This Doctor Is Too Wealthy

Li Qin’s voice was incredibly agitated.

But Du Heng was rather dumbfounded.

He suddenly remembered what Liao Quansheng had told him two months ago—that somewhat ’crazy’ idea. He hadn’t expected the kid to actually go through with it in the Capital!

Before Du Heng could even process it, Li Qin started shouting on the phone again, ”I didn’t call the police out of respect for you, but get him out of here! He’s already interfering with my work!”

After saying that, he directly hung up. He sounded genuinely furious.

Du Heng really couldn’t figure out what on earth was going through that kid’s mind. He had no choice but to call Liao Quansheng.

However, as soon as the call connected and before Du Heng could speak, Liao Quansheng started babbling non-stop. In the end, he even urged Du Heng to come to the Capital and help persuade Li Qin.

Dammit, Du Heng actually found himself somewhat swayed. Looking at the disconnected call, his gaze was a bit vacant.

After a long moment, he snapped back to his senses and contacted Lawyer Zhou to arrange a meal. He wanted to ask about the progress of the medicine manufacturing.

In the private room of the restaurant, Lawyer Zhou handed Du Heng a thick stack of documents. Du Heng felt his head spin. He couldn’t make sense of these documents, mainly because he simply didn’t understand them.

”Lawyer Zhou, it doesn’t look like an equity investment, does it?”

”Correct. You won’t be involved in the production, manufacturing, or sales of the medicine.” Lawyer Zhou’s baby bump was quite prominent. In another three months, she would be a mother.

Du Heng touched his nose, put down the incomprehensible documents, and looked at Lawyer Zhou in confusion. ”If I’m not investing, then how does this involve me?”

”I’m setting it up as a patent licensing agreement for you. Fees will be calculated based on the ex-factory quantity. Things like profits and dividends will have nothing to do with you.”

Seeing Du Heng’s puzzled eyes, Lawyer Zhou continued to explain, ”You mentioned you don’t understand business, and you have neither the time nor the inclination to get involved in such things, so this is the simplest method.

This model of cooperation benefits both of you. It also prevents any financial entanglements between you and your friend, so it won’t affect your relationship.

As for profits, dividends, and the like, to be honest, for a non-business person like yourself, it’s very unreliable. They have a hundred ways to make their company show no profit and a thousand ways not to pay you any dividends.”

Du Heng opened his mouth, but just as the words were about to come out, Lawyer Zhou continued, ”I know what you’re going to say—something about your relationship with Mr. Liao. However, I’ve looked at their shareholding structure. Mr. Liao isn’t the only shareholder in the pharmaceutical factory; there are many others.

Even if Mr. Liao is willing to give you dividends and profits, the others might not agree.”

Du Heng considered this and slumped back into his seat. He truly didn’t understand the convoluted details involved.

He racked his brains but still couldn’t figure out how, if the products were sold, he himself would see no profit.

Leave professional matters to the professionals. He wouldn’t concern himself with the rest.

Lawyer Zhou noticed that Du Heng had stopped talking and continued with a smile, ”The patents for your two prescriptions have been approved. The pharmaceutical factory is also expediting the application for production batch numbers.

I’ve inquired around. There are some influential people among the pharmaceutical factory’s shareholders, and they’re already in the final stages of the process.”

Du Heng asked in surprise, ”The patent applications were that fast?”

”Fast?” Lawyer Zhou voiced her strong dissatisfaction. To her, Du Heng’s comment seemed to imply their work wasn’t hard. ”Ever since you spoke to me, our law firm submitted the materials back in January. We later supplemented them with extremely detailed data. Plus, my people have been regulars at the patent office, treating officials to countless meals. How could it not be fast?”

Du Heng had only asked casually. Hearing Lawyer Zhou’s protest, which implied he thought their work wasn’t hard, he quickly apologized.

They’d worked so hard for you, and here you were doubting them. That was truly out of line.

After seeing Lawyer Zhou off, Du Heng looked at the message from Professor Lan Changhua on his phone. Suddenly, the thought of going to the Capital resurfaced.

That evening, he picked up Wu Shengnan. During a lull in their dinner conversation, Du Heng tentatively asked, ”Nannan, what would you say if I went to work in the Capital?”

Wu Shengnan paused mid-meal. ”You’re going to work in the Capital? Doing what?”

”Still be a doctor, of course. What else can I do?” Du Heng chuckled softly, carefully observing Wu Shengnan’s expression.

Wu Shengnan put down her chopsticks and stared fixedly at Du Heng. ”If you go to work in the Capital, what about me?” As she spoke, her expression became utterly aggrieved. ”Are you trying to break up with me? Do you want to end things?”

What kind of nonsense was this?

Du Heng’s temples throbbed. He had no choice but to explain, ”Look, I don’t have a proper job right now, and I can’t just keep idling around like this either.

You know I stayed in the Capital for two months last year. Professor Lan Changhua really valued me and still messages me. Besides, the national-level project he applied for has been approved, and he wants me to participate. That’s why I wanted to ask for your opinion.”

Wu Shengnan wasn’t listening to any of that. She just pouted, looking at Du Heng. ”If you go to the Capital, what about us? You just want to break up with me.”

Du Heng felt helpless. Why couldn’t the two of them ever be on the same wavelength?

”I don’t have any such intention. You’re overthinking things.”

”Then tell me, if you go to the Capital and I stay in Jinzhou, what kind of situation is that?”

Looking at the pitiful Wu Shengnan, Du Heng found it impossible to connect this version of her with the woman from his memories.

He scratched his head in frustration. ”How about this: I’ll go check it out first. If it really works out for me to stay in the Capital, you can come join me.

If it’s not suitable, I’ll come back and work in Jinzhou. How does that sound?”

Even with Du Heng’s assurance, Wu Shengnan didn’t brighten up. ”What would I do in the Capital? I can’t just be a housewife. I couldn’t bear that kind of life.”

Du Heng felt that bringing this up now had been a mistake. ”It’s just an idea; I haven’t decided anything yet. I’ll go take a look first, and we can decide after that.”

Wu Shengnan pursed her lips and nodded. ”I can go to the Capital with you, as long as I can continue being a police officer.”

Du Heng immediately got a headache. Never mind him, even her old man probably couldn’t get her transferred from Jinzhou to the Capital as a police officer, right?

Doesn’t that just mean she doesn’t want to go?

Seeing that this topic was about to devolve into a dead-end argument, Du Heng quickly changed the subject. There was no need for them to fight over something so uncertain.

However, they also agreed that he would take advantage of this period to go to the Capital to check things out, treating it partly as a trip.
