Super Rich by Doing as You Please

Su Mu stated bluntly, ”But your daughter’s qualifications simply don’t meet our requirements. My hands are tied.”

”But Xu Yun said...” Zhang Lixin grew anxious. Just as he was about to bring up his nephew, Su Mu cut him off.

”Mr. Zhang, while Xu Yun is my business partner and a shareholder, he doesn’t participate in any aspect of company management.”

Su Mu added, ”Aside from collecting his share of the profits, I’m the one who calls the shots around here.”

”President Su, hold on.” Zhang Lixin couldn’t believe that Xu Yun, a company boss, wouldn’t have the pull to place one person.

He immediately dialed Xu Yun.

Xu Yun was driving when he saw his uncle calling. He let it ring a few extra times before picking up.

”Hey, Uncle.”

”Xu Yun, are you back from your business trip?”

”Not yet. I’ll be gone for a while longer. What’s up?”

Xu Yun asked with feigned concern, ”Oh, right, Uncle, I meant to ask you, is my cousin’s job all sorted out?”

”It’s not.”

”Why not? Didn’t I tell you to go see President Su?”

”I did. Your cousin and I are in President Su’s office right now.”

Zhang Lixin replied, ”It seems President Su won’t agree to let your cousin join the company. Could you talk to her again?”

”She won’t let her in?”

Xu Yun feigned surprised anger. ”Why won’t she let her in?!”

”She said she doesn’t meet the hiring requirements.”

”She’s my cousin! I’m the one who sent her! What’s this about following procedures?!”

Xu Yun boomed, ”Put the phone on speaker and give it to President Su. I’ll ask her what’s going on!”

”Okay.” Hearing Xu Yun say that, Zhang Lixin felt a little more confident. He put the call on speaker and placed the phone on Su Mu’s desk.

”President Su, Xu Yun wants to talk to you.”

Su Mu smiled and spoke into the phone, ”President Xu, what did you want to say to me?”

”President Su, this is my cousin we’re talking about. Didn’t I tell you to let her in and find a position for her?”

Xu Yun said angrily, ”What, you can’t even do me this one favor?”

”President Xu, business is business, and personal matters are personal matters. We can’t mix the two.”

Su Mu said, ”Because they are your uncle and cousin, I’ve already extended a personal courtesy. I arranged for someone to host them in Jiangcheng for two days, making sure they were well-fed and comfortably lodged. Think of it as me fulfilling the duties of a host on your behalf.

But from a professional standpoint, we were crystal clear when we first went into business together.

I’m in charge of the entire company, especially recruitment, and we can’t have any nepotism.

We’re running a business here to make a profit, not a charity. If we just let anyone in to collect a paycheck, how are we supposed to grow?”

”President Su, I get the principle, but this is my cousin. You’re really not going to let her in?”

”She is not!” Su Mu’s tone was unyielding.

Xu Yun said angrily, ”Fine, fine, fine! So you won’t even show me this much respect. Just wait until I get back. We’ll settle this then.”

”I’ll be waiting.”

Su Mu finished, hung up the phone, and handed it back to Zhang Lixin. ”Mr. Zhang, Miss Zhang, I’m sorry you made the trip for nothing.”

...

Zhang Lixin took back his phone and shot Su Mu a resentful look before leading Zhang Yufei out the door.

Su Mu stepped out of her office and called out, ”Ning Qian, please see our guests out.”

”Right away, President Su.”

Ning Qian escorted the pair to the door and asked with deliberate concern, ”Miss Zhang, how come you weren’t accepted?”

”I didn’t meet the requirements.”

”It didn’t work even after President Xu put in a word for you?”

”Yeah.”

Ning Qian said, feigning disappointment, ”Oh, what a shame we won’t be colleagues. I thought we really hit it off.”

Zhang Yufei was silent.

Zhang Lixin, standing to the side, suddenly asked Ning Qian, ”Miss Ning, what are your academic qualifications?”

”I have a bachelor’s degree.”

”From a top-tier university?”

”No, just a regular university.”

”But doesn’t your company only hire graduates from top-tier universities?”

”That must be for other positions.”

Ning Qian smiled and explained, ”I’m just a receptionist. Why would I need a degree like that?”

Zhang Lixin was speechless.

Her words left him speechless. It was true, what she said made perfect sense.

’This President Su seems like a good judge of character, but I didn’t expect her to be so inflexible and difficult to reason with when it comes to business.’

Outside the company building, Zhang Yufei said dejectedly, ”Dad, what am I going to do now?”

”What else can we do? Let’s go home.”

Zhang Lixin said, ”I’ll find you another job. You can be a temp for a while and keep studying for the civil service exam.”

’There’s no going back to her old job. She already quit. Going back now would just make her a laughingstock.’

Zhang Yufei was silent.

After getting into the car, Zhang Lixin called Xu Yun.

’Even though he hadn’t treated his nephew Xu Yun all that well in the past, he never expected Xu Yun to get into a full-blown argument with his business partner over the phone, all for his sake.’

’He really did try his best.’

As soon as the call connected, Xu Yun said apologetically, ”Uncle, I’m so sorry. I couldn’t make things work out for my cousin.”

”It’s alright, Xu Yun.”

Zhang Lixin said understandingly, ”If it can’t be done, it can’t be done. It’s not your company, after all. Don’t ruin your relationship with President Su over this.”

”Okay, Uncle. I’ll listen to you. Otherwise, when I get back, I’d definitely have to set her straight!”

Xu Yun then asked, ”So, are you two heading back today?”

”Yeah, we’re leaving now. I’ve been here for three days.”

”Alright Uncle, drive safe on the way back.”

Xu Yun added reassuringly, ”I’ll keep my cousin’s situation in mind. I’ll call you if an opportunity comes up.”

”Okay.”

The moment Xu Yun hung up with his uncle, he immediately dialed Su Mu.

”Sister Su, you were so fierce just now.”

Now alone, Su Mu laughed, a bit exasperated. ”And whose fault is that? Your uncle and cousin probably hate my guts now.”

”It’s fine, as long as you don’t hate me.”
