Chapter 570: Chapter 569: The Eternally Crimson Crescent Moon

Located on the second floor of the academy, leading to the lake platform, the gate was locked, but for Fang Zheng, this was clearly not a problem.

”Thud!”

Watching Fang Zheng kick open the thick wooden gate, Eileen reached out to press her forehead and sighed helplessly, she had already gotten used to Fang Zheng’s actions. Anything like a locked door was useless against him; if the door was locked, he would kick it open, if it couldn’t be kicked open, he would climb through the window, and if the window wasn’t an option, he would just make a hole in the wall...

Eileen had to admit, this was also why they could arrive at the academy so quickly.

However, this foreigner seemed to have some deep-rooted obsession with opening doors... He seemed to particularly dislike detouring to find mechanisms to open doors. According to the foreigner, well, it was a waste of time and quite boring.

”Why would I go around to the other side to open a door that I can clearly kick open? Is anyone here going to ask me to pay for it?”

Eileen had to admit, there was some sense in that statement.

But the problem was... this time the foreigner might actually have to pay.

”Um...”

When Fang Zheng kicked the door open, he then awkwardly realized that on the other side of the door on the platform, an old man was sitting in a rocking chair staring at the lake. He was wearing a thick robe, a wide-brimmed hat, and holding a long staff in his hand. Fang Zheng’s rough way of opening the door didn’t seem to affect the old man, who remained curled up in the chair, as if he had fallen into a deep sleep.

”Sorry, I didn’t mean to, I just tripped accidentally.”

”..........”

Hearing Fang Zheng’s insincere apology, Eileen silently gave him a glance and then said nothing. Fang Zheng, undisturbed by Eileen’s disdain, walked up to the old man and looked down at him.

”Are you Master William?”

”......”

The old man didn’t speak, and Fang Zheng saw that everything above his nose was covered by the wide hat, but by his looks, he was clearly not sleeping.

”I have some questions I’d like to ask you...”

Fang Zheng spoke again, but the old man just shook his head and then lifted his staff, pointing ahead.

”..........”

”..........”

Seeing the old man’s response, Fang Zheng and Eileen exchanged glances; then Eileen walked to the edge of the platform where the old man’s staff was pointing and looked down. Then she turned around and shook her head at Fang Zheng.

”There’s nothing to see here.” frёewebηovel.cѳm

”I hope you can answer some of my questions, Master William.”

”......”

In response to Fang Zheng’s inquiry, William still remained silent; he just raised his staff again, pointing ahead.

But this time, Fang Zheng didn’t care about his gesture. He just stood with his hands on his hips next to the old man, as if challenging him to a standoff.

”......”

”......”

As time ticked by, neither Fang Zheng nor the old man moved. They seemed to be engaged in a competition of patience, to see who would lose their composure and speak first.

”I mean, what are you doing?”

Under these circumstances, it was Eileen who couldn’t hold back first.

”This old man has given us a hint, maybe we should look around for any clues nearby...”

”He’s right here, not dead, can’t he just tell us directly instead of making us run around?”

Fang Zheng clearly wasn’t buying it.

”Master William,” Fang Zheng said, ”we’re all intelligent people here; don’t try to fool us. I have some questions I want to ask you, but if you’re going to pretend you can’t hear or speak, then we’ll just have to keep wasting time here. This is no game, and you’re not an NPC set with only limited responses, and I’m neither your student nor your subordinate. Don’t expect me to do something just because you won’t say anything.”

”......Heh heh......”

Hearing this, the old man finally let out a chuckle, turned his head, and looked in Fang Zheng’s direction.

”How intriguing, outsider...... Although I indeed sensed an extraordinary soul from you...... you are much more interesting than I imagined.”

”And you are just as I expected. Do all old people have this problem?”

”Maintaining a sense of mystery is a bad habit of scholars, but you are right......”

Upon saying this, Master William coughed a few times.

”......But young man...... sorry, my spirit...... it’s hard for me to engage in a long conversation right now; this world, this world is about to completely crush me. You can’t understand what I’m feeling, the sounds, the lights, everything to me is completely different......”

The old man seemed genuinely exhausted, coughing intensely after only a few words, and it took a while before he could recover.

”Well then, sorry, I’ll make it short...... Did you cause this endless hunting night?”

”......”

The old man was silent for a moment, then nodded.

”Why?”

This time, it was Eileen who could not help but ask.

”Why would you do this, Master William?”

”Because...... when the hunting night ends, the Blood Moon will rise......”

The old man’s voice was filled with fear and sorrow.

”Ancient Gods have always been in this world; we once thought they had left, but no, they have not. They are here, and there, on this side, and that side, in any place where we feel they should or should not exist. But we just cannot touch them; they watch us, just as we watch ants in a box...... Ants don’t realize our existence, because besides their antennae, they have no other way to perceive the world. Humans are the same; we are ants, we can only feel our world with our antennae......”

As he spoke, the old man’s body also began to shake.

”But when the Blood Moon rises, the power of the Ancient Gods will engulf everything...... All of Anan will become their playground, and no one can resist their power...... The curse of the Ancient Gods will mercilessly devour everyone, allowing them to struggle in pain and despair...... and then...... destruction......”

”But Anan is already on the brink of destruction now.”

Hearing Master William speak, Eileen’s face turned pale, but Fang Zheng remained quite calm.

”Forgive my blunt words, but it’s just a matter of dying sooner or later. Both cups are poisoned; one kills instantly, while the other lets you say a few last words, but after saying them, aren’t you still going to die? Since that’s the case, why not just be straightforward...... Master William, is there a way for us to escape this dream?”

”......To escape the dream, you must eliminate the curse of the Ancient Gods, defeat them...... but...... that’s almost impossible......”

As he spoke, Master William’s voice gradually grew lower.

”Impossible...... Humans cannot use the thought processes of the Ancient Gods to observe the world, and only when we use this method to understand the world can we touch the Ancient Gods, but by then, we are no longer ourselves...... Menses obstinately sought the coming of the Blood Moon, immersing himself in his unachievable ideals...... Poor child, Lawrence...... he took the wrong path, they all did.”

Master William raised the scepter in his hand again, pointing it forward.

”I utilized Rom’s time loop to seal this world. The hunting night will continue indefinitely, preventing the Blood Moon from ever arriving. It’s at the center of this lake; just kill it, and the Blood Moon will come, and the world will change completely...... I don’t know what it will become, but outsider......since you are so confident, I’ll let you try. Go, kill Rom, and then...... go find Menses. He’s delusional in trying to create Ancient Gods using the Blood Moon, his actions are doomed to fail......”

”That’s more like it, isn’t it better when we talk things through?”

After hearing William’s explanation, Fang Zheng casually hoisted the Greatsword and walked toward the edge of the platform. Seeing Fang Zheng’s actions, Eileen hurriedly stepped forward to stop him.

”Wait, wait, are you really going? What if......”

”There are no ’what ifs’, the hunting night has to end regardless, and whether or not the Blood Moon will follow...... we’ll see then. Whether for better or worse, change is always inevitable, isn’t it?”

While speaking, Fang Zheng waved his hand and then leapt down from the platform.
