This Doctor Is Too Wealthy

The older doctor chuckled and asked, holding the prescription, ”Doctor Du, how should this formula be decocted? Are there any special requirements?”

Du Heng shook his head. ”No, just prepare it normally.”

”Alright, you can chat with Dr. Cao. I’ll go find someone to decoct the medicine now.”

After saying that, he left the hospital room with the other two doctors.

Du Heng wrote the prescription, and these doctors readily backed him, not even asking for a signature—a clear testament to their trust in him.

So, he didn’t rush to leave and stayed to chat with Cao Binghe, waiting to see the effects of the medication.

「At just one minute past three in the afternoon, Cao Binghe took the first dose of medicine.」

Cao Binghe kept his eyes closed most of the time due to constant pain, which intensified when exposed to light.

Because of this, Du Heng couldn’t tell whether the green color in Cao’s eyes had faded after taking the medicine.

However, even if the green color were to fade, the effect wouldn’t be immediate. So, Du Heng continued chatting with Cao Binghe, planning to check his eyes later.

Du Heng’s attention was focused entirely on Cao Binghe, but he had overlooked Wu Shengnan.

”Du Heng, are you coming or not?” This was the first time Wu Shengnan had called Du Heng by his full name since they confirmed their relationship.

Hearing Wu Shengnan’s voice, Du Heng knew he had made a mistake.

We traveled thousands of miles from home, supposedly on vacation, but as soon as we arrived, I dove headfirst into the hospital, leaving her all alone in the bustling Capital. That was really inconsiderate of me.

At this point, he couldn’t care less about Cao Binghe’s recovery; he quickly apologized and made his escape.

Wu Shengnan wasn’t truly angry, but she did have a bit of a temper.

When Du Heng found her, Wu Shengnan was pouting and refused to crack a smile, her words clipped. ”This is the studio. Here’s their price list. Take a look.”

After tossing the price list to Du Heng, Wu Shengnan turned her face away, pointedly ignoring him.

Du Heng might have been momentarily unobservant, but he certainly wasn’t clueless about her feelings.

The fact that Wu Shengnan handed me the price list means she’s quite satisfied with this studio herself.

Du Heng glanced at it, noting the prices, and was secretly astounded. Damn, wedding photos in the Capital are freaking expensive! He didn’t show much reaction and didn’t even take the list properly, instead reaching out and pulling Wu Shengnan into a hug.

Then, with a cheerful smile, he said, ”Honey, you need to make the call on this one. You know my eye for aesthetics is nowhere near as good as yours. If you think it’s good, then we’ll book it. Trusting your judgment is always the right call.”

Wu Shengnan didn’t pull her arm away but shot him a sideways glare. ”Are you saying I’m not pretty?”

My mind just short-circuited, Du Heng thought. How on earth did we get onto whether she’s pretty or not?

「At the same time, the minds of the doctors beside Cao Binghe also short-circuited.」

Just as Du Heng had predicted when prescribing the medicine, the green color in Cao Binghe’s eyes faded after one dose.

But this effect came on so quickly, didn’t it?

By now, it had only been two hours since Cao Binghe took the medicine.

”Dr. Cao, how are you feeling now?”

Cao Binghe’s eyes were open, and he slowly moved his eyeballs. ”My eyes don’t hurt much anymore, and even moving them like this isn’t very uncomfortable. Oh, and... I can see you all now.”

”You can already see?” The others’ mouths instantly dropped open.

Didn’t Doctor Du say he’d only be able to see after the second dose?

Cao Binghe was also somewhat excited, but he was trying hard to restrain himself. However, the whitened knuckles of his hand gripping the quilt tightly told everyone he was more than just a little excited.

”I can see blurry figures now, which means my pupils can perceive light. But I still can’t see you clearly.”

They quickly gathered around Cao Binghe, observing his condition closely, some checking his eyes, others his pulse. They wanted to record every single change in Cao Binghe.

「By the time work finished in the evening, Lan Changhua wore a bright smile.」

Although exhausted from a long day, his spirits were exceptionally high.

He not only attended Du Heng’s dinner party on time but also brought several of his friends, intending to introduce Du Heng to them.

Would Du Heng mind? Why the hell would he mind? Listening to Lan Changhua’s introductions, these were all experts from various hospitals in the Capital. Others would probably have to pay to arrange such a gathering. Why would I object? Am I crazy?

Not only did Du Heng not mind, but he also perfectly played the part of a junior, busily serving dishes and refilling tea, thoroughly enjoying himself.

Just as he was getting into the swing of things, the benefits started rolling in.

A prominent ophthalmology guru spoke up, ”I wonder if Doctor Du has any time tomorrow?”

Lan Changhua shot Du Heng a meaningful glance, and Du Heng immediately understood. ”I don’t have anything specific planned for tomorrow, just wandering around. Professor Zhang, please tell me what you have in mind.”

”I’d like to ask Doctor Du to help me see a patient tomorrow, if it’s convenient?”

I thought it was something else, Du Heng mused, but he wants help with a patient? This left him a little unsure how to respond.

This Professor Zhang held a position at Xiehe Hospital and was a professor at Capital Medical University.

Originally, I wanted to use Professor Zhang to make some connections, maybe attend some lectures or conferences to expand my network and lay some groundwork for the future. But being invited to consult on a patient... this is genuinely awkward. If I agree, it might seem arrogant; after all, he’s an expert, a professor, an authority in Western medicine. But if I refuse, with so many people here, and a senior making the request, it would be disrespectful. In short, this Professor Zhang isn’t Lan Changhua; our relationship isn’t close enough for casual interactions.

Seeing Du Heng’s predicament, Lan Changhua, acting as his guide and senior, stepped in to alleviate the awkwardness.

”Zhang, I have no objection if you want to take Xiao Du along to broaden his horizons, let him see the world, and help this kid meet some seniors. But if you’re planning to make him a scapegoat, I won’t stand for it.”

”What are you talking about?” Professor Zhang chuckled, shaking his head. ”Xiao Cao’s case had the entire Ophthalmology Department of the Capital stumped. Even Sir Zhang from East Hill returned in defeat. Such a difficult illness was easily resolved by Doctor Du. How can asking him to help me see a patient be considered making him a scapegoat?”

Hearing Professor Zhang, Lan Changhua quickly interjected, ”Zhang, today it was Sir Zhang’s students who returned in defeat, not Sir Zhang himself. You can’t just say things like that. Sir Zhang is a National Medical Master. If what you said reaches his ears, it’ll cause trouble for Xiao Du. Xiao Du holds Sir Zhang in high regard and has thoroughly studied his teachings. Sir Zhang also thinks highly of Xiao Du; when he left, he even invited Xiao Du to East Hill.”

When Professor Zhang heard Lan Changhua’s lengthy explanation, he knew he’d misspoken.

No matter how much he ran his mouth, Zhang Dewen couldn’t do a thing to him. Firstly, he and Zhang Dewen moved in different circles, and secondly, his own status wasn’t far beneath Zhang Dewen’s. In fact, setting aside age and the lineage of traditional Chinese medicine, Zhang Dewen’s influence might not even match his own.

But it was different for Du Heng.

Du Heng was young and a practitioner of traditional Chinese medicine.

If he offended Zhang Dewen, unless he planned to stay holed up in his little backwater town forever, his path forward would be difficult. Should he want to advance, apply for research grants or awards, or even publish a paper, as long as Zhang Dewen was alive, it would never be easy for him.

In the Chinese medicine field, the title of National Medical Master truly isn’t just for show.

It’s an honor, and obtaining it is no less challenging than becoming an academician. It involves countless unseen power struggles and the expenditure of vast resources.

Do you really think you automatically become a National Medical Master just by reaching a certain age?

Where there are people, there is Jianghu. The world of traditional Chinese medicine is also a Jianghu of people.

Just observing how the Chinese medicine field currently fails to present a united front gives an idea of how severe the internal competition and strife truly are.

The most obvious example was when Du Heng first joined Provincial First Hospital: there were more doctors with Senior and deputy senior titles than those with junior and Mid-level titles.

Why?

Benefits.
