondered: ”I think I’ve seen it in books, beyond the border is mostly grassland, hills, and desert. Unlike us, they don’t raise chickens, ducks, or pigs, but cattle, sheep, and camels instead.”

The butler laughed heartily a few times: ”Young Master Jiang Yu is correct. Beyond the pass is different from our central plains, the cattle and sheep are different too, so the beef jerky we’re eating now isn’t made from central plains plowing cattle either.”
