This Doctor Is Too Wealthy

”Heng, where are you right now?”

”Yu Zhu? I’m just wandering around with nothing to do. What’s up?”

”My stomach feels uncomfortable. Could you take me to the hospital?”

Du Heng’s mind instantly cleared. He suddenly remembered that Liao Yuzhu’s due date seemed to be around this time.

As he started the car, he asked, ”Okay, where are you now?... Your brother’s house? Then wait for me; I’ll be right there. By the way, where are your brother and sister-in-law?”

”They went to the Capital. They said they’d be back soon, but it’s been a week, and there’s no sign of them returning at all.” Liao Yuzhu’s voice carried a hint of resentment towards her brother and sister-in-law.

Du Heng also felt quite helpless. His own sister was about to give birth, yet the two of them still had the leisure to go traveling. It was unbelievable.

Rushing to Liao Quansheng’s house, after a simple check, Du Heng understood that Liao Yuzhu was about to give birth. He then quickly helped the nanny get Liao Yuzhu into the car and rushed to the hospital.

On the way to the hospital, Du Heng felt very uneasy. He’d recently begun to feel as if he were jinxed, particularly when it came to childbirth. It seemed that every delivery he was near ended up being a difficult labor. He was almost afraid to go.

Once at the hospital, after settling Liao Yuzhu in, Du Heng immediately retreated downstairs, hoping that by staying far away, he wouldn’t affect Liao Yuzhu.

Besides, Liao Yuzhu had a nanny with her, so even if a problem arose, she could contact him.

Downstairs, Du Heng immediately called Liao Quansheng.

”Liao, what are you doing? Don’t you know your sister’s due date has arrived?”

As soon as the call connected, Du Heng spoke, his voice full of urgency.

However, Liao Quansheng on the other end sounded even more frantic. ”Isn’t that what you’re there for? With you, the Divine Doctor, by her side, could our sister possibly not be well taken care of? I have some urgent matters here. I’m hanging up now. I’ll rush back in the next couple of days.”

Du Heng grew anxious. ”Don’t hang up yet! If you and your wife can’t make it, then call your parents and have them come take care of Yu Zhu.”

”Alright, I’ll call them right now. But don’t expect too much from them; they’re currently spending the winter in Hawaii, and it’ll take them two or three days to get back. Okay, I see who I was waiting for. I have to hang up now.”

He saw someone? Who did he see? Du Heng didn’t understand, but listening to the busy tone from his phone, he felt a surge of anger that was truly hard to suppress.

No wonder Liao Yuzhu used to be so wild and rebellious; with parents like these, and this family background, not playing around would have been letting them down.

Du Heng grumbled a bit, but he couldn’t really stay here and take care of her himself. That wouldn’t be justifiable by any means.

After thinking for a moment, Du Heng had no choice but to dial Liao Yuzhu’s elder sister’s number again.

Fortunately, he had treated her elder sister’s child before and still had her contact information; otherwise, he really would have had to handle it himself.

”What? She’s giving birth today? Wasn’t her due date still a week away? Okay, I’ll come over right away.”

Liao Yuzhu’s elder sister answered the phone, said only that one sentence, and then immediately hung up, not giving Du Heng a chance to say anything more.

However, she arrived very quickly, reaching downstairs at the hospital in half an hour.

When Du Heng saw Liao Yuzhu’s elder sister, who was also heavily pregnant, he instantly understood why Liao Yuzhu hadn’t called her. This one was also pregnant.

”Doctor Du, how is Yu Zhu now?”

”She’s in a hospital room upstairs. I’m not very clear on the specific situation right now.”

Liao Yuzhu’s elder sister said ”Oh” and then very warmly invited him, ”Then, Doctor Du, let’s go up together.”

Du Heng hesitated for a moment but still declined the suggestion. At times like these, it’s better to be a little superstitious, he thought. It’s always better than something actually going wrong.

At 12:12 PM, Du Heng had just returned from buying lunch for everyone when he heard the good news: Liao Yuzhu had given birth to a boy.

This was the happiest news Du Heng had heard in a long time. Even when Wu Shengnan had told him last night that they should start dating, it hadn’t made him as happy as this news.

When Du Heng reached the door of the hospital room, the thought of his troublesome affliction made him involuntarily stop in his tracks.

He had intended to just take a look from the doorway, but he couldn’t withstand Liao Yuzhu’s elder sister’s enthusiasm; she practically pulled and dragged him into the hospital room.

And as soon as he entered the hospital room, Du Heng felt the corner of his mouth begin to tingle warmly—he wasn’t sure if it was psychological.

But when he reached up to touch it, the blister he half-expected wasn’t there.

Looking at the wrinkled baby before him, Du Heng couldn’t help but think of Zhao Xinfang, that thin yet stubborn young man. If Zhao Xinfang could be standing here at this moment, his face would surely be filled with a sweet smile. What a pity.

Du Heng looked again at the tiny little person before him, and a slight curve appeared at the corner of his lips.

Just then, Du Heng received a call. His eyes flickered, and then he turned and left.

The Third Hospital. It was a place Du Heng wasn’t particularly eager to set foot in, especially at a time like this; he would have much preferred not to come. However, the matter mentioned in the phone call compelled him to go. The key thing was, he himself wanted to make this trip.

Outside the emergency ward of the Third Hospital, Doctor Su stood beside Du Heng. ”Doctor Du,” he said, ”the patient hasn’t eaten anything at all recently. Moreover, the infections in her abdomen and eyes have reached an uncontrollable state. Calling you today was truly a matter of last resort. I hope you can understand.”

Du Heng sighed. The bit of resentment he held towards Zhao Xinfang’s mother had already dissipated with the passage of time and Wang Shuqiu’s departure. It was just that, coming here again, Du Heng still felt it was such a waste for Zhao Xinfang.

Half an hour later, the door to the emergency ward opened, and the Emergency Doctor walked out.

After glancing at Du Heng, he spoke directly to Doctor Su, ”Doctor Su, your patient could not be resuscitated and has died. Please contact the family quickly.”

Doctor Su expressed his thanks to the Emergency Doctor, then turned to Du Heng. ”Doctor Du, what do you think about this?”

Du Heng remained silent, his gaze fixed on the gurney parked at the entrance of the Emergency Room.

Du Heng wanted to go up and lift the white sheet to see what this woman looked like in her final moments. But in the end, Du Heng abandoned the thought.

Doctor Su asked again softly, ”Doctor Du? Doctor Du?”

Du Heng turned to Doctor Su and smiled. ”You can handle it according to normal procedures.” After saying that, he turned and left.

Du Heng walked away decisively.

He felt that, starting today, he could say goodbye to the past.

But Doctor Su was dumbfounded. His purpose in calling Du Heng here was to have him sign for and claim the corpse as a family member.

But seeing Du Heng’s resolute stride, his hopes were dashed once more.

Sigh. I’ll have to contact the police station and the Civil Affairs Bureau, he thought. It seems my work for the past half a year has been for nothing again.

After leaving the Third Hospital, Du Heng drove directly to the Criminal Police Brigade.

”Can you leave work early today?”

Wu Shengnan was very happy that Du Heng had actually come to pick her up.

Upon hearing Du Heng’s question, she immediately stood up and started gathering her things. ”Our leader is considerate of me being injured. Today doesn’t count as an official workday, and I wasn’t assigned any tasks, so I can slip away early.”

After packing her things, Wu Shengnan looked at Du Heng with a smile. ”Are we going home or going shopping?”

The corner of Du Heng’s mouth lifted slightly. ”We’re going to the hospital.”

”The hospital?” Wu Shengnan was a bit puzzled. Who’s sick that we need to visit? Or is he going to have me get another check-up?

”What for?” Wu Shengnan asked, a little shyly linking her arm with Du Heng’s. She smiled reservedly at passing colleagues by way of greeting but didn’t release his arm.

”To see a child.” Du Heng didn’t refuse Wu Shengnan’s intimate gesture.

And since he didn’t refuse, he had to explain things clearly. He would definitely look after Zhao Xinfang’s child in the future. This had nothing to do with Wang Shuqiu; it was only because of Zhao Xinfang, that pitiable young man. However, since it was also connected to Wang Shuqiu, he couldn’t let Wu Shengnan harbor any suspicions or feel unhappy about it.
