Dimensional Codex System: I'm really not a cultist!

Chapter 485: Chapter 484: The Onslaught of the Demon Beast Tide

When everyone rushed to the city walls again, the first thing they saw was the smoke and flames in the distance.

”Damn it!”

Seeing this scene, Wells furrowed his brow, his expression grim. He hadn’t expected a Demon Beast Lord to emerge so quickly. Under these circumstances, it seemed that his strategy would have to be adjusted yet again.

”Immediately order all soldiers on the first defensive line to evacuate! Everyone, return to headquarters for defense!”

”Is this really okay?”

But at that moment, hearing Wells’ order, Fang Zheng raised another question.

”If we abandon the first defensive line, relying just on this place, it might be very difficult to hold off all the Demon Beasts. Moreover, with the enemy deploying a Lord-Class Demon Beast, if an accident were to occur, the entire Northlands could be in trouble.”

Through Wells’ introduction just now, Fang Zheng had realized that the design of the Northern Fortress was actually a ”double filtering” mechanism. This meant the first defensive line was the foremost ”filter net,” capable of blocking most of the Demon Creature assaults. However, some Demon Creatures would still get past the first defensive line, but would then be annihilated at the second defensive line.

Simply put, the main responsibility of the first defensive line was to hold off the numerous but weaker Lesser Beasts. The second line was to withstand those fewer in number but stronger High-Rank Beasts.

But if the first defensive line was completely abandoned, then more would slip through the ”gaps” of the Northern Fortress into the Land of Order. Fang Zheng still remembered the pack of Demon Wolves he had encountered after coming back from the world of ”Edge of Tomorrow.” At that time, had it not been for his intervention, this pack of Demon Wolves would have almost destroyed a village.

”Currently, we don’t have enough manpower, and that can’t be helped.”

Wells knew this truth just as well, but he truly had no other solution; a lack of manpower was something that neither strategy nor individual strength could combat. If it were just about killing the present Demon Beasts, then Wells’ strength as a Knight Captain was more than enough. However, the problem was that their enemies were not limited to just this group, and in fact, just how many Demon Beasts there were was still unknown.

In such a situation, what Wells could do was to conserve strength and buy time, waiting for reinforcements from the Sanctuary. And if even he was forced to act personally, it would mean the entire Northern Fortress was truly in great crisis.

”If that’s the case, then leave it to me.”

Fang Zheng understood what Wells had said, but after observing the terrain here, he still felt that abandoning the first defensive line was unwise. From the bird’s eye view, the entire Northern Fortress layout was shaped like a tightly stretched gourd; the location of the first defensive line was at the gourd’s narrowest mouth. Because this area was narrow and flanked by insurmountable cliffs, it could withstand the onslaught of Demon Beasts. If this line were completely overwhelmed, allowing the Demon Beasts to flood in would only make defending even harder.

”You?”

Hearing Fang Zheng’s words, Wells was somewhat astonished. If Fang Zheng were one of his soldiers, Wells would have definitely reprimanded the young man for being delusional. But recalling the information in the Sanctuary documents, he hesitated for a moment.

Since the Sanctuary said this young man was reinforcements, then let me see what he is capable of...

”Fine! I give you ten minutes! If you can’t hold the first defensive line in ten minutes, I will immediately issue the order for everyone to evacuate!”

”Leave it to me with confidence.”

Facing Wells’ stern gaze, Fang Zheng smiled slightly. He then leaped from the several tens of meters high city wall, looking forward to what lay ahead. There, the brilliant red flames had already lit up the originally dark sky and land. Even under the protection of the Light of Order, the situation ahead seemed not very good.

”Tina, bring Tanji, everyone get ready, let’s set off immediately, follow me!”

”Yes, Brother Fang Zheng!!”

Upon hearing Fang Zheng’s command, the girls, who had been lethargic just a moment before, were now invigorated. Tina leapt out of the vehicle and flung open the trunk of the landing vehicle; soon, a golden, shimmering with azure radiance, Star Spirit machine flew out—observing its shaky appearance, it seemed not much better off.

This Star Spirit technology is just inferior!

Glancing at the wobbly Tanji, Fang Zheng shook his head, then swiftly gestured with his hands and dashed forward. All he had was this one planetary landing vehicle, and he was unwilling to lose it here. Rather than drive it to the front lines, it was better left behind, especially since the first line of defense was only about a kilometer away from the Northern Fortress, a distance that meant Fang Zheng and Tina and the others didn’t need long to reach it.

But even so, the situation up ahead was not at all optimistic.

By the time Fang Zheng and the others reached the first line of defense, it had once again descended into chaotic battle. Although the Light of Order still protected the tall city walls, its brightness had significantly diminished, the reason being...

”—————!!”

In Fang Zheng’s eyes, a pitch-black light beam whistled from afar, striking the Order Light Wall like a battering ram. With each hit of the light beam, the already tenuous Order Light Wall flickered like a faulty light.

And the culprit attacking the light wall was...

”What is that? Is that a Stage Five Intestinal Creature? Does this world have Intestinal Creatures too?”

It was not strange for Tina and Natsuse to have such questions, as the more powerful a monster infected by Chaos Magic, the more bizarre its form—well, to a certain extent, it really did not differ much from Intestinal Creatures.

The source of the light beams was a giant beast, large as a hill, which in appearance resembled an ogre, with a huge, golden eye in the center of its forehead. On either side of its robust body were thick, muscular claws, like those of a tiger or lion.

However, due to the erosion of Chaos Magic, its skin was a nauseating ink-green, and one could even see continuously winding and twisting tentacles and bristles on it.

”...this thing is just nauseating to look at...”

Even Fang Zheng found it hard to look directly at the monster in front of him; although it was indeed a Lord-Class demon beast, its appearance... it was unbearable—simply observing it felt like it had Lord-Class destructive power. As a game’s boss, it probably wouldn’t pass the review and would need to be sent back for a reset.

But now was not the time to worry about that, because just then, the huge Lord demon beast roared once more. Immediately, its forehead’s solitary eye suddenly widened, and quickly, another light beam shot out of the eye, striking the Order Light Wall.

But this time, the barrier of light finally could not completely block the Demon Beast Lord’s attack. The pitch-black light beam ruthlessly bore a large hole through the barrier, then directly struck the city wall. Accompanied by the sound of the explosion, the already unstable wall suddenly collapsed, and simultaneously, the eager monsters, like a flood finding a breach, surged towards the gap.

”We cannot let these things in!”

Seeing this, Fang Zheng immediately extended his hand, and the Vampire Greatsword reappeared in his grasp.

”Natsuse, Tina, Midori, Nobiru, leave this place to you, block those creatures! I’ll go handle the boss!”
