This Doctor Is Too Wealthy

”Five years of undergraduate study, and they could be so far off on diagnosing a common cold. What use are they? Moreover, from the two questions before, it is evident that they did not study earnestly during their internship last year, nor did they take their internships seriously. Otherwise, how could they have completed a year of internship at the hospital and still not be able to diagnose a cold correctly? I don’t like their working attitude.”

If Li Jianwei asked, Du Heng would certainly respond, and his response would reflect his genuine feelings. Du Heng’s answer, however, left Li Jianwei somewhat at a loss for words. At this moment, he suddenly felt that having a student like Du Heng made it difficult for him to feel as relaxed as before in his role as a professor. Yet, if anyone suggested that Du Heng be expelled, Li Jianwei would undoubtedly fight tooth and nail for him.

Li Jianwei clicked his tongue. ”It’s a case of choosing the best from a mediocre bunch; it’s not like we can’t accept either of them.” He pointed to Xiao Su, who had followed him in. ”Take Xiao Su, for example. He looks quite presentable these days, seems to have his act together. But you wouldn’t know it—when he first arrived, he was honestly worse than these two kids.”

Xiao Su never expected the conversation to suddenly turn to him, and to be singled out by his ’revered’ professor, effectively being called ’all appearance and no substance’! His composure instantly shattered, and he looked utterly dejected.

Li Jianwei glared at Xiao Su, telling him to stop overreacting.

Du Heng had been feeling a bit stifled for some time, so he seized the opportunity to vent. Moreover, having worked for seven or eight years, he knew the importance of discretion.

”If I really have to choose, I’d suggest Professor, that you choose the student who ranked second in the written test.”

”Explain your reasons.”

Du Heng sighed softly. ”Two reasons. First, based on their grades. The first-place student’s advantage isn’t significant.

”Both of their professional course scores are nearly the same, and the extra points come from English and politics. To be a bit blunt, is English that useful for us studying traditional Chinese medicine?

”So, the grades are just that. If we have to choose, the second-place student’s thesis and research abilities would be more practical.

”Secondly, I assume Professor, you heard during the interview just now. Although both of them got the case analysis completely wrong, the first-place student was way off the mark. The second student, though also wrong, was at least somewhat on the right track.

”Furthermore, I believe that while it’s acceptable for a doctor to have some personal considerations, excessive self-interest is not good.”

When Du Heng finished, Xiao Su interjected, ”I also think the student who ranked second is okay. But there’s a difference of tens of points between his and the first-place student’s written test scores. Their interview performances were similar, making it difficult to make up for this difference in scores.”

Xiao Su looked worriedly at Li Jianwei and Du Heng. ”If we forcibly raise the second-place student’s score, the first-place student, who had a similar interview performance, would certainly be unhappy. But if their interview scores were the same, the overall score gap would be too wide. In that case, wouldn’t the first-place student accuse us of foul play or something? Could this be detrimental to the professor’s reputation?”

Upon hearing Xiao Su’s words, Du Heng said nothing, merely looking at Li Jianwei. All he could do was offer suggestions; the final decision still had to be made by Li Jianwei. If he truly made this decision for Li Jianwei, it would be overstepping his bounds and muddling things up.

Li Jianwei also fell silent. Xiao Su’s concerns were exactly what he was most worried about, yet Du Heng’s words weren’t wrong. He didn’t like the mindset of the student who ranked first.

Du Heng and Xiao Su didn’t disturb Li Jianwei further; deciding whom to accept wasn’t a matter to be settled in a day or two.

Just then, Du Heng’s phone rang in his pocket. He answered it and walked out of Li Jianwei’s office.

”Director Xu, what’s the matter?”

”Director Du, where are you now? Do you have a moment?”

”I’m at the school. What’s up?”

”Could you please come to the department? There’s a patient here I need you to take a look at.”

”Alright, I’ll be right there.”

Du Heng put away his phone, re-entered the office, saw Li Jianwei still silent, briefly mentioned the call, and then hurried to Provincial First Hospital.

Meanwhile, in Digestion Department 1, Xu Pinglin, the department’s two deputy directors, and several attending physicians were gathered together. They were silently examining the medical images before them.

Xu Pinglin furrowed his brow and glanced at the others. ”Everyone, please share your thoughts. We can’t just sit here and wait for Director Du to arrive.”

A doctor around Xu Pinglin’s age cleared his throat. ”Director, my opinion is that we should perform a more detailed examination on the patient. I still don’t believe this is bile duct cancer.”

Xu Pinglin looked at the doctor who spoke. ”I’d like to as well, but the patient’s condition is poor right now. It’s been three hours, and we haven’t been able to bring it under control. Instead, the vomiting and pain have intensified. Even if we wanted to run other tests, we can’t do them at the moment.”

”Director, the patient’s serum amylase test results are back. Acute pancreatitis can be confirmed, but I still have reservations about the bile duct cancer diagnosis. I still think it’s more likely the patient has acute cholecystitis.”
