Super Rich by Doing as You Please

On the phone, the middle-aged man chuckled and asked, ”I hear the radio department has a new intern?”

”Yes, I believe we did.”

Director Wang glanced up in surprise at Song Xiaowei, who stood a short distance away. Feigning uncertainty, he asked tentatively, ”Chief Editor Qin, has she made some kind of mistake?”

”Not at all. In fact, I’ve heard her performance is excellent.”

The middle-aged man on the phone continued, ”I was just idly looking over the performance reports and noticed that ever since she arrived, the listenership for the late-night radio show she hosts has multiplied several times over.”

”Is that so? In that case, this intern’s performance really is excellent.”

Director Wang chimed in, ”The late-night radio show has always been our weak spot, always ranking last.”

”Exactly. We have to hold on to an outstanding intern like her. She’s the kind of talent we need, someone we should develop and look after.”

The middle-aged man added meaningfully, ”You’re in charge of personnel matters. Don’t let her slip through the cracks.”

”I won’t, I won’t.”

Director Wang quickly gave his assurance. ”I’ll go verify the details right now, and then I’ll have a word with her department head.”

”Alright. I just happened to come across it and thought I’d call to ask. I’ll let you get back to work.”

”Of course, Chief Editor Qin.”

Director Wang had just hung up when his phone rang again.

This time, it was Vice Director Li!

...

Sensing something was amiss, Director Wang answered the call. ”Director Li,” he said cautiously.

”Director Wang, I’ll keep this brief.”

Director Li said curtly, ”The station has its own principles when it comes to personnel. It’s not a place where people can just hire and fire as they please to satisfy their own selfish desires.

You’re primarily in charge of personnel evaluations, so you must guard the gate, so to speak. Be fair and impartial. Do you understand?”

”Understood.”

Director Wang stated his position, ”Director Li, rest assured. I have always operated according to the official guidelines for personnel. There is absolutely no favoritism or malpractice on my part.”

”Good.”

Then, Director Li’s tone suddenly shifted. ”I’m hearing from the staff that the radio department has a new hire. Very professional, an excellent person all around, is that right?”

”Yes, she’s indeed outstanding. A rare talent.”

How could Director Wang not understand Director Li’s implication? He played along, ”Her name is Song Xiaowei. She’s only been here a short time, but she’s already made the show she’s responsible for a rousing success. The listenership has multiplied several times over.”

”If we have such a talented person, then we should make a special exception. No need to be overly rigid.”

Director Li said, ”Let’s do this: you draft a report to make her position official, and I’ll sign off on it. We’ll make her a full-time employee ahead of schedule!”

”Yes, yes, of course, Director Li. I’ll get right on it.”

The back-to-back calls from two of his superiors made Director Wang break out in a cold sweat.

’That was a close call. I almost took a huge fall.’

He returned to the two of them, and when he looked at Song Xiaowei, his expression was completely different than before.

’Damn,’ he thought. ’I had no idea her connections were this powerful. Vice Director Li and Chief Editor Qin, of all people.’

’No wonder she was so unyielding!’

’If I’d fired her a minute ago, I’d probably be reassigned to guard the front gate by tomorrow.’

”So, um...”

Director Wang shot Bi Yang a resentful glare before turning to Song Xiaowei with a smile. ”Xiaosong,” he said in a soft, gentle voice, ”where were we?”

”You were saying the station has decided to fire me,” Song Xiaowei replied calmly.

”Fire you?”

Director Wang acted surprised. ”Xiaosong, what kind of joke is that? Why on earth would the station fire you?

What I clearly said was that your performance has been outstanding, you’re an excellent member of the team, and you’ve received unanimous praise.

Therefore, the station’s leadership has met and decided to make you a full-time employee ahead of schedule and to designate you as a key talent for further development!”

???

Bi Yang listened to Director Wang, his face a mask of utter confusion.

”But, Director Wang, didn’t you just...”

Director Wang shot him a vicious glare and cut him off in a cold voice. ”Director Bi, if you have no other business here, you can go. Xiaosong and I have important matters to discuss.”

Bi Yang: ”...”

The sudden way Director Wang had changed his tune after the phone calls, a complete 180-degree shift in attitude, caused the corners of Song Xiaowei’s mouth to curve up slightly.

It was a happy feeling.

Needless to say, this was definitely Xu Yun’s doing.

Even though he wasn’t physically here, with just a slight exertion of his influence, he could enable her to stand strong in the face of injustice and malevolence, unafraid of anyone.

This was her man. The man she loved!
