Dimensional Codex System: I'm really not a cultist!

Chapter 580: Chapter 579: What You Did Was Right

Passing through the back door of the Bell Tower, Fang Zheng and Big Chin followed Madam Maria into a dilapidated fishing village. It seemed long abandoned, with barnacles densely covering the walls of the surrounding houses. The rich stench of fish was overpowering, enough to make one retch.

Amid the ruins wandered the Fishman Monsters, with the upper bodies of fish and the limbs of humans, wielding weapons in an attempt to kill any invaders from outside.

However, regrettably, it was all in vain.

In the past, these Fishmen had not been able to withstand the attacks of the Hunters, and now faced with the combined efforts of Madam Maria and Fang Zheng, they were naturally powerless to resist.

”I feel like I’m just dead weight now.”

As Fang Zheng and Madam Maria swung their weapons, advancing effortlessly as if slicing through vegetables, Big Chin, who followed behind, had entered a state of idleness. While trailing the pair, he mumbled to himself.

”Look, it’s not that we’re not fighting, it’s just that these two are too strong, we definitely can’t outdo them. And they both have a wide range of attack—see that Fishman Wizard over there, it’s about to cast a curse! At times like this, what we need to do is dodge the curse then quickly touch it with the burner and immediately dodge away......”

”Swoosh!!”

But before Big Chin could finish, he saw Madam Maria raise her weapon and point it forward, then a streak of blood-red light flew past, drilling through both the Fishman Guard and the Wizard in front of it.

”......Well, that move isn’t something we can emulate, watch out for that large Fishman over there, the anchor in its hands poses a real threat, like this......”

As Big Chin spoke, a giant Fishman on the other side roared and leapt up with the anchor in its hands, aiming to smash it down on Fang Zheng. But at the same moment the Fishman moved, Fang Zheng’s Greatsword exploded in a fiery jump slash that instantly turned the large Fishman into charred ash.

”......So as we can see, there’s absolutely no reference value......”

”What’s up with him?”

Hearing Big Chin’s muttering behind her, Madam Maria curiously turned to Fang Zheng and asked. Fang Zheng glanced back at Big Chin and shrugged.

”Don’t mind him, he’s just like that, must have a screw loose in his head.”

”Yet another Hunter driven mad by the curse.”

Madam Maria looked at Big Chin, who continued to prattle on behind them, with a sympathetic gaze.

”Look at his face, this is the fate of Hunters who have gone mad after prolonged exposure to the Blood of the Ancient God. Fortunately, it seems he still remembers his duties......I hope he can be freed from this nightmare.”

”I think he’s kind of enjoying himself right now.”

Fang Zheng turned his head to look at Big Chin, who was standing off dumbfounded against a Fishman Monster wielding a Long Spear, and shrugged. Big Chin swung his Cane Sword at the Fishman a couple of times, then quickly rolled away to dodge. Perhaps he misjudged the timing of the attack, because the Fishman Monster nearly skewered his face. Scared out of his wits, Big Chin scrambled away from the Fishman’s strike and, with a ”plop,” fell into a dry well nearby.

Even the Fishman Monster was taken aback by the bizarre scene, and immediately shifted its target to attack Fang Zheng, only to be turned into charcoal by him.

It was only then that Big Chin poked his head out of the well again and waved awkwardly at the two.

”As a Hunter, he’s quite unqualified.”

Witnessing this scene, Madam Maria couldn’t help but chuckle lightly.

”But perhaps it’s precisely because of this that he hasn’t been completely corroded by the nightmare......A Hunter’s duty is a shackle, as well as a curse. To be honest, seeing him reminds me of the old days. Back then, there were also many novice Hunters who joined with all sorts of ideas; many of them made mistakes on the battlefield, but never......such a comical mess.”

Watching the Hunter wave his weapon as he climbed out of the well, shouting, ”That wasn’t my real strength, now let me show you what I’m really capable of,” before going off to fight another Fishman Monster, Madam Maria didn’t quite know what to say.

Now she also admitted that Fang Zheng made sense; this Hunter seemed to have lost his sanity.

However, that wasn’t strange, since most Hunters gradually went mad. But they tended to become more aggressive, not like this...

”Let’s keep moving.”

Maria retracted her gaze, sighed softly, and continued to lead Fang Zheng forward. After dispatching the Fishman Monster, Big Chin also hurried to follow them.

Guided by Maria, they arrived in a cave deep within the fishing village, where the fishy smell was exceptionally strong. Moreover, on both sides of the passageway, nearly a hundred individuals knelt on the ground with heads bowed, raising their hands as if in prayer or supplication.

Strictly speaking, these individuals were no longer human.

Their faces had taken on the appearance of fish, with tentacles like those of an octopus growing from their chins. Their lower bodies had completely changed into the form of a mermaid—of course, coupled with their cyanotic skin and emaciated arms, there was nothing ”cute” about it.

Maria led Fang Zheng through the passageway to the edge of a shore where sunken ships could even be seen in the distance, and in the sky above, a sun that resembled a pupil was emitting a dim radiance.

But what caught the most attention was the corpse of an unidentified creature on the beach.

From a distance, it looked like the body of a large jellyfish or octopus. Without the support of bones, the body lay on the coast like a lump of rotten cloth.

”That is Kos.”

Maria watched the corpse, her expression sad.

”To be honest, there isn’t much we know about it, but... its curse has almost become a nightmare for all of us.”

”Gollum...”

As Maria spoke, Fang Zheng saw a part of the jellyfish skin suddenly bulge, and something began to slowly wriggle and crawl out. It resembled a skeletal humanoid creature with a pair of fins on its arms, and moreover, it was holding something that looked like a placenta upside-down.

The creature merely stood there on the shore, gazing at the distant sun.

”That is Kos’s unborn child...”

Looking at the undead before her, Maria couldn’t help but sigh.

”To be frank, I can’t even be certain if all that we’ve done...”

But before Maria could finish, Fang Zheng pressed a hand on her shoulder, interrupting her. Maria looked up in surprise at Fang Zheng, to find his face bearing an odd expression that was neither a smile nor a frown.

”Madam Maria, you were just expressing your concern about whether what you have done was right?”

”...This... Is...”

”Then let me tell you now, perhaps the Healing Church’s motives were not the best, but what you’ve done has protected this world. There is nothing shameful, nothing to regret, and you don’t have to feel remorse for it, because the things you’ve killed needed to be exterminated. I swear by the name of the Undead Squad, there are neither faults nor sins in what you have done.”

”Eh?”

Upon hearing Fang Zheng’s response, Maria was taken aback. She opened her mouth to ask something but found Fang Zheng was already gripping his Greatsword and striding towards the Orphan of Kos on the beach. At the same time, fierce flames burst forth once more from his black Greatsword.

”Come on, scum of the Abyss, let me send you back to that profound and dark place!”
