This Doctor Is Too Wealthy

”Grandpa, have you missed me?”

Upon entering, Wu Shengnan hopped and skipped inside, happily holding Sir Wu Zhong’s arm, leaving Du Heng lingering by the doorway.

Looking at the familiar golden pillars, Du Heng felt a bit restrained. He didn’t expect to visit again with a changed identity.

However, every time Du Heng saw the ostentatious nouveau riche decoration in Sir Wu Zhong’s home, he felt uncomfortable.

”Come in, Xiao Heng. What are you doing standing at the doorway?”

Wu Shengnan’s mother walked over beaming, looking very approachable—a stark contrast to the grace and elegance of their first meeting and the panic of their second.

It really seemed like meeting a different person every time.

Du Heng reluctantly called her ”Auntie,” put down the gifts he was carrying, and walked in.

He had originally expected to find Sir Wu Zhong alone but was surprised to see the whole family present; it was clearly a full family banquet.

However, the family was easygoing, and since they were all acquainted, conversation flowed smoothly. Most importantly, the elders present didn’t have a habit of lecturing the younger generation, which made Du Heng feel at ease.

What he dreaded most were elders who loved to meddle in his work and personal life. While Wu Shengnan’s grandfather and father were certainly qualified and influential enough to do so, Du Heng would definitely feel uncomfortable if they did. Thankfully, their family didn’t have that tendency.

Dinner concluded in a cheerful and harmonious atmosphere. Just as Du Heng thought the evening was over and he could go home with Wu Shengnan, her father called him into the study.

Du Heng felt uneasy. Was his father-in-law going to teach him a lesson?

However, as soon as they sat down, Wu Shengnan’s father asked, ”I heard your work hasn’t been going smoothly lately?”

”It’s okay.” Du Heng was a bit unclear about this guru’s intention.

”I’ve heard about your situation,” Wu Shengnan’s father continued. ”You need to trust the organization. They won’t let our comrades be wronged or suffer injustice.”

Du Heng touched his nose.

Is he trying to help me vent?

Du Heng didn’t know how to respond. Disagreeing would make him seem unenlightened, while agreeing would feel hypocritical.

Fortunately, Wu Shengnan’s father didn’t seem to expect an answer. Instead, he asked, ”Do you have any plans of your own?”

”I haven’t thought it through,” Du Heng sighed.

Wu Shengnan’s father stared at him. ”Oh?” he said. ”So, ’haven’t thought it through’ means you’ve actually had some ideas. Can you share them?”

Du Heng felt there was no need to hide his intentions from Wu Shengnan’s father, so he stated directly, ”I’m thinking of resigning.”

”Resign?” Wu Shengnan’s father didn’t seem surprised. ”What will you do after resigning? Open a clinic, go to Provincial First Hospital to work with your teacher, or start a company selling medicine with your friend?”

Du Heng’s heart tightened, and he looked seriously at Wu Shengnan’s father.

Though his personal affairs might seem insignificant to this man, having them ’stripped bare’ really didn’t feel good.

”I probably won’t start a company. I’m not cut out for it, and I don’t know how to run one. My greatest skill is diagnosing and treating patients. I want to use my skills to help as many patients as possible, freeing them from the clutches of illness and allowing them to enjoy a healthy, unrestricted life.

”As for whether to open a clinic or go to Provincial First Hospital, I haven’t decided yet.”

Du Heng dropped his caution, his voice a bit dry as he shared his thoughts.

Although Wu Shengnan’s father, as a parent, had the right to investigate his background, it was still uncomfortable to have it laid out so bluntly.

However, Wu Shengnan’s father didn’t seem to mind the change in Du Heng’s tone and said lightly, ”It’s quite understandable that you have some negative thoughts after suffering such a significant injustice.

”But as I just said, you need to trust the organization; they will surely give you a satisfying resolution.

”Moreover, I think with your abilities, leaving the organization to run a clinic on your own would be a venture with great potential, and your achievements would undoubtedly be considerable.

”However... ”

But what?

Eventually, Du Heng received a lecture on ideology from Wu Shengnan’s father, who made him understand that only within the organization could he truly realize his ideals and ambitions, and only within the collective could he better utilize his strengths and advantages.

If Wu Shengnan hadn’t come in to call them, Du Heng believed this guru could have talked until the next morning without repeating a single point.

Finally, Wu Shengnan’s father said, ”Think of this period as a vacation, a good time to rest. Young people shouldn’t rush; just wait for news.”

Watching Wu Shengnan and Du Heng leave, Wu Shengnan’s father sat down beside his own father. ”Dad, regarding this matter, as your son, I have to say a few words. Look at the significant consequences your statement has caused.”

Seeing his son admonishing him, Sir Wu Zhong fumed, his beard bristling and eyes wide, ”How can this be my fault? A young doctor, a Dean for only one year, can afford a car worth over 500,000 yuan. Who wouldn’t have second thoughts? I just asked someone to look into it. What’s the problem with that?”

Wu Shengnan’s father sighed. ”And what did the investigation find? He’s young, yes, but he has skills and intelligence. Earning some money isn’t a big deal for him. Besides, daring to drive such an expensive car so openly shows he’s not afraid of any investigation.”
