This Doctor Is Too Wealthy

Tang Yinglong felt like he was going insane; this world seemed too unreal. Less than a minute after they had parted, his nephew had collapsed, suffering from incontinence. Was this a joke?

At this point, he no longer cared about whether his relationship with Guan Bo would be exposed and rushed straight into the emergency room.

As soon as he entered, he grabbed the Director of the Emergency Department. ”Director Wang, how is he?”

”The examination shows there’s nothing fundamentally wrong with Doctor Guan’s physical condition,” Director Wang stated. ”He just has a slight irregular heartbeat and some difficulty breathing. He’s been given medication and is expected to regain consciousness soon.”

Director Wang’s words didn’t reassure Tang Yinglong in the slightest; instead, they made him even more anxious. ”Director Wang, you can’t just take advantage of the fact I don’t understand medicine! You have to check carefully. If there’s nothing physically wrong with him, how could he suddenly become incontinent and even faint?”

Director Wang showed no particular reaction to Tang Yinglong’s outburst, merely stating calmly, ”Doctor Guan is a doctor at our hospital, and now he’s also our patient. I am, of course, responsible for his examination. If you feel my examination wasn’t thorough or careful enough, you’re welcome to find someone else to re-examine him. I have no objections.”

Hearing this, Tang Yinglong realized he had spoken too rashly and quickly softened his tone. ”Director Wang, I was a bit too harsh just now; please don’t mind. I’m just asking, if he’s physically fine, why is he in this state?”

Director Wang glanced at Tang Yinglong and then said slowly, ”We’ve examined all parts of his body, and there are indeed no issues. We’ve also done a brain scan and found nothing. Therefore, regarding Doctor Guan’s current condition, we can rule out any physiological lesions.”

Tang Yinglong was stunned. ”What do you mean?”

”My initial suspicion is that Doctor Guan’s condition is a problem of consciousness. But whether that’s truly the case can only be determined after he regains consciousness.”

Tang Yinglong’s heart lurched. ”Are you saying this kid has a mental illness?”

Director Wang nodded. ”That possibility cannot be ruled out, and in fact, the likelihood is quite high.” He glanced at Tang Yinglong. ”It’s good you’re here. It saves me a trip to the Chinese Medicine Department. Could you help me contact Doctor Guan’s family? I need to confirm if there’s any family history of epilepsy.”

Tang Yinglong said directly, ”No need to check. I can tell you directly, his family has no hereditary history of epilepsy. Not on his father’s side, nor his mother’s, going back three generations.”

Director Wang shook his head. ”Deputy Dean Tang, I’m not joking with you.” He then looked at Tang Yinglong seriously. ”I need to determine the cause of the patient’s condition now. The sooner we identify it, the better it will be for him. Please, be responsible for the patient, and also for our own doctor.”

Seeing Director Wang’s serious demeanor, Tang Yinglong lowered his voice. ”Let me put it this way: this young man is my wife’s nephew. I’m quite familiar with their family’s situation.”

Director Wang leaned back slightly. ”Your nephew?”

”Yes.”

”You’ve certainly kept that quiet. None of us knew.”

Tang Yinglong sighed. ”The boy is strong-willed. He didn’t want people saying he was just getting by on connections.”

Director Wang nodded along with Tang Yinglong’s words. ”That’s admirable. He sounds like a good kid.”

Tang Yinglong immediately gave a bitter smile. ”He’s already thirty, but he really does act like a child. You must have heard about what happened yesterday. Would any normal adult do something like that? It’s completely childish behavior.”

Director Wang chuckled but didn’t pursue that topic. Instead, he asked again, ”Are you certain his family has no hereditary history of epilepsy?”

Tang Yinglong shook his head. ”There really isn’t, I can guarantee it. Director Wang, please take good care of this boy.”

Director Wang nodded. ”Rest assured, I’ll certainly give him my full attention.” After a brief pause, he continued, ”Since you’re relatives, would you be willing to handle notifying his family?”

”Leave it to me.”

As Tang Yinglong turned to leave and make the call, Director Wang returned to Guan Bo’s bedside. Other doctors were still busy around Guan Bo.

Just then, one of the busy doctors quietly approached Director Wang. ”Director, do you think Doctor Guan... could it be... *that*?”

Director Wang’s eyebrows twitched slightly, but he didn’t turn his head, his gaze fixed on Guan Bo lying on the hospital bed. ”What ’that’ are you referring to?”

”You know... *that*.”

”Speak clearly.”

”It’s just... you know... *that stuff*. The symptoms of an overdose look a lot like Doctor Guan’s current state.”

But Director Wang immediately shook his head. ”I initially had the same suspicion because the external symptoms are very similar. However, if you examine him more closely, the internal manifestations aren’t there. Besides, his blood test doesn’t support that conclusion.”

The doctor who had asked let out an ”Oh,” then continued, ”So, is it really epilepsy? But from what we know, epilepsy usually isn’t this severe, is it? Typically, it involves convulsions, spasms, difficulty breathing, and so on. But incontinence like this... I’ve never heard of it.”

Director Wang took a deep breath. ”During a seizure, this degree of severity is indeed uncommon. The chances are very low, but it’s not impossible. However, in Doctor Guan’s case, we can now be certain there’s no hereditary history of epilepsy.”
