This Doctor Is Too Wealthy

Their child being out of danger and looking as normal as any other child put Yang Wei and his wife at ease, and they were profusely thankful to Du Heng. They did not dare to trouble Du Heng to escort them home.

Although the couple kept expressing their gratitude with jubilant and excited expressions, the tiredness evident between their brows didn’t lessen at all.

”Alright, quit thanking me. While your child is sleeping soundly, you two should also get some much-needed rest. I managed to sneak in a nap last night; you two haven’t closed your eyes at all,” Du Heng told them.

Upon seeing the couple’s excitement, Du Heng quickly waved his hands for them to calm down. ”Your child will likely be fussy during the day, and you will have a tough time. Stop this fuss and go get some sleep. That’s the most pressing matter for now.”

Just as Du Heng was about to leave, You Fang hurriedly asked, ”Doctor Du, should we not give the child any more medicine during the day?”

”No need. Once the child has absorbed all the medicine from his system, he will be fine.”

Du Heng didn’t dare to let the child take any more medicine. He truly felt the amount given last night was more than enough.

As soon as Du Heng returned to his dormitory, he fell into bed to sleep.

But this kind of intermittent sleep was the worst. He definitely felt sleepy; his eyes were dry and uncomfortable, and his spirits were low. But when he lay on the bed to sleep, he couldn’t close his eyes. His mind was full of random thoughts, even clearer and more jumbled than when he was fully awake. He was half-asleep, half-dreaming.

Du Heng had no idea how long he had lain in bed, feeling terribly uncomfortable. Deciding he wasn’t going to sleep anymore, he simply got up, freshened up, and headed to the consultation room.

At that time in the consultation room, Wu Buwei, Han Yujian, and a group of TCM specialists were studying the house Du Heng had prescribed yesterday.

”Doctor Han, I have a question,” a young doctor, his eyes full of confusion, asked after carefully rechecking the prescription in his hand. ”You just mentioned that gypsum, moutan, and puccoon used together can have soothing, cooling, antipyretic, analgesic, and anticonvulsant effects, and can replace rhinoceros horn. But why would the Dean add flea to this house?”

”Flea also serves to extinguish wind, calm fright, and stop convulsions. Isn’t adding it here a bit repetitive?”

While scrutinizing his copy of the prescription, Han Yujian listened intently to the young doctor’s question.

”As for the use of flea, here’s what I think. If you look closely, the dosage of each medicinal ingredient in this house is about one-fifth of the adult dosage.”

”Therefore, the Dean must have considered that the low dosage would affect the overall efficacy, so he added flea to compensate for the other ingredients’ insufficient effects in extinguishing wind and stopping spasms.”

Hearing Han Yujian’s explanation, everyone else present tentatively agreed. It made sense to them.

After all, the patient at hand was an infant merely over twenty days old. An overdose might put a heavy burden on the child’s organs and could even lead to poisoning.

As everyone was slowly accepting Han Yujian’s explanation and contemplating how to medicate a child, Wu Buwei quietly cleared his throat.

”HMM. I have a different opinion,” he said, glancing nervously at Han Yujian. Ever since Han Yujian had thrown him under the bus a few days ago, Wu Buwei had been on guard around this middle-aged man. Now that he was about to refute Han Yujian’s statement, he was worried this old boy would be displeased, thinking Wu Buwei was disrespecting him. But considering Han Yujian’s explanation might mislead others, he felt he had to speak up.

Han Yujian showed no signs of embarrassment, anger, or displeasure as Wu Buwei had imagined. Instead, he turned to Wu Buwei with considerable interest. ”Dr. Wu, why don’t you share your thoughts? What I said earlier was just my personal conjecture and isn’t necessarily correct.”

Wu Buwei was unsure if Han Yujian was being sincere, but he glanced at him apologetically before addressing everyone. ”Flea is a key medicinal ingredient for clearing heat, detoxifying, extinguishing wind, and calming fright—especially its effect of calming fright. This is a medicinal property that other ingredients lack. Moreover, it can treat bites from all venomous snakes and insects, as well as malignant sores. Its detoxification ability is the strongest; it can eliminate viruses that have entered the bloodstream, protect the heart, clear the mind, and it possesses a unique spasm-stopping effect.”

As he spoke, he peeked at Han Yujian again out of the corner of his eye. What I’m saying now is almost completely different from his explanation. I hope he doesn’t get upset because he feels he’s lost face. But seeing Han Yujian listening as intently and calmly as ever, Wu Buwei finally felt a sense of relief. I’m being too sensitive, he thought, a self-mocking smile touching his lips before he continued. ”The baby yesterday presented with a syndrome of wind-heat Violating Lung, internal accumulation of phlegm-heat, and wind stirred by extreme heat, with pathogenic factors invading the pericardium. This is what we refer to as acute shock. If not treated in time, this condition can lead to sequelae such as epilepsy, mental retardation, and dementia. The child presented with an excess syndrome and a heat syndrome; with pathogenic factors invading the pericardium, there must be an accumulation of heat poison in the body. Therefore, using flea for its detoxifying properties in this case is, I believe, perfectly appropriate.”

”So, in my opinion,” Wu Buwei concluded, ”flea isn’t added to this house to supplement moutan and puccoon. Instead, it’s used as the primary medicinal ingredient of this house.”
