This Doctor Is Too Wealthy

He resolved to follow his heart, yet he also knew he must respect Wu Shengnan.

However, after Du Heng finished explaining the situation, Wu Shengnan’s arm, linked with his, tensed slightly.

She knew Zhao Xinfang and was even more aware of the relationship between Zhao Xinfang and Wang Shuqiu, as she had personally handled that case.

She felt deep sympathy for Zhao Xinfang. Even now, whenever she recalled the incident, she still felt that Zhao Xinfang had been too impulsive back then.

Yet, considering the circumstances at the time and the fact that Zhao Xinfang suffered from a mental illness, she could only sigh.

Regarding Du Heng’s current decision, she believed it had to be connected to Wang Shuqiu. Yet, she couldn’t find a suitable excuse to prevent Du Heng from caring for the child, an act that would inevitably lead to him re-establishing contact with Wang Shuqiu.

And she wasn’t the type of woman to create a scene without reason. For a moment, her spirits dampened.

Seeing Wu Shengnan’s current demeanor, Du Heng felt satisfied with his decision. It was a good thing I was upfront about it. If I hadn’t said anything and she’d found out on her own, her face would probably have fallen to the floor.

”Don’t look so down,” Du Heng said. ”I’m taking care of this child purely out of consideration for Zhao Xinfang.”

As he spoke, Du Heng sighed softly. ”Let me tell you something else. Zhao Xinfang’s mother—the woman who was blinded in one eye and had half her liver pierced—passed away just two hours ago.”

Wu Shengnan froze for a moment, then suddenly understood the implication behind Du Heng’s words.

If it weren’t for this child, the Zhao family would essentially have been annihilated.

Du Heng gently squeezed Wu Shengnan’s hand. ”Rest assured, since I’ve told you about this so openly, I obviously wasn’t planning to hide it from you. It’s not the complicated mess you’re imagining. Otherwise, I would have definitely kept it secret and not let you find out, right?”

It was unclear whether Wu Shengnan had truly come around, but after Du Heng finished speaking, she smiled at him. ”Oh, I’m not that small-minded. Besides, you’re just looking after a child. I won’t let my imagination run wild.”

With that said, she tightened her arm around his again, and they walked towards the car together.

After visiting the child and Liao Yuzhu, Du Heng and Wu Shengnan finally began to enjoy themselves like a typical couple, strolling through shops and having a meal.

However, as Wu Shengnan’s foot had only recently healed, she couldn’t stand or walk for extended periods. Just as she was starting to get into the swing of things, Du Heng had to firmly escort her home.

Back home, the massage to activate blood circulation, which Du Heng hadn’t intended to perform again, was resumed due to Wu Shengnan’s wordless protest.

「The next morning.」

After seeing Wu Shengnan off to work, Du Heng freshened up and headed to the Chinese Medicine Department of the Provincial First Hospital.

Today, he was scheduled to resume his outpatient consultations.

However, no sooner had he arrived at the hospital than Li Jianwei gave him a surprise. ”Xiao Du, this is Liu Mu. Before the semester officially begins, you’ll be mentoring him. Teach him well.”

Liu Mu was the student with the second-best interview score, the one who seemed a bit shrewd.

Li Jianwei had acted with surprising decisiveness; the admission notices hadn’t even been issued, yet he had already brought the young man over.

”Hello, Senior. My name is Liu Mu. I look forward to learning from you.” Liu Mu, appearing very deferential, promptly greeted Du Heng as soon as Li Jianwei finished his introduction.

Du Heng smiled and nodded in acknowledgment before asking Li Jianwei, ”Teacher, isn’t that rather a long time before the semester officially starts? Classes don’t begin until September; that’s a full five months from now.”

The unspoken message was clear: the duration was too long, and he wasn’t keen on supervising him.

Liu Mu was sharp and immediately caught Du Heng’s reluctance. Li Jianwei had already given him a heads-up the previous day, and Liu Mu had also done some discreet digging into what kind of person Du Heng was and his standing within Li Jianwei’s department. Hearing Du Heng’s implied refusal, Liu Mu’s face instantly paled.

Li Jianwei, who knew Du Heng’s disposition well, wasn’t at all surprised by his words. After all, Du Heng hadn’t been particularly impressed with either of the two students interviewed from the outset.

”It won’t be for that long,” Li Jianwei said. ”Just have Liu Mu accompany you when you’re seeing patients in the outpatient clinic or doing your rounds in the wards. Let him assist you and run some errands. When there’s downtime, you can have him copy prescriptions.”

Li Jianwei chuckled. ”Besides, this young fellow is quite capable when it comes to writing papers. You have that thesis you haven’t finished, don’t you? Just hand it over to him; let him help you with it.”

Du Heng sounded slightly exasperated. ”Teacher, I already have so many people shadowing me—Xiao Su, Xiao Sun, and Gu Ping from the Gastroenterology Department. You know that. If Liu Mu joins as well, my consultation room will be packed. There’ll be no space left for the patients.”

He then shook his head decisively. ”Let’s just drop the idea. He should have an assigned training hospital by now, shouldn’t he? Let him go there and get some proper practical experience. I can supervise him when the semester officially begins and I have more availability.”

Du Heng’s direct refusal caused Liu Mu’s face to turn an even more ghastly white. He couldn’t comprehend why Du Heng seemed to dislike him so intensely.

Li Jianwei, however, remained unfazed. He simply let out a hearty laugh and said, ”You don’t need to worry about that. Xiao Su and Xiao Sun won’t be joining you in the outpatient clinic this semester. They both need to return to university to focus on completing their graduation theses.”

Du Heng stared at Li Jianwei, utterly speechless. He hadn’t anticipated Li Jianwei having orchestrated everything so meticulously.
