System Came When the Doctor was Thirty

The fact that Director Lei from Xiangya Hospital is going to be the dean is something Lu Cheng is aware of. However, whether Director Tan will be promoted to vice dean and which other vice deans there will be, Lu Cheng is not clear on.

Because he hasn’t specifically looked into this information.

”Uncle Xiao, are you going back to Long County today?” Lu Cheng asked.

”Yes, I’m heading back soon. I’ll call you after Mu Leng and I arrive, and we can talk privately then.”

”By the way, you said you work in Long County. How do you keep in touch with Director Tan? By phone?” Xiao Zhaoxi, being quite experienced, immediately picked up on the hole in Lu Cheng’s words.

Lu Cheng replied, ”Director Tan should have returned by now.”

Xiao Zhaoxi pondered for a while, ”So that means Director Tan came to Long County before and met with you, which is why you asked him for a favor?”

”Uncle Xiao, can I explain this to you in person?” Lu Cheng responded.

”That’s fine, anyway, there’s no rush right now.”

”Let’s leave it for now and talk later,” said Xiao Zhaoxi.

...

Lu Cheng walked through the door with his phone in hand, and Tian Hui immediately noticed Lu Cheng smelled of alcohol, ”You drank quite a bit again today? Why are you drinking so often lately?”

Lu Nanjia then got up quietly to prepare some sobering tea for Lu Cheng.

Lu Nanjia wasn’t unconcerned about Lu Cheng’s health, but as a man, he understood better the need for Lu Cheng to build connections.

The family can’t help much, so does Lu Cheng just rely on smooth talk to get by in the hospital?

”I just drank a little. Some teachers came over, and I couldn’t refuse,” Lu Cheng said.

Tian Hui’s tone was sharp: ”Teachers, more important than your Uncle Wei’s brother-in-law, Director Du?”

Lu Cheng said, ”Mom, don’t worry about it, Director Du basically doesn’t get involved with these people’s drinking affairs.”

”I’m going to rest for a while. Uncle Mu Leng will be back soon, and I need to see him!”

As soon as Lu Nanjia heard Mu Leng’s name, he came out, ”What’s Mu Leng up to? If he’s trying to get you to drink, I’ll call and scold him.”

”Is he really doing this at such a bad time?”

After all, since Mu Leng was previously in debt to him, Lu Nanjia wasn’t particularly courteous with Mu Leng.

”No, we’re just discussing some things,” Lu Cheng said.

”What matters? Do you need my help?” Lu Nanjia asked.

Mainly because it involved Mu Leng, Lu Nanjia thought he could be of assistance.

He is Lu Cheng’s father, not someone who shirks responsibility; inability is unavoidable, but when there’s an opportunity to contribute, he would give everything he has.

”No need, Dad.”

”Mom, don’t be so angry, we drink just for leisure, not to get dead drunk.”

Lu Cheng continued, ”How about I give you a shoulder massage?”

”Am I angry? I’m worried about your health, you’re a doctor yourself, don’t you know alcohol harms the body?”

Lu Cheng was silent for a while before he spoke, ”Didn’t you not know that skipping breakfast is bad for your health?”

”According to the healthiest diet, eat less chili, less salt, and avoid lard. What’s the point then?”

Lu Cheng knew he couldn’t reason with Tian Hui about grand principles, so he started from the trivial aspects of life.

”Alright, alright, you little monkey have grown up; I can’t win in an argument with you, I’m uneducated,” Tian Hui rolled her eyes.

Tian Hui used to love spicy food, but now she has to control her intake of chili, and if the food is too bland, she can’t eat it at all.

It’s a lifelong habit, and changing it really makes life seem dull.

...

Two and a half hours later, Mu Leng and Xiao Zhaoxi spoke at the entrance to Yuelu Avenue’s residential area, and Mu Leng called Lu Cheng to come downstairs.

While on the road, Lu Cheng roughly went over the sequence and logic of events in his mind.

Director Tan Zhongyuan was merely being polite at the dining table, saying he could contact the emergency department director, and just like that, he could make the contact.

It’s just that Lu Cheng still didn’t know why the emergency department director at Xiangya Hospital had such influence that would make Xiao Zhaoxi rush back to Long County from Ji City.

”Uncle Mu, Uncle Xiao,” Lu Cheng said when he reached by the car, opening the rear passenger door.

Mu Leng started the car with a step on the gas: ”This is the Uncle Xiao I often mentioned before, and he’ll also be your leader in the future!”

”You better do well; I promised Director Xiao I would vouch for you, and if you misbehave, I’ll personally deal with you.”

”Thank you, Uncle Mu.” Lu Cheng nodded immediately.

Xiao Zhaoxi said, ”Mu Leng, don’t be so formal. We’re not at work now.”

”Today, I had something urgent to discuss with Lu Cheng.”

”Do you want to go out and handle something?” Xiao Zhaoxi suggested.

Lu Cheng politely declined, ”Uncle Xiao, maybe another day. We just had dinner, if we drink more now, it’ll be embarrassing.”

”Did you just drink with Director Tan? How did you get in touch?” Xiao Zhaoxi seemed impatient and immediately began questioning.

”Director Tan and Professor Zhou Yuhui from the hand surgery department came to Long County, and Professor Tong from hand surgery, who is visiting our hospital, recommended me,” Lu Cheng replied.

”So Professor Tong recommended you to Director Tan, and then Director Tan drank with you? It can’t be that simple, right?” Xiao Zhaoxi’s eyes darted around thoughtfully.

Mu Leng said, ”Cousin, what do you mean by this?”

Xiao Zhaoxi replied, ”Mu Leng, let me put it this way, when it comes to county directors, they pretty much have free rein to whoever gets the job, since everything’s basically like that.”

”As for the directors in our hospital, not just anyone can control them easily. If something happens, it’s hard to handle without some clout.”

”Xiangya Hospital is a deployment unit, the directors here are not just department heads, the resources and connections they hold may not necessarily be inferior to many.”
