This Doctor Is Too Wealthy

The two of them were overcome with drowsiness. As soon as Du Heng finished speaking, they hurried to the dormitory.

Without stopping them, Du Heng turned his head and called Wu Buwei over. ”You keep a close eye on things here. If there’s any problem, give me a call. Let Yu and Xiao Li get some sleep.”

Wu Buwei nodded. ”Don’t worry, Senior Brother. I’ve been watching since last night.”

Du Heng was a bit surprised. ”Why have you been watching all this time? Weren’t Yu and Xiao Li always here?”

”You used 200 grams of aconite. I didn’t trust anyone else to decoct the medicine, so I decocted it myself every time. As for the hospital room, I kept a closer watch at night, and after you left in the morning, I snuck off to get some sleep for a while,” Wu Buwei said in a low voice.

Du Heng couldn’t help but laugh. Only Wu Buwei would talk about slacking off in front of his leader; you probably couldn’t find anyone else in this Health Clinic who would do that. ”Alright, then you watch. I estimate he should be able to urinate by this afternoon. Once urination starts, reduce the dosage of aconite by 50 grams, but don’t change the method of use.”

”I’ve got it, Senior Brother.”

When Du Heng returned to his office, the more he thought about it, the angrier he became. The illness itself hadn’t been that severe. Yet, due to a moment of carelessness, the patient’s life had nearly been lost. No matter how you looked at it, this was a clear-cut medical accident.

Although he had managed to reassure the patient’s wife, they didn’t quite understand the implications. Plus, now that the patient had been saved, this matter would probably be smoothed over.

However, the responsible parties and those who disregarded the rules in the hospital room yesterday had to face some form of punishment.

”Dean Ruoge, if you’re not busy, please come to my office... Yes, it’s rather urgent.”

After making the call, Du Heng tapped his fingers on the desktop, his eyes narrowed as he pondered something.

「Meanwhile, in the doctors’ office」

A discussion about Du Heng had begun.

Han Yujian, holding a thermos cup, sat calmly in his chair and sighed, ”I always knew the Dean’s use of medication was exquisite, but I never imagined he could be so bold. It truly proves the saying, ’great skill makes one bold’.”

”Generalized cardiomegaly, ventricular premature beats, Heart Function Level IV, Heart Failure Level III, complete damage to heart, liver, and kidneys, and an internal infection... I’ve only recently graduated and haven’t seen much, but I genuinely can’t understand how he could be saved. The medicine the Dean used... it was miraculous!”

”And that’s not all! A few days ago, there was that patient with a cerebral hemorrhage. I heard it was a brainstem hemorrhage—a situation that would have been fatal in anyone else’s hands. But the Dean, with just a few needles, managed to secure him a chance for surgery at the Municipal First Hospital.”

”Unfortunately, the Municipal First Hospital’s capabilities weren’t up to par, and the patient was unlucky and didn’t make it. If he had survived, it would have been another miracle to the Dean’s credit.”

”Aconite is amazing, a divine medicine for covering yang and rescuing of counterflow. But for underlings like us, it’s best we just observe. We should never even think of using such a large dose. It could really kill someone.”

”Hehe, I admire the Dean’s medical skills, but I admire his Benz even more.”

At this point, a doctor about the same age as Han Yujian remarked, ”Then you should spend more time reading books and practicing your basic skills. What’s the use of just being envious if you don’t have the skills? Without skills and qualifications, earning only three to four thousand a month, you can’t even afford the gasoline for a Benz.”

Initially, everyone had been flattering Du Heng. Han Yujian, mindful of his own standing, had gradually fallen silent. But hearing this, his eyes narrowed slightly.

Zhang Shuai, 37 years old, Western Internal Medicine, transferred here last November when Du Heng went to the Capital. Listening to this, that old boy wants to stir up trouble. What does he mean, ’can’t afford the gasoline’?

As expected, no sooner had the doctor finished speaking than the young man who had praised the Benz immediately chimed in, ”That’s true. The Dean’s Benz is said to cost over 500,000 yuan, and he paid in full. I don’t even have money for a down payment, let alone gasoline. It’s better if I don’t even dream about it.”

Zhang Shuai immediately followed up with a laugh, ”That’s why I’m telling you to improve your skills and qualifications. As long as you have those, a good car and a big house will naturally follow.”

The young man, oblivious, went right along with Zhang Shuai’s words, ”Forget it. I’ll never reach the Dean’s level, and I’m not dreaming of it. Besides, even if I did reach that level, I couldn’t afford a Benz on a doctor’s salary. I still need to support my family and get married.”

Zhang Shuai chuckled. ”Don’t be discouraged. Look at the Dean; he’s not much older than you, and he’s bought one.”

”The Dean’s salar—”

”AHEM! AHEM, AHEM!” Han Yujian coughed loudly, cutting off the young man’s words.

When the young man looked over, Han Yujian stood up, cup in hand. ”Xiao Zhou, it’s time for the patient’s treatment.”

Watching Han Yujian leisurely walk out, even the most oblivious person would have realized something was amiss.

In front of so many people, I actually dared to speculate about the Dean’s income! Am I tired of living comfortably, or do I actually think the Health Clinic will be desperate to keep me after I pass the professional practice exam mid-year?

Glancing at Zhang Shuai, who had dug the pit for him, he quickly got up and caught up with Han Yujian. ”Teacher Han, thank you. Otherwise, I...”

”Alright, just go do your job well.”

The young man smiled gratefully and hurried away from the gossip-ridden place.

Han Yujian watched the young man’s retreating back and chuckled softly. When Zhang Shuai first arrived, it was said he was aiming for the position of section chief of the Medical Affairs Department. However, Du Heng wasn’t around at the time, and with the New Year approaching, the matter was put on hold. Now, it’s almost mid-March, and there’s still no movement, with Vice Dean Yu Haiting still concurrently holding the post. That old boy is starting to get antsy. I don’t like being an official myself, and I don’t care who gets that position. But now it seems this Zhang Shuai, that old boy, is too unscrupulous, bullying a young doctor who isn’t even officially on staff yet. If someone like him gets promoted, it definitely wouldn’t be a good thing.

Han Yujian carried his teacup and made a round in the hospital rooms, then leisurely strolled to the backyard. Passing Du Heng’s office door and hearing Cui Guanghaia’s voice inside, he went straight into Lu Zhongjiang’s office with his cup.

「Later that afternoon」

As work was about to end, Lu Zhongjiang bumped into Wu Buwei, who was walking from the hospital rooms to the backyard. ”Dr. Wu, how is the patient now?”

”He had a bowel movement this afternoon and has passed about 1,000 milliliters of urine intermittently. He looks much more comfortable overall.” Wu Buwei’s face was full of smiles. ”He just urinated and wouldn’t let his wife help him; he insisted on going to the toilet by himself.”

”Really? He can get out of bed and walk already?”

”He was just trying to act tough. After just one trip, he collapsed onto the bed, gasping for breath, complaining loudly of palpitations and discomfort.”

Han Yujian, who had approached, also laughed. ”He’s a bit too impatient. He should be better when getting out of bed tomorrow.”

Wu Buwei hesitated for a moment, then said, ”Dr. Han, I can’t chat any longer. I need to report to the Dean, get something to eat, and then go to bed early. I was up for half the night last night and didn’t sleep well.”

”Dr. Wu, you’re so responsible,” Han Yujian said. ”The Dean should arrange a position for you. I think the Medical Affairs Office would suit you well.”

”Dr. Han, you’re joking. I’m really not cut out for that kind of work. I’d rather just diligently learn medical skills from my Senior Brother.”

”You’re being too modest. How do you know you can’t do it if you haven’t even tried? If you’re too embarrassed to ask yourself, I can put in a good word for you with the Dean.”

Wu Buwei quickly waved his hands. ”No, no, I’m really not cut out for that kind of work.”

”Dr. Wu, don’t be in such a hurry to refuse,” Han Yujian persisted. ”Just think about it. You can at least give it a try. There’s no harm in trying, right? What do you say?”

After saying this to Wu Buwei, Han Yujian stepped aside to let him pass. ”Alright, I won’t bother you anymore, Dr. Wu. Go get some sleep quickly. I can see your eyes are practically shut.”
