This Doctor Is Too Wealthy

The patient’s mother’s mood at this moment was truly like a roller coaster. She had finally heard that her son was physically fine, and she wailed out loud with relief. But before she had time to rejoice, she was immediately informed that her son had a mental illness.

With this emotional upheaval, she almost blacked out and collapsed.

Listening to Du Heng babbling about Hearts and spirits, she had a vague understanding, but she knew clearly that no matter how nicely Du Heng put it, her son had a mental illness.

Now, she just wanted to know one thing, ”Doctor, can my son’s illness be cured?”

Du Heng didn’t know what the patient’s mother was thinking, but he simply followed her question, saying, ”It was discovered in a timely manner, so the problem isn’t too significant. After taking medicine for a few days to relieve uneasiness of mind and nourish his blood, he will be fine.”

”Thank you, Doctor. Thank you, Doctor.”

That it was curable and the problem wasn’t significant—these were the words the patient’s mother most wanted to hear.

Du Heng offered a few more words of reassurance and then left the hospital room with Li Jianwei.

Li Jianwei walked beside Du Heng, looking at him with eyes full of satisfaction and pride.

”Xiao Du, you’ve improved again,” Li Jianwei suddenly said with emotion.

Du Heng was momentarily taken aback by Li Jianwei’s praise. Wasn’t that just an ordinary treatment? The condition wasn’t difficult; it was just that the way the illness presented was rather beyond common logic.

”Teacher, why do you say that?”

”Superior physicians treat illnesses before they manifest. Middling physicians treat illnesses that are about to manifest. Inferior physicians treat illnesses that have already manifested. Our ancestors in traditional Chinese medicine classified us doctors into levels long ago.

And more than seventy to eighty percent of us doctors spend our entire lives stuck in the ’inferior physician’ category. Look at the famous doctors nowadays—which one of them hasn’t become famous for treating diseases that have already manifested?

Those who can truly reach the ’middling physician’ level are few and far between. And today, you’ve done it.”

Li Jianwei felt very emotional. Treating manifested illnesses—illnesses that have already occurred—many of our peers are at this stage. Whoever has a higher skill level in treating these gains a greater reputation in society. But treating impending illnesses—illnesses that are about to occur—that’s a skill many doctors today lack. Even he himself, in his own area of expertise, hadn’t even touched the threshold of this domain. As for some doctors, himself included, when they explain conditions to patients, it’s usually just a routine talk for preventive purposes, not because they’ve genuinely reached that stage of foresight. As for the highest level, ’a great doctor treats illnesses before they manifest,’ well, that’s mostly just something one hears about and doesn’t expect to see. Even the ’Preventive Treatment Outpatient Service’ in his own Chinese Medicine Department, to put it bluntly, is also just a preventative outpatient service and has nothing to do with that ideal.

Being praised so intensely by Li Jianwei, Du Heng’s mood suddenly improved considerably.

Back in the office, Du Heng wrote a house to relieve uneasiness of mind and nourish blood, listing Ginseng, Poria, sojutsu var, Salvia, and many other herbs.

Li Jianwei took it and glanced over it. ”Xiao Du, this house of yours treats the Heart, Spleen, Stomach, Lungs, and Liver simultaneously; it’s not just for relieving uneasiness of mind and nourishing blood.”

Du Heng smiled and explained, ”Teacher, my reasoning is this: the Heart is the ’solitary ruler.’ If it’s not protected by the Pericardium, the spirit might ’leave the hall’ and depart. If the Spleen, Stomach, Lungs, and Liver are treated concurrently, they provide support to the Heart. This way, Heart-blood is more easily generated, and the Heart-spirit will naturally become vigorous.

Following this line of treatment, the patient should feel at ease with one dose, their spirit settled with the second, and be healthy enough for discharge after ten doses.”

Li Jianwei smiled. ”Holistic and concurrent treatment—this house of yours is good. Alright, let’s proceed with this house.” He then took the house to the doctor’s office.

When he returned, seeing Du Heng idly scrolling on his mobile phone, he proactively asked, ”I heard your job hasn’t been arranged yet?”

”Yes, they said I’m ’to be assigned otherwise.’” Du Heng had come to terms with it. At worst, he’d give up this authorized job and just resign. He could go to Provincial First Hospital or open his own clinic; either would be better than his current situation. Besides, if things really didn’t work out, he could go to the Capital. Lan Changhua and Li Chengzu still had hooks out for him, trying hard to reel him in. As for his ideals, he’d think about them later.

”Have you considered coming to Provincial First Hospital? I mean, a full-time position,” Li Jianwei asked casually.

Du Heng replied without thinking, ”I’ll wait another week. I promised Wu Shengnan’s father. If there’s still no news by then, I’ll consider coming to Provincial First Hospital.”

”Alright, take your time to think. With your skills, your departure from Shanghu District would be a loss for those leaders there. They’ll regret it.”

”Yes, let them regret it to death.”

Du Heng chuckled along.

Just as he was about to resume playing with his mobile phone, a call reminder popped up. He glanced at it; surprisingly, it was Li Qin, whom he rarely contacted.

”Big star, what made you think of calling me?” After all the recent turmoil, Du Heng had loosened up considerably and was no longer as reserved as before.

”Du Heng, is Liao Quansheng your friend?” There were no pleasantries, no small talk; as soon as Du Heng finished speaking, Li Qin’s roar came through the phone.

Du Heng’s mind went blank for a moment. ”He is my friend, what happened?”

”He’s a lunatic! Come and get him immediately, or I’m calling the police!” Li Qin sounded exasperated and furious on the other end of the phone.

Du Heng was even more puzzled. ”What happened?”

”What happened?! My arm has been healed for two or three months, and he actually told me to put it back in a sling! He wants me to advertise your—what is it—’Whole Body Divine Ointment’ and ’Supple Scar Removing Cream’ in front of reporters, saying my recovery was entirely due to these two kinds of medicine! Tell me, is he insane or what?”
