System Came When the Doctor was Thirty

Lu Cheng arrived at the emergency surgical clinic just as two police officers brought someone in.

One of the officers rudely shoved a Yellow Hair, yelling, ”Still trying to run, huh? Don’t care about your life anymore?”

No one was in a good mood today. Even though everyone involved in the brawl had been caught, the police system in Long County was bound to record this as a failure.

It’s already 23 years into modern policing, and yet there’s still a gang fight in the district that injured so many people, showing a clear lack in security and failure to preemptively warn of such incidents.

As they arrived, two of the cases were quite serious and had already been moved into the emergency room.

When the two were wheeled into the emergency room, they were still shouting, ”What the hell are you looking at? Never almost died before?”

”So what if I looked? You scrawny chicken, if it were just you against the two of us, you’d be lucky to live till tomorrow,” a fat man spat angrily, looking like he feared nothing on earth.

”Calm down, all of you!” The police officers with them quickly stepped in, pushing them gently as they both were quite injured.

They were barely alive, yet still bickering.

Zeng Huanqi tried explaining to the other officers, ”Our emergency shift usually only has two doctors, but as soon as I got your call, I contacted the department director right away. Others will be here shortly...”

”We hope you can maintain order, please ensure that no more scuffles or accidental injuries occur,” Zeng Huanqi, having been in the emergency department longer than Lu Cheng, said with much experience.

At this point, they not only needed to prevent more fights but also had to watch out for the possibility of attacks on the medical staff with tempers running high.

An older officer said, ”Later, two people are quite seriously injured, and one person’s arm is almost useless after being hacked, only simply bandaged... other places couldn’t handle it...”

”And it’s not just these few who are injured, others have been sent to the Traditional Chinese Medicine Hospital, the best is... let’s hope no one dies.”

Zeng Huanqi glanced at the officer, saying, ”We will certainly give our utmost efforts to save them, but before that, we need to conduct a simple triage.”

Lin Qianlong, who also lived in Gaojia Slope District mainly because of the proximity to the hospital where he serves as the emergency department director, had bought a new house there.

Upon receiving the call, Lin Qianlong cursed while twisting the throttle of his electric scooter to its maximum.

From the time of the call to his arrival at the entrance of the emergency department, it took less than ten minutes.

He quickly rushed inside and charged straight into the emergency room, ”What’s the situation?”

”Director Lin, this patient’s ulnar artery is injured. The doctor from the ambulance used a cord to stem blood temporarily. Xiao Lu and I are checking the wound.”

”The other has a stab wound to the abdominal wall, but the wound is on the lower left abdomen, so it shouldn’t be an acute hemorrhagic injury, we should first consider dealing with this...”

Upon hearing it was a stab wound, Lin Qianlong turned pale, ”You youngsters, how is it you still go to stabs?”

By this time, either the two in the emergency room had lost their energy or interest, they weren’t replying, just staring blankly at the ceiling with expressionless faces.

Perhaps they regretted it, or maybe the blood loss had made them apathetic.

Lu Cheng, wearing sterile gloves, used hemostatic forceps and tweezers to find and clamp the ulnar artery and vein after flipping into the deeper layers.

After a few ”clicks,” Lu Cheng said, ”Brother Zeng, this patient might not have time for extensive pre-operative preparation, we need to get him into surgery right away.”

”There are also many small blood vessels still seeping here that can’t be dealt with right now.”

”Has the on-duty head arrived yet?” Lu Cheng asked.

”The on-duty head is here, and the deputy director will soon arrive too!” someone outside replied, for an incident like this with brawls and injuries coming to the County Hospital, at least one deputy director must personally oversee the emergency response, this isn’t a minor event at all.

Patients and medical staff both rushed in one after another, soon there were six injured brought in total.

After subtly surveying the many patients, Lin Qianlong turned and said, ”Peng Ping, call Professor Chen Song, the conditions of these patients are concerning.”

”Six people, adding up cuts inside and out, top and bottom, there are nineteen wounds in total...”

At that moment, Peng Ping couldn’t care less that Professor Chen Song was a distinguished guest from the countryside, in an emergency everything takes precedence.

Peng Ping immediately made the call herself, ”Yao Lina, quickly have the nursing and logistics departments dispatch staff and monitors over here...”

As Peng Ping spoke, the orthopedics department folks arrived too.

Not only the on-duty orthopedic doctor, Xiang Kuihua, but also the two orthopedic ward directors, Peng Haibo and Liu Xia.

Of course, Peng Kun also came along with Peng Haibo to the emergency department, and upon seeing the scene, they immediately took charge of initial evaluations in the operation room...

”Peng Kun, quickly register the information and start issuing medical orders.”

”Xiang Kuihua, continue examining and assessing the injuries!”

”Peng Kun, call the department staff to head to the operating room directly.”

”Duty manager, call the surgery room to prepare the shift?” Peng Haibo shouted towards where the duty manager was.

This many patients would require the duty manager to mobilize resources, readying both the general and emergency operating rooms, preferably simultaneously.”

”The first thing prepared, and we’re contacting the blood bank, getting blood transferred from surrounding hospitals.” The middle-aged duty manager was in a hectic rush.

”The general surgery folks have arrived, everyone continues triaging!”

”What’s going on? Damn...”

”Gurney...”

”Stay still, don’t move!”

”Quick, draw blood, take an ECG, monitor heart rate, administer oxygen.”

”Director Lin, this person’s vital signs aren’t good.”

”The critical care team is also here.”

”Abdominal hematoma, someone here...”

The sound of various gurney wheels intersected, echoing off the walls.

The place was crowded and noisy, as more people joined, the cacophony of sounds was overwhelming...

When Lu Cheng finished quickly stemming the blood of the patient with ulnar artery and vein damage and stepped out, almost twenty people in white coats were busily moving about in the emergency department.

Lu Cheng immediately saw Lin Qianlong, went up to him, and asked, ”Director Lin, should I head to the operating room now, or stay here for backup?”

Upon hearing Lu Cheng’s voice, Lin Qianlong quickly replied, ”Go to the operating room right away... Professor Chen said he’s heading straight there...”

”We’ve got enough people here, soon the operating room will be the real tough battle...” Lin Qianlong barked impatiently.

”Zeng Huanqi, Zeng Huanqi,” Lin Qianlong began calling again.

”Director Lin, I’m in the emergency room, this patient has intra-abdominal bleeding that must be immediately staunched on-site, I’m working with Director Du from General Surgery...”

”This patient went into shock, give an adrenaline push...” Internal medicine group director and critical care ward director Huang Haibo shouted immediately.

Lu Cheng found it hard to locate a suitable place for himself, so he had to follow Director Lin Qianlong’s instructions and plan to head to the operating room to standby.

Emergency response is all about following directions, it’s a group effort, not something one person can easily control.

Unless possessing the profound skills of someone like Professor Chen Song, one couldn’t easily take on special tasks.

To harm a person, one is enough, but to save someone, three or five may not suffice.

Lu Cheng glanced at the patient with the abdominal wound, recalling the scene of Professor Chen Song rescuing by opening up in the emergency room himself but Lu Cheng could only dare to think of it.

Lacking the capability, he could only step back.

The operating room was his realm, his skills were not enough elsewhere.
