This Doctor Is Too Wealthy

Jinzhou Maternity and Child Care Hospital, a very ’tragic’ hospital.

It claims to be a specialized hospital, but looking upwards, Jinzhou also has the Provincial Women and Children’s Hospital, and the well-known Maternal and Child Health Specialized Hospitals in the West Five Provinces.

Looking around, due to the country’s focus on women and young children, ninety-nine percent of hospitals at the same level have Gynecology Department consultation rooms and Pediatrics Department consultation rooms.

Moreover, because these hospitals are general hospitals, their facilities and equipment are far beyond what the Municipal Maternal and Child Health Hospital could compare to; the gap is exceptionally large.

Looking downwards, even Zhonghu Health Center must have a Gynecology Department to develop, let alone other better-equipped health clinics and hospitals.

If the Gynecology Department can’t make a living, can the Pediatrics Department at least get some scraps?

Dream on!

Not to mention that the Provincial Women and Children’s Hospital has monopolized more than half of the pathogens in the entire province, other large general hospitals also have specialized Pediatrics Departments. Furthermore, the Second Affiliated Hospital of JZU recently established a Children’s Hospital.

And today’s children, every single one of them is a precious treasure to their families. They’re so precious that if the sun so much as shone on them, their parents would want to blow up the sun. How could they possibly deign to consider this dilapidated Municipal Maternal and Child Health Hospital?

So, forget about drinking soup. Even catching a whiff of flavor, which shouldn’t be difficult, was out of the question for them.

To put it bluntly, the Municipal Maternal and Child Health Hospital couldn’t even get a few abortion cases.

During Du Heng’s first week on the job, he spent most of his time sitting at his work desk in a daze or vigorously rubbing his face with his hands.

Bored, bored to the point of agony.

Empty. Almost every ward in each department was empty, so empty it made one’s heart ache with unease.

When he stepped out of the office and saw those female doctors in their offices leisurely scrolling through their phones and binge-watching TV dramas, a knot of frustration formed in Du Heng’s chest.

When he walked a few more steps into the hospital courtyard and saw buildings even more dilapidated than those at Zhonghu Health Center, a bitter feeling welled up inside him.

Right now, Du Heng really wanted to find Wu Shengnan’s father and ask him if he was trying to help him or harm him.

But he quickly dismissed the idea. If the hospital’s performance and conditions were good, he figured it wouldn’t have been his turn to take this position.

If Du Heng had no ambition, and now having such a guru, soon to be his father-in-law, though he might not achieve meteoric success, steady advancement and securing some minor official post wouldn’t be an issue.

But Du Heng was an idealist who wanted to use his abilities to achieve something. This had become a headache-inducing problem for him.

Du Heng rubbed his face vigorously with both hands. He needed to find a way, at least to keep himself from being so idle.

At present, the entire hospital employed over two hundred staff members. However, fewer than forty of them actually worked each day. Even those forty only worked for three hours and rested for six.

As for those who weren’t busy, some would clock in in the morning and then disappear.

Du Heng thought, First of all, let’s start with attendance. If people really have nothing to do, they can at least do some cleaning. The Inspection Department’s equipment needs maintenance; if they have nothing else to do, they can grab a cloth and wipe down the machines.

After this idea struck him, Du Heng summoned the hospital’s first Vice Dean, Lu Guangying.

Lu Guangying, female, 42 years old, was the former Pediatrics Department Director. Her daily concerns revolved around cooking for her high-school daughter and helping her with homework.

According to Du Heng’s observations over the past week, Ms. Lu Guangying started work at 8:30 AM, left at 10:40 AM, returned at 2:20 PM, and clocked out promptly at 5:00 PM.

While at work, she would watch gourmet food videos for an hour, college entrance examination lectures for an hour, research national university rankings for an hour, international university rankings for an hour, and then spend an hour drinking water, using the restroom, and chatting. This cycle repeated daily.

”Deputy Dean Lu, I heard that your daughter is taking the college entrance examination this year?” Du Heng asked, smiling politely at the slightly impatient Deputy Dean Lu.

”Yes, she’ll be taking the exam in June. It’s killing me.”

”There’s less than a month and a half left; time is indeed running short,” Du Heng agreed with a smile. ”The college entrance examination is a turning point in life, so we must really support our children.”

”Isn’t it? The closer my daughter gets to the college entrance examination, the more anxious I become. I’ve even started having insomnia these past few nights.”

”How are your child’s grades? I know a few very good high school teachers. Would you like them to help your child with some extra tutoring?”

”Really? That would be great!” Lu Guangying’s expression finally brightened a little. ”My child’s grades are really worrying me. With the college entrance examination so close, she’s only scoring around 400 points. Dean, are the teachers you know reliable?

I’ve found so many tutors for our child, each bragging about how amazing and capable they are, claiming to be outstanding teachers from the Attached Middle School or First Middle School. But after spending all that money, my child’s grades haven’t improved at all. They’re all a bunch of liars.”

Around 400 points? Du Heng thought. Why the hell are you looking at university rankings every day then? With this score, she’ll be lucky to get into any university at all. What’s the point of looking at rankings?

”I’ll ask around for you, and then I’ll give you their contact information. With a final push during this period, there should be some improvement.”

”Thank you, Dean. That’s really too much trouble for you.”

Lu Guangying’s attitude improved considerably, and she became much more enthusiastic towards Du Heng.

Du Heng chuckled. ”It’s all for the children.” He paused for a moment before continuing, ”Actually, Deputy Dean Lu, I asked you here today because I have a few questions.”

As soon as he finished speaking, Lu Guangying’s expression immediately shifted. ”Dean, I only became Vice Dean last year. There are some things about the hospital that I’m not very familiar with.”
