This Doctor Is Too Wealthy

With the death of Qi Cai and the last look in Qi Cai’s wife’s eyes, the nightmare in Du Heng’s heart slowly receded. He finally didn’t have to struggle every day with whether he was right or wrong.

In the following period, he gave up on the matter of seeing patients in the outpatient service and focused entirely on his research project on stroke paralysis treatment.

It was only when he started on the matter of preparing his paper that he realized he could treat paralysis, but it couldn’t be written down on paper. It was too scattered and disorganized.

There was no problem with the overall direction. However, when it came to the details of treatment, such as what medication to use or the dosage, there was absolutely no fixed time. It was necessary to perform a personal check-up on the patient, and a comprehensive analysis of pulse and symptoms was needed to determine what medicine to use, what not to use, and the dosage.

Compared to the two broad-directional papers he wrote last year, this detailed research project was really exhausting Du Heng.

After locking himself in the office for three days, he only came up with a title: ”On the Diagnosis Characteristics and Medication of Hemiplegia Caused by wind-phlegm.”

Du Heng decided not to start with stroke paralysis but instead break down the pathogenesis of stroke paralysis into individual items. Each of these items would then be further divided into several subcategories, so every type of treatment could be explained clearly.

Originally, he planned to solve the project with just two or three papers. But after doing the math, Du Heng realized it would take at least twenty papers to make his ideas clear.

So when would this 5,000 yuan project ever end?

As he was feeling dejected, Li Jianwei, his graduate mentor, called him.

”Xiao Du, all your paperwork is done. When you have time, come over, and we’ll go together to the school.” Li Jianwei’s tone was full of relief and barely concealed joy.

The matter he had cherished for a year had finally come to pass; Du Heng became his graduate student as he had wished, even being admitted as a continuous student.

Although it was a pity that he was not a full-time graduate student, considering Du Heng’s actual situation, this result was the best both sides could accept.

These days had been rough, but knowing that his graduate student issue was resolved, Du Heng felt a bit of happiness. ”Thank you, Teacher. I’ll be there tomorrow.”

Listening to Li Jianwei’s happy laughter on the other end, Du Heng looked at the manuscript with only a few large characters in his hand and told Li Jianwei about his approach, ”Teacher, am I being too detailed? Is this not good for subsequent matters?”

Unexpectedly, Li Jianwei laughed even more happily and louder upon hearing Du Heng’s words. ”What you are doing is right. Research should be meticulous—the more detailed, the better. You have grasped the essence of research.”

Du Heng frowned. ”But this is too troublesome.”

”Not troublesome at all,” Li Jianwei quickly reassured Du Heng. ”Just write it according to your thoughts. If you can publish it in core Journals, we won’t have to change the research project but can directly apply for funds with it. The more detailed your research results, the more funds we can apply for, and the greater our influence in this field.”

Li Jianwei really considered Du Heng one of his own, patiently instructing him, ”What do you rely on when you graduate as a graduate student? Isn’t it your research content and high-quality papers? What do you rely on for your promotion later? Isn’t it still high-quality papers? Similarly, if you want to have authority in the entire industry and have everyone believe and follow your methods, you also need a large number of research reports and disease records of actual treatments.”

Du Heng was stunned for a moment, then asked blankly, ”Teacher, can that really work?”

”Of course it can,” Li Jianwei replied confidently. ”You can even break it down further.”

Du Heng didn’t understand the academic circle, but he knew that following Li Jianwei’s advice would never be wrong. If he succeeded, Li Jianwei would definitely benefit. Since they had no conflicts of interest from any perspective, Li Jianwei had no reason or motive to harm him.

Finally, Li Jianwei added, ”Xiao Du, if you really produce multiple quality papers, you can help your fellow students secure positions at better hospitals when they graduate. After all, ’many hands make light work, and no man is an island,’ wouldn’t you say?”

Du Heng understood that this meant using his papers to build relationships and curry favors.

He was not a petty or ungenerous person, and when the time came, if there were enough papers, Du Heng wouldn’t mind sharing some.

”Oh, by the way, the interviews for the full-time graduate students I’m supervising are starting. If you have time, come and help me screen them.”

Du Heng laughed and declined, ”I’m your student too, Teacher. I can’t do that, no way.”

Li Jianwei also laughed. ”Don’t play dumb with me. The students we recruit this year will be assigned to you to supervise after they enroll.”

”Please don’t do that, Teacher. I have senior brothers above me. Let them share your burden. I’m just a newbie; I’m not qualified enough.”

”Xiao Du, you’re being too modest, to the point of shamelessness. Of all the students I’m currently supervising, which one would dare to consider themselves your senior? Is there any among them you haven’t taught? Besides, you’re still my teaching assistant. Even though you’re enrolled as a student, your status as a teaching assistant hasn’t been revoked.”
