System Came When the Doctor was Thirty

The surgical room in the surgery building is brightly lit in the early hours, with circulating nurses methodically wheeling various instruments.

Instead of the frantic anxiety found in the emergency department, there was more exhaustion visible on their faces.

Due to the intervention of Professor Chen Song and Professor Tong Yuan’an, the rescue process is over, and the only thing left is a ”planned elective surgery,” so everyone can shed their panic.

After a slight hesitation for a few seconds, Lu Cheng decided to first go to operating room 5, where Tong Yuan’an was located.

The surgical rooms in the surgery building are twice as luxurious in terms of area, furnishings, and the number of operating rooms compared to the emergency surgery room.

”Swoosh~”

When Lu Cheng stepped on the foot-operated automatic sensor door, many eyes simultaneously looked over, but after briefly seeing that it was Lu Cheng, no one spoke.

Instead, Tong Yuan’an glanced at Lu Cheng with some frustration, while continuing to handle the relatively critical vascular suturing, he asked, ”Xiao Lu, how is the flexor tendon in Zone 2?”

Lu Cheng precisely recalled, smoothing his eyelids slightly: ”The flexor tendon on the distal forearm of the index finger is longitudinally torn at the positions of one o’clock and five o’clock, and also at ten o’clock and eight o’clock.”

”It’s a mess!” Tong Yuan’an didn’t curse, but gritted his teeth and took a sharp breath.

Lu Cheng approached the surgery table, scrutinized the surgical progress, and said: ”Teacher Tong, you’ve finished handling the tendons over here, I’ll go next door to take a look and see if there’s anything else I can assist with.”

Lu Cheng explained cryptically, not wanting to boast about the excellence of his tendon stitching technique.

From Tong Yuan’an’s process of handling the severed finger, Lu Cheng understood why Professor Zhong specially emphasized the order of handling finger replantation during his last visit to Union Hospital.

Hand surgery is a specialty, and having studied and deliberated over surgical techniques seriously, surgeons become instinctively familiar with the procedure and sequence, even before advancing past the learning stage, Lu Cheng was still at the door.

”Once you’re done, come to room 3, there’s a half-limb replantation over there. I’ll attend to the vascular situation first!” Tong Yuan’an instructed.

Tong Yuan’an was upset because the emergency surgeries were piling up, and after finishing his current surgery, he still had a half-limb replantation waiting for him.

Now there’s an additional tendon revision surgery, meaning he’ll have to handle more procedures and race against time.

No surgeon prefers to rush through surgeries!

Lu Cheng had already turned around, ready to head out of the surgical room to the sensor door, but hearing Tong Yuan’an’s words made him hesitantly turn back:

”Teacher Tong, how about you go to the emergency surgery room directly after this? I can take care of the half-limb replantation?”

Tong Yuan’an instinctively paused his suturing operation, and with a conflicted tone, asked in shock: ”You’re looking for trouble again?”

Halfway through, Tong Yuan’an rapidly analyzed the situation internally.

Lu Cheng had demonstrated artery suturing during Teacher’s Day, and the artery diameter in half-limb replantation is significantly larger than that in finger replantation.

If Lu Cheng truly gained something during his recent neural suturing advanced workshop at Union Hospital, it’s possible that even if there’s neural damage in the half-limb replantation, Lu Cheng might still manage.

Lu Cheng wouldn’t immediately show off after his learning by bragging, but would self-reflect on the impact his introversion might have on Lu Cheng’s psyche.

”Can you handle it?” Tong Yuan’an’s tone shifted.

Lu Cheng replied with a standard tone: ”I’m definitely not as experienced as you, Teacher Tong, but if the demands aren’t too high and to save time, I can manage.”

”I should be able to salvage some function, and keep it alive.”

The orthopedic assistant, Vice Director Tayama, assisting Tong Yuan’an, mainly involved in sports medicine surgeries, was dumbfounded.

Of course, a surgical mask covered his facial expressions, revealing only his widened eyes.

Yet, no one took notice.

Tong Yuan’an nodded gently: ”Alright then... You go check if the tendon suturing in other surgical rooms is urgent.”

”If it’s not too urgent, you proceed to room 3 first.”

”There are five patients in total here, and rooms 1 and 4 aren’t related to tendons, while room 2 involves multiple tendon damages in the limbs.”

”Go take a look.” Tong Yuan’an emphasized the word ”look.”

Room 2 was operated by Peng Haibo. Due to Peng Kun’s previous conduct, now he’s suspicious about whether Peng Haibo is also trying to seize the opportunity for ”operating time” amidst the chaos!

”Alright!” Lu Cheng didn’t look back, directly stepping into the surgery room sensor door.

The surgery rooms are arranged in a single-column sequence, 135/246.

Room 5 isn’t far from room 2, just about a twenty-meter walk to the entrance.

Upon entering, familiar faces greeted Lu Cheng: Director Peng Haibo and Director Liu Xia from Ward 2 personally handling the surgery, with two brothers from Ward 2 assisting.

On seeing Lu Cheng enter, Director Liu Xia from Ward 2 busily greeted him: ”Xiao Lu, you’re here just in time! This patient’s upper and lower limb muscles and tendons have multiple injuries, please have a look...”

Peng Haibo had already stepped back onto the platform, standing stiffly without speaking.

Ward 2 in orthopedics was split from Ward 1, mainly handling similar business as Ward 1.

The only difference is, Ward 2 doesn’t handle emergencies, primarily stabilizing patient numbers through elective surgeries from outpatient referrals, with fewer patients compared to Ward 1.

Nonetheless, Peng Haibo occasionally directed cases like joint tuberculosis, osteomyelitis, infection and other simpler conditions to Ward 2.

In urgent situations, Lu Cheng, being merely an attending physician, technically shouldn’t serve as the technical supervisor guiding two deputy director physicians.

However, he was appointed by the vice president temporarily as the technical supervisor, allowing him to choose whether to direct the two directors here, or pretend he had never entered the surgical room.

Lu Cheng approached the surgery table, took a glance, and said: ”Director Liu, Director Peng, the tendon suturing here is still a while away.”

”You can leave the tendon suturing for later; I’ll come to handle it.”

”On the way to room 5, Professor Tong asked me to deal with the half-limb replantation in room 3.”

”It’s a more urgent situation there; I’ll come after handling it, and Professor Tong will head directly to the emergency surgery room.”

Lu Cheng stood, raising his head to look at Liu Xia and Peng Haibo, seeking their opinion.

The information in Lu Cheng’s words was somewhat dense, causing Peng Haibo and Liu Xia to both hesitate. Half-limb replantation is a specialized surgical technique not conducted by anyone in Long County.

Peng Haibo was more focused on where Professor Tong headed, promptly nodding hearing that Tong Yuan’an would head to the emergency zone after stepping down:

”No problem, Xiao Lu, you go; we’ll keep this procedure for you.”

Liu Xia coughed, throat morphing as he spoke: ”Xiao Lu, what did you just say? Professor Tong asked you to handle the half-limb replantation?”

Lu Cheng didn’t respond to Liu Xia, instead circled the surgery table, ensuring the vascular injuries were managed, without any active bleeding, though the wounds were numerous and appeared threatening.

”Director Liu, Teacher Tong merely asked me to take a look. Whether or not it’s achievable depends on the specific circumstances later.” Lu Cheng turned, once again stepping out.
