Chapter 569: Chapter 568: Someone Has to Take Responsibility for Their Actions

Compared to the nightmarish Anan, Byronvis Academy seemed to be a very clean place. It was situated beside a lake, and by lifting one’s head, one could see the bright moonlight illuminating the waters, giving the academy a tranquil and serene appearance.

If it weren’t for those big-headed flies.

According to Dr. Yushefka’s account, after Lawrence had a conflict with his mentor, William, Lawrence took the students who agreed with his ideology and left the academy, leaving only a very few who still remained. But later, as the Medical Church grew more powerful, more and more students left the academy for Anan.

Now, it seemed the reality was just so. When Fang Zheng and Eileen arrived at Byronvis Academy, there was almost no one here besides the big-headed flies, nor could any corpses be seen. The entire academy looked as though it had been abandoned, but Fang Zheng was certain that he could find some clues here.

After all, this was an academy, and those people must have left behind research records.

”So... what exactly are you trying to find here?”

Eileen looked at the bookcase in front of her and couldn’t help but ask, while Fang Zheng was searching through the materials and casually responded.

”Data, records, these people must have documented their history. I need to find that stuff. At the very least, I need to understand the entire process. Maybe these materials are not exhaustive, but they are better than nothing.”

”...Here?”

Eileen inhaled sharply, looking at the wall of bookcases filled with hundreds of books... With so many books, just checking the titles to find what one was looking for would take quite some time. However...

”Alright, since I’ve come with you all the way here, let’s see what kind of secrets you’re planning to uncover.”

Eileen felt quite helpless. Although rummaging through books was not her hobby, it was still safer than going out to fight a bunch of monsters.

Fang Zheng certainly wouldn’t search around like a headless fly. The academy was so large, looking through each book one by one could take decades. However, he didn’t need to do so. He and Eileen went straight to the dean’s office on the third floor of Byronvis Academy, since any research would surely require the consent and approval of Dean William. And the most important research materials were definitely kept here.

Thus, Fang Zheng focused his search on the dean’s desk and nearby areas, while Eileen took charge of searching through the bookcases. Sure enough, before long, Fang Zheng found an experimental record in the desk drawer. Sitting on the chair, he casually flipped through the record, and soon the name of Dean William appeared before Fang Zheng’s eyes.

”...Everything we have discovered in the ruins is simply astonishing. The level of civilization of the ancient Sumerians exceeded our expectations. According to the records, the ancient Sumerians were the servants of the Old Gods. They guarded the slumbering Old Gods and gained power and blessings from them. However, the Sumerians weren’t satisfied with just that; they aspired to further sublimation, to become high-level beings akin to the very beings they once guarded... I am very interested in this. The research of the Sumerians is quite profound, but... they seem to have failed to achieve success...”

The initial records seemed normal, mostly documenting the discoveries made while excavating the ruins, and studies on the Sumerian Civilization. From the records, it appeared to be the golden age of Byronvis, with ”major discoveries” being unearthed so frequently that William complained that ”their manpower was completely insufficient to meet the needs for analysis, forcing them to recruit the most talented from among the students.”

And Lawrence was one of them.

According to William’s records, Lawrence was an outstanding student from the start, and for that reason, he was one of the first to be recruited by William to join in the excavation and research of the Sumerian Civilization. Lawrence was passionate about the work, quickly becoming William’s right-hand man, and an influential figure in the excavation process.

In this process, William and others gradually uncovered the reason for the downfall of the Sumerian Civilization. They attempted to attain sublimation through the blood of the Old Gods, aiming to become beings like the Old Gods themselves. But they failed, and though the specific circumstances were unknown, a disaster broke out in Sumer, ultimately destroying the entire civilization.

Nevertheless, it seemed William did not stop his research because of this.

”...We dissected the remains of the Sumerians and within their brains, we discovered biological tissues and structures different from that of modern humans, validating the Sumerians’ records. They could achieve a sublimation of wisdom by gaining and enhancing the ’Inner Eye,’ allowing humans to ultimately reach the ’domain’ of the ’gods’ in terms of thought, and obtain knowledge surpassing human civilization and achieve true evolution! This is precisely what we need! This is exactly what we’re pursuing, the ultimate goal of mankind!”

Same old pattern.

Shrugging his shoulders while looking at the records, Fang Zheng wondered why there were always people who loved taking shortcuts. Logically speaking, humans could indeed ascend to the next level, but it had to be a gradual process. Could you expect a monkey with a computer to learn programming?

The subsequent records were much as Dr. Yushefka had described. William injected himself with the Blood of the Ancient God excavated from the ruins and successfully obtained Spirit Sight, acquiring the knowledge he had dreamed of that surpassed humanity. However, at the same time, William finally became aware of the dangers involved.

”...The power of the Old Gods is too immense. Such power is not meant for humans to bear. I have lost my eyes, but I have gained many more... I can see everything I want to see, but this is not what I hoped to witness... Humanity is still too young, too tender. We are like children who have not yet grown, not yet ready to face the real world.”

The Blood of the Old Gods has not changed us; it has merely drawn out the beastliness that is inherent within us. The cruel and terrible side that is innate in humanity. If we are to become deities, then we must face the reality that we are not perfect creations, we are far from being the most pride-worthy, perfect entities in the world of the gods. On the contrary, we are nothing but flawed and defective. Through a long evolution, humanity has buried the darkness within their souls with rationality and intelligence, but this darkness has never disappeared. When we face the truth, it means we must accept it all.

The Sumerians brought us profound lessons with their civilization. We must put an end to all this, before it is too late...”

If it were to end there, then what followed would have been a HAPPY END. Unfortunately, since Fang Zheng found himself in the midst of a nightmare, he knew that what Dean William did was of no use. Sure enough, in the following records, William seemed quite disheartened.

”Lawrence disagrees with me; we have nothing more to say to each other. We both know well the tremendous impact the Blood of the Ancient Gods has on its users. But Lawrence is not willing to stop. He believes that if one can use reason to control the bestial desires unleashed by the Blood of the Old Gods, one can ultimately become a deity. And... in the ruins under Anan, he found a living Old God... the Daughter of the Cosmos, Ibitaris, seems to be its name. With it, Lawrence had the capital to proceed with his research on the Blood of the Old Gods, and I... I’m powerless to stop it all...”

Plainly speaking, this is just a dispute between two people on whether becoming a god should be about increasing strength or intelligence.

Upon reading this far, Fang Zheng finally had a clear understanding of the matter. In the beginning, whether it was William or others, they all longed to obtain a means for human evolution and ascension from the remnants of the Sumerian civilization. William succeeded by chance, but after seeing the truth, he became intimidated and decided to seal it all away.

Lawrence, however, did not intend to stop there. He chose a different path, one that continued to inject the Blood of the Ancient Gods, attempting to forcibly control the berserk nature provoked by the blood, in order to reach the path of becoming a god.

As far as things go, Lawrence has failed as well.

However, according to the records, the reason Lawrence and the others could continue to use the Blood of the Old Gods for ”Blood Healing” was because they found a surviving Old God in the ruins...

But William’s records do not stop there. What he wrote afterward is even more shocking.

”... Lawrence and his group have made the wrong choice. I can hear it, the mad wails and pitiful cries; they shouldn’t have done this! They will suffer the most dreadful curse, but I cannot sit idly by doing nothing. All this started because of me, so at least... I must do something. The Blood Moon should not rise again, so I have had to make a choice, forgive me, Rom...”

That was the last record left by William. At the end, Fang Zheng saw a series of messages.

”When the red moon hangs low, the line between man and beast will become blurred. When the deity descends, a blessed womb shall bear a Godchild. I have buried all these secrets in the lake, but the nightmare will never end...”

That was pretty much it.

Fang Zheng closed the materials in his hands and rubbed his forehead before standing up. Sensing Fang Zheng’s movement, Eileen, who was standing by, asked.

”How is it? Have you found some clue?”

”More or less.”

Fang Zheng looked at the materials in front of him and shrugged his shoulders.

”At least we can be sure that the reason this Hunt Night can’t end is because of the ghost Dean William has pulled. As for why he did it, it seems to be because Lawrence and the others have made some erroneous act... Anyway, it’s no use delving into these old sesame rotten millet issues now. There’s obviously only one place we need to go to next.”

”You mean...”

Glancing at Eileen, Fang Zheng said.

”Master William said he had hidden all the secrets in the lake, so next, let’s go take a look by the lakeside.”
